Penang's LRT Mutiara Line to begin construction in Aug — 21 stations across island & mainland

Penang's public transport scene is currently dominated by Rapid Penang buses, which cover a wide network across both the island and the mainland. You'll also find convenient alternatives like Grab for e-hailing, trishaws for short trips, and a free city bus called CAT that loops around George Town.
But change is on the horizon. Come Aug 2025, Penang will begin building its first-ever metro system — the LRT Mutiara Line. Previously referred to as the Bayan Lepas LRT Project, this upgraded version gets its name from Penang's nickname, 'Pearl of the Orient,' and is all about easing traffic while better connecting the island and beyond.
Spanning 29.5km with 21 planned stations, the LRT Mutiara Line will link key destinations across the island and mainland.
It'll run between the new Penang South Reclamation Island A (also called Silicon Island) and major spots like KOMTAR and Penang Sentral. Trains will alternate routes, making it easier to get around without adding to road congestion.
This LRT will feature Park & Ride options, transit-oriented development (TOD) zones, and smooth last-mile connections to support Penang's growth in a greener, more structured way. It'll even connect to important points like the Penang International Airport and Sungai Nibong Bus Terminal.
Two main depots will support operations once construction of LRT Mutiara Line kicks off. With a maximum capacity of 10.9K passengers per hour in each direction, each train will carry at least 405 people — and select stations will include more than 1K parking spots for both cars and motorcycles.
Expect about a 45-minute ride from Silicon Island to KOMTAR, and 49 minutes to Penang Sentral — a small price for skipping traffic and enjoying a more connected, sustainable Penang.
While progress might appear slow in the early stages, it's worth noting that the project is scheduled for completion only by 31 Dec 2031 to give it a long but carefully planned timeline while ensuring everything runs smoothly.

Malaysian court drops money laundering charges against jailed ex-leader Najib Razak

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — A Malaysian court dropped three money laundering charges against jailed former Prime Minister Najib Razak on Friday, in a case linked to the multibillion-dollar looting of a state fund. Najib was previously convicted in a graft case tied to the 1Malaysia Development Berhad state fund, or 1MBD, and began serving time in 2022, after losing his final appeal. He also faces other graft trials. The High Court's decision to drop the charges alleging Najib received 27 million ringgit ($6.3 million) in illegal proceeds to his bank accounts came after procedural delays by the prosecution, which saw the case dragging on for six years, Najib's lawyer Muhammad Shafee Abdullah said. Prosecutors could not give the court a timeline for when they will be ready for the trial, he added. Prosecutors reserve the right to revive charges against Najib and a discharge does not mean an acquittal, Shafee said. But, Najib was happy and can now focus on the main 1MDB trial, he added. Najib set up 1MDB shortly after taking power in 2009. Investigators allege that more than $4.5 billion was stolen from the fund and laundered by his associates to finance Hollywood films and extravagant purchases. The scandal upended Najib's government and he was defeated in the 2018 election. Last November, the High Court also discharged Najib and the former treasury chief in another 1MDB-linked corruption case after repeated delays by the prosecution. The pair can still be charged for the same offence in the future. In 2023, Najib was acquitted on separate charges of tampering with a government audit into 1MDB. Najib was sentenced to 12 years in jail in his first graft trial but the sentence was halved by the Pardon Boards in 2024. Najib alleged the board had issued a home arrest order for him to complete his sentence at home, but the case is still being heard in court. Najib awaits his verdict in another key case that ties him directly to the 1MDB scandal, which has prompted investigations in the U.S. and several other countries. The defense in May closed their case on four charges of abuse of power to obtain over $700 million from 1MDB that went into Najib's bank accounts, and 21 counts of money laundering involving the same amount. Closing arguments are scheduled in October, after which the court will set a date for verdict. Energy Commission: Up to 19pc reduction as Putrajaya unveils progressive electricity tariff, new rebates for low-use households

More than 23.6 million domestic users in peninsular Malaysia will benefit from lower and fairer electricity tariffs under a revised structure starting 1 July 2025. The average base tariff has been reduced to 45.40 sen/kWh, with incentives for energy-efficient users and extended off-peak hours introduced to promote lower consumption. Special rebates and social support will continue, while a more transparent bill format and a new fuel adjustment mechanism will reflect actual monthly costs. PUTRAJAYA, June 20 — More than 23.6 million domestic electricity users in peninsular Malaysia are set to benefit from fairer and more progressive rates under a newly approved tariff structure that will come into effect from July 1. The new electricity tariff, which will run until December 31, 2027, falls under the Fourth Regulatory Period (RP4) of the Incentive-Based Regulation framework governed by the Electricity Supply Act 1990. 'The tariff revision involves a restructuring of the average base tariff rate, a new tariff schedule, and a revamped fuel cost adjustment mechanism,' the Energy Commission said in a statement today. The average base tariff has been revised to 45.40 sen/kWh, slightly lower than the 45.62 sen/kWh approved in December 2024, resulting in an overall average tariff reduction of up to 19 per cent compared to the previous regulatory period. Under the new tariff schedule, users will now be categorised based on voltage levels — domestic and non-domestic — while charges will reflect actual costs across energy, capacity, network, and retail components. The Energy Efficiency Incentive will benefit domestic users who consume 1,000 kWh or less, while non-domestic users using under 200 kWh will also be eligible for incentives. The Time of Use scheme has been updated to include extended off-peak hours from 10pm to 2pm on weekdays and all day on weekends, to encourage consumption during low-demand periods. The government will continue to offer social support, including special tariffs for agriculture, water services, and rail operators, a 10 per cent rebate for schools, places of worship and welfare homes, and a monthly RM40 rebate for hardcore poor households registered under e-Kasih. Electricity bills will adopt a more detailed itemised format to improve transparency, with energy-conscious users likely to see further savings. The new Automatic Fuel Adjustment mechanism will replace the current Imbalance Cost Pass-Through system, with adjustments made based on monthly fuel prices and exchange rates. Consumers can check their new rates from June 21 and use a bill calculator available from June 23 on the official TNB website.
