Business park to be built at Lincolnshire Lakes
Plans for a major commercial development near Scunthorpe have been announced.
Property and regeneration specialist Hargreaves Land has unveiled plans for Forge Point, a 77-acre employment park near to junction 3 of the M180.
The site is part of a mixed-use area set out in the Lincolnshire Lakes Area Action Plan.
The plan supports the development of a high-tech business park, offices and hotel.
The Lincolnshire Lakes scheme is expected to create 6,000 new homes, 550 of which are proposed on land the opposite side of the M181 roundabout where the employment park would be accessed from.
According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, Hargreaves Land said Forge Point would offer a range of options for commercial businesses, including freehold and leasehold design, and build opportunities.
The site has capacity for up 959,300sq ft (89121.8sp m) of new development.
Hargreaves Land development surveyor Brady Harrison said: "As part of the wider Lincolnshire Lakes development, which is one of the largest residential development opportunities in the UK, businesses based at Forge Point will benefit from access to a new community of over 6,000 homes, alongside a range of retail and leisure offerings."

University of Reading looking for residents to join steering group
The University of Reading is looking for two local residents to join its community engagement steering group. The group, launched two years ago, is chaired by Vice-Chancellor Professor Robert Van de Noort. It meets three times a year to provide strategic oversight of the university's community engagement activities. Professor Van de Noort said: "A key part of our university strategy is to be engaged with our local community. "This means working in partnership with local residents to understand how we as a university can best serve our community." The outgoing members, Andrea Malcolm and Hiral Patel, have helped to make the university campuses more accessible to all community groups during their two-year membership. They have also been instrumental in launching the community champions network. Andrea said: "I wanted to make a positive difference where I live. "Being part of the steering group allowed me to support community-focused events and projects that promote partnership, awareness, and local opportunities." Hiral added: "I joined the steering group to strengthen the partnership between local communities and the university, motivated by my deep connection to both." The university is inviting expressions of interest for the role by Friday, June 27. No previous experience of being part of a steering group or working with the university is required, but strong local connections, a good understanding of the area, and a passion for community engagement are essential. The appointments will last for the 2025/26 academic year, with the possibility of extension, and travel expenses will be paid.

Gallery owner struggles to let go as he announces shop closure
THE OWNER of a city centre gallery has announced he will be closing his shop after 25 years. Terry Goodwin-Jones, 70, will be closing The King's Gallery on New Street later this year, with Mangojuice Gallery, which shares the same building, also set to close. Mr Goodwin-Jones has taken the decision to close the gallery as he is looking to retire. The gallery has already cut down to just three opening days a week. He said there has been an emotional reaction from customers, with some regulars even shedding a tear. "We've had customers come in and tell us they've cried when they found out. "People will often drop in for a chat or come in with a packet of biscuits for us. We've got lots of regular customers who have become more than customers." The gallery owner admitted he has also struggled with the idea of closing and is yet to confirm a date for closure. "If we had a lease, we'd have a deadline but I have no deadline so it's dragging on a bit," he said. "I've become more accepting of it. I was really struggling with the idea of closing the shop. "I'm not desperate to pack up the shop but I don't want to leave it too late that I'm too old to do anything afterwards." With Mangojuice Gallery also closing, Mr Goodwin-Jones reminisced about the 12 years he has spent working in the same building alongside owner Popi Pribojac. "It's been absolutely brilliant because the two shops complement each other so well. We get on really well and have a good laugh," he said. He said there have also been plenty of memories with other businesses on New Street over the years. "There used to be a shop over the road called Kaos and we've actually had a badminton net across the road and played badminton in the street," he said. "We've had a lot of laughs." A closing date hasn't been set but is expected to be around August.

'We're not getting enough people through the door': Village pub closes
A village pub has closed less than a year after being taken under new management. Ben's at The Legion in Blackrod posted on social media that it had closed with "immediate effect" this week. The former Heroes of Blackrod, on Manchester Road, was taken over by husband and wife Ben and Nikki Haydock in October 2024. The post states: "It's with great regret that we have to announce that Bens at The Legion has closed permanently with immediate effect. (Image: Ben Haydock) "We would like to say a huge thank you to all our staff for their hard work and dedication and also express my gratitude to all of our customers for your support during our brief stay. "If you got a taste for our ale you're more than welcome to visit us at Ben's Tap & Bottle Shop where we also have a great selection of craft cans and even more on our website (Image: Ben's Brewery) "To be frank it doesn't feel great to be yet another of the growing numbers of pubs closing but we'll dust ourselves down and crack on. "Thank you for some good memories Blackrod and all the best for the future." The building was formerly the Blackrod Royal British Legion Club before closing its doors in August 2012. The family's microbrewery, Ben's Tap and Bottle Shop, remains open in Chorley town centre. The Bolton News attempted to contact the pub's management, but they had no further comment to make. In 2024, close to 300 pubs closed down across England and Wales — a rate of around six per week — according to the latest figures from the British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA). The association, which represents more than 20,000 establishments, revealed that 289 pubs shut over the past year, leading to the loss of over 4,500 jobs.
