Weather: Cold front to bring subzero temperatures and possible snow

South Africans are being advised to prepare for a powerful cold front expected to bring icy temperatures, strong winds, and heavy rainfall to various parts of the country on Wednesday.
The South African Weather Service has issued a Level 4 warning for damaging winds, particularly along coastal regions. Snowfall is also anticipated in some high-lying areas, especially in the Free State and KwaZulu-Natal.
In Gauteng, no rainfall is expected as the cold front arrives; however, residents should expect strong winds and chilly mornings.
Cold front settles, residents urged to take precautionary measures to stay warm
The forecast for Johannesburg predicts a minimum temperature of 2°C and a high of 13°C on Wednesday. In Pretoria, the minimum is expected to be 4°C, with a high of 15°C.
Joburg Emergency Services spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi has urged Johannesburg residents to take precautionary measures to stay warm during the cold front.
'Residents of the City of Johannesburg are urged to prepare for a weather shift as the South African Weather Services has issued a warning for extremely cold temperatures in most parts of the City of Johannesburg from this coming Wednesday towards the week,' he said as per The Citizen.
'This drop in temperatures means that residents throughout the City of Johannesburg will be forced to use all sorts of heating devices to try and warm themselves in the process, making themselves vulnerable to fire incidents at home if heating devices are used unsafely/unattended,' Mulaudzi said.
The cold front is expected to persist until the weekend.

Cold and wet weather expected in these provinces

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has warned that cold conditions gripping parts of the country will worsen midweek, as a powerful cold front moves into the Western and Northern Cape provinces. The system is expected to bring freezing temperatures, heavy rainfall, strong winds, and snow on higher ground. 'Very cold, wet and windy conditions with heavy rainfall, strong interior winds and gale force coastal winds, very rough to high seas and light snowfall on the high ground can be expected,' said SAWS. The service urged small stock farmers and residents to take precautions. With several days of adverse weather ahead, Western Cape MEC for Local Government, Environmental Affairs, and Development Planning, Anton Bredell, confirmed that the province is prepared. Bredell explained that the Provincial Disaster Management Centre is coordinating with local municipalities to ensure communities are protected. 'Each local municipality in the province knows what is expected during the coming winter months to keep people safe,' he said. Following the recent drowning of a young woman at a low-level bridge in Slanghoek, Bredell stressed the need for public weather awareness and personal responsibility during floods. Residents are encouraged to develop household emergency plans and prepare 'grab-and-go' kits containing essentials such as IDs, medications, chargers, and a first aid kit. 'Assess where you live, as your home may flood if you are near a river or if there is poor drainage,' the disaster centre advised. Bredell also appealed to the public not to dump litter into stormwater drains, warning this could worsen flooding. The public has also been urged to follow instructions from emergency personnel and evacuate when ordered. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1. Borussia Dortmund coach blames hot weather for poor performance against Mamelodi Sundowns

TOUGH CONDITIONS Sundowns' South African forward Lebo Mothiba (C) reacts after scoring his team's third goal during the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 Group F football match between South Africa's Mamelodi Sundowns and Germany's Borussia Dortmund at the TQL stadium in Cincinnati on June 21, 2025. Picture: Federico Parra/AFP Borussia Dortmund substitutes cowered from the sun in the team's Club World Cup win over Mamelodi Sundowns on Saturday, in conditions coach Niko Kovac described as like "a sauna". The German side won 4-3 in Cincinnati at the TQL Stadium under a blazing sun, with the team's reserves watching the first half from the dressing room and the second under umbrellas on the bench. "I'm sweating like I've just come out of a sauna," said Kovac, who had already complained about the expected conditions on Friday before the Group F clash with the South Africans. "It was tough going for both teams, but the opposition are used to it. We certainly didn't give our best performance, but that wasn't possible today.'
