Penang's LRT Mutiara Line to begin construction in Aug — 21 stations across island & mainland
Penang's public transport scene is currently dominated by Rapid Penang buses, which cover a wide network across both the island and the mainland. You'll also find convenient alternatives like Grab for e-hailing, trishaws for short trips, and a free city bus called CAT that loops around George Town. But change is on the horizon. Come Aug 2025, Penang will begin building its first-ever metro system — the LRT Mutiara Line. Previously referred to as the Bayan Lepas LRT Project, this upgraded version gets its name from Penang's nickname, 'Pearl of the Orient,' and is all about easing traffic while better connecting the island and beyond. Spanning 29.5km with 21 planned stations, the LRT Mutiara Line will link key destinations across the island and mainland. It'll run between the new Penang South Reclamation Island A (also called Silicon Island) and major spots like KOMTAR and Penang Sentral. Trains will alternate routes, making it easier to get around without adding to road congestion. This LRT will feature Park & Ride options, transit-oriented development (TOD) zones, and smooth last-mile connections to support Penang's growth in a greener, more structured way. It'll even connect to important points like the Penang International Airport and Sungai Nibong Bus Terminal. Two main depots will support operations once construction of LRT Mutiara Line kicks off. With a maximum capacity of 10.9K passengers per hour in each direction, each train will carry at least 405 people — and select stations will include more than 1K parking spots for both cars and motorcycles. Expect about a 45-minute ride from Silicon Island to KOMTAR, and 49 minutes to Penang Sentral — a small price for skipping traffic and enjoying a more connected, sustainable Penang. While progress might appear slow in the early stages, it's worth noting that the project is scheduled for completion only by 31 Dec 2031 to give it a long but carefully planned timeline while ensuring everything runs smoothly. India's largest underground LPG storage cavern unveiled
Mangaluru: A landmark achievement in India's energy infrastructure was realised with the completion of the nation's largest underground liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) storage cavern in Mangaluru. Capable of holding 80,000 metric tonnes of LPG, this state-of-the-art facility bolsters the country's capacity to meet critical energy demands, particularly during emergencies. The cavern, developed by Megha Engineering under the central government's oversight, underwent a rigorous Cavern Acceptance Test (CAT) from May 9 to June 6 to verify its safety and operational integrity. This marks the third underground storage facility in the Mangaluru region, joining the existing crude oil caverns at Permude (1.5 lakh metric tonnes) and Padur (2.5 lakh metric tonnes). Unlike its predecessors, this cavern is dedicated exclusively to LPG, surpassing the 60,000-tonne capacity of a similar facility in Visakhapatnam to claim the title of India's largest. Approved by the central government in 2018, construction began in 2019 and culminated at a cost of Rs. 800 crore. The facility, carved 500 meters beneath the earth's surface through solid rock, is supported by a newly completed pipeline system connected to a floating jetty in the sea, enabling efficient LPG transfer. This development strengthens India's energy security, ensuring a robust supply chain for LPG across the region. Authorities anticipate the facility will play a pivotal role in stabilising gas availability, reinforcing Mangaluru's growing significance as a hub for strategic energy reserves say the company officials.

