Weather alert: Rough seas, strong coastal winds and high fire danger conditions
Find out what the latest weather forecast from the SA Weather Service means for your region on 21 June 2025. The South African Weather Service (Saws) has released its latest weather forecast for Saturday, 21 June 2025. Saws warns of damaging waves along parts of the Western Cape, Eastern Cape, and KwaZulu-Natal coastline. Damaging winds are also expected in parts of the Eastern Cape, while areas in the Northern Cape face high fire danger conditions. Here's what you need to know. Weather warnings, Saturday, 21 June Impact-based warnings The weather service has issued a yellow level 2 warning for damaging waves between Saldanha Bay in the Western Cape and East London in the Eastern Cape, and along the coast of KwaZulu-Natal. Expect difficulty in navigation, small vessels possibly taking on water and capsizing within a locality, as well as localised disruption to ports/harbours. A yellow level 2 warning has also been issued for damaging winds resulting in difficulty in navigation between Cannon Rocks and East London in the Eastern Cape. Fire danger warnings Extremely high fire danger conditions are expected over the Richtersveld Municipality in the Northern Cape. The region's expected UVB sunburn index is 'high'. Residents should take the necessary precautions against prolonged sun exposure. Mpumalanga: Expect fine and cool weather, becoming partly cloudy over the Lowveld and escarpment. Limpopo: The day will be fine and cool to to warm, becoming partly cloudy in the east from the afternoon. North West: Fine and cool to cold weather awaits North West residents on Saturday. Free State: Residents can expect fine and cool to cold weather conditions. Northern Cape: The day will start with morning fog patches along the coast, otherwise it will be fine and cool to cold, but partly cloudy in places in the south-west. Western Cape: Western Cape residents can expect partly cloudy and cool conditions with isolated showers and rain along the south coast and adjacent interior, but fine in the north-east. Eastern Cape (western half): The day will be fine and cool, but partly cloudy with isolated showers and rain along the coast. Eastern Cape (eastern half): Expect fine and cool but partly cloudy conditions along the south coast. KwaZulu-Natal: Residents of KwaZulu-Natal can expect fine and cool to warm but cold weather in the south-west. The region's expected UVB sunburn index is 'very high'. Residents should take the necessary precautions against prolonged sun exposure.

Severe weather alert: Cold temperatures and rain expected this weekend
Rough seas, damaging winds, and a drop in temperatures dominate South Africa's weekend forecast, with the Eastern Cape under a Yellow Level 2 warning. South Africans can expect a chilly and blustery weekend as a deep low-pressure system sweeps across the country, bringing cold temperatures, damaging winds, and rain to parts of the coast, along with a Yellow Level 2 warning for the Eastern Cape. According to the South African Weather Service (SAWS), Saturday will see widespread cold to cool conditions across most provinces, with fine to partly cloudy skies in the interior. Isolated 30% rainfall is expected along the southern coast, particularly around George and Plettenberg Bay, while winds will strengthen over the Eastern Cape coastline, reaching speeds between 80–100km/h offshore. 'A deep low-pressure system passing south of the country will result in strong to gale force winds and rough seas, with wave heights reaching up to 8 metres,' said SAWS forecasters. 'This poses a significant risk to small vessels, temporary structures, and high-sided vehicles along exposed routes.'

Western Cape prepares for winter as storms approach
The Western Cape government has activated its disaster readiness plans as winter cold and wet conditions are forecast to persist into next week. Anton Bredell, the MEC for Local Government, Environmental Affairs and Development Planning, said provincial services are on high alert. 'Our disaster and emergency services are ready to respond swiftly,' Bredell confirmed. 'The Provincial Disaster Management Centre coordinates and supports the district disaster centres, and each local municipality in the province knows what is expected during the coming winter months to keep people safe.' The province's preparation comes amid weather warnings of increased flood risks in vulnerable areas. Following a tragic drowning at a low-level bridge in Slanghoek, officials have reiterated safety precautions. Bredell urged residents to stay informed and prepare for winter emergencies. 'We appeal to the public not to litter or dump in stormwater drains, as this will stop the water from draining away and cause even more flooding,' he said. The Provincial Disaster Management Centre also advised households to prepare emergency kits. A 'grab-and-go' kit should include identification documents, essential medicines, phone chargers, cash, and a first aid kit. 'Assess where you live, as your home may flood if you are near a river or if there is poor drainage,' the centre said. Authorities have emphasised the importance of heeding weather warnings from credible sources such as the South African Weather Service or local municipalities. Residents should evacuate early in flood-prone or low-lying areas and avoid driving or walking through floodwaters. 'Just 15 cm of fast-moving water can knock you down, and a depth of two feet can float a car,' the department warned. Contact with floodwater should also be avoided due to contamination of sewage, fuel, or chemicals. Bredell stressed the role of public cooperation: 'These men and women are trained to keep us safe, and they risk their own lives to do this. Cold front: Freezing temperatures expected in these provinces
A cold front is expected to make a landfall by Wednesday morning, 18 June, resulting in very cold temperatures in parts of the Western and Northern Cape. This is according to an advisory issued by the South African Weather Service (SAWS) on Monday, 16 June. The advisory comes just days after another cold front resulted in adverse weather conditions that wreaked havoc in the Eastern Cape, killing 88 people. The weather service had forecast heavy rainfall leading to localised flooding and infrastructure damage in parts of the Eastern Cape, as well as disruptive snow which affected traffic flow over mountain passes and led to some road closures. The weather service said a cold front is expected to slip south of the country by Wednesday morning, introducing cold to very cold daytime temperatures of 10 degrees Celsius and below in places over the interior of the Western Cape and the Namakwa district in the Northern Cape. 'As another cold front moves south of the country by Thursday evening, the very cold daytime temperatures are expected to persist through Saturday,' SAWS said. Meanwhile, the weather service has issued a yellow level 2 warning for damaging waves in the above-mentioned provinces. 'Westerly to south-westerly swells with wave heights reach 4 – 5m but 5.5m on Wednesday are expected along the coast between Saldanha Bay to Plettenberg Bay from Tuesday evening until Thursday evening,' SAWS said. In addition, a yellow level 1 warning for damaging winds has also been issued. SAWS said the expected cold front will result in north-westerly to westerly damaging winds of 35 to 55km/h gusting 60 to 75km/h between Cape Point to Plettenberg Bay on Tuesday evening into Wednesday afternoon.