Laurels Celebrates NIOS Success Stories
More students in Bahrain are proving that success doesn't have to come from a mainstream classroom. Laurels Centre for Global Education has announced that its latest batch of Grade 12 students under India's National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) have cleared their board exams, many with standout results. The milestone reflects a quiet shift in how academic achievement is viewed across the Kingdom. NIOS, originally created to support those who needed a second chance at education, is gaining traction among students who want a more flexible and personalised learning model. 'I congratulate the students and assure them of the high quality of our tutorials,' said P. Unnikrishnan, Chairman of Laurels Center for Global Education. Hard work and commitment 'Continuing the winning streak is not easy. It is the result of hard work and commitment. Our students and teachers are doing a commendable job,' said Adv. Abdul Jaleel Abdulla, Director of Laurels Centre for Global Education. 'NIOS is a great platform for any students to pass 10th and 12th grades in open stream and continue their pursuit in becoming a graduate. It is approved for qualifying for NEET, JEE, CAT and all other entrance examinations and college admissions in India, Canada, US and Europe.' New path forward ' These results speak volumes about what can happen when students are given space to learn at their own pace,' said the Centre Head at Laurels. 'NIOS is no longer just an alternative, it's becoming a preferred route for many.' Students like Aujoy Kumar, who scored 79%, and others including Meraj Ali at 78%, Fathima Hiba at 76%, and Noshan Naeem Ahmad at 75%, are setting a new benchmark for academic comeback stories. Each result is a reflection of resilience, support, and the value of stepping outside the onesize-fits-all schooling system. Beyond results The centre recently hosted a celebration for students, marking not just the end of a school year but the beginning of new academic and professional aspirations. Many graduates are now preparing for college applications and further training. With new enrolments open, Laurels Centre is doubling down on its mission to provide student-led, inclusive education through the NIOS programme. Panchayat Season 4: Chandan Roy teases a twist, says 'Small things are blown out of proportion'
With the release of Season 4 of the much-loved comedy-drama series ' Panchayat ' just days away, actor Chandan Roy, who plays Vikas Shukla, has offered fans a glimpse into what they can expect from the new season, which premieres on Prime Video on June 24. In a candid interview with ANI , actor Chandan Roy said the upcoming season is his personal favourite and offered a glimpse into the elements that will define the new storyline.' So, it's coming on the 24th. I think it will come till the night of the 23rd. So, just watch, and you'll know what's going to happen and what's not. But yes, I want to share one thing with all of you. Season 4… Personally, it's my favourite. More than Season 1, 2, and 3. I'm not saying this just because I want you to watch it. I'm genuinely saying it,' he said. The actor didn't hesitate to drop hints about what sets the upcoming season apart.' There's a twist. I mean, the nature of Panchayat, its essence, is that this time we're playing around a lot more. We're blowing small things out of proportion, and this is something that happens a lot, especially in North India. Under the peepal tree, near the betel leaf shop, by the tea stall. We're bringing all these elements much more into season 4. So, I hope you will really enjoy it,' he added. For fans of the show, this could mean a return to the quintessential charm of rural India, where the everyday drama unfolds under the shade of trees, at tea stalls, or during community gossip. Season 3 of 'Panchayat' concluded on a tense cliffhanger, and the stakes were raised considerably. The series had built up to a shocking confrontation between the villagers of Phulera and the goons of MLA Chandrakishore. The escalating tension between the two sides culminated in a violent face-off, leaving viewers eagerly awaiting cliffhanger featured an attack on the local leadership, with Pradhanji sustaining a gunshot wound to the shoulder, while Abhishek's preparations for the CAT examination were disrupted by the ensuing violence. The key questions that remained unanswered at the end of Season 3 included: 'Who shot Pradhanji? 'Was it the MLA or someone else? 'Will Abhishek clear his CAT exam and be admitted to IIM?' What will be the outcome of the Panchayat elections? 'Will peace return to Phulera, or will the violence escalate further?' These questions continue to dominate the minds of fans as they await the release of Season 4. Season 4 promises to pick up right from where season 3 left off, delving into the aftermath of the political violence and the unresolved questions surrounding the Panchayat elections. If the teaser trailer is anything to go by, Phulera appears to have turned into a political battleground, with campaign slogans, fiery rallies, and underhanded tactics. The contest for the Pradhan's seat intensifies between Manju Devi and Kranti Devi. The upcoming season will see the return of Jitendra Kumar as Sachiv Ji, alongside Neena Gupta, Raghubir Yadav, Faisal Malik, Chandan Roy, Sanvikaa, Durgesh Kumar, Sunita Rajwar, and Pankaj Jha–each contributing to the growing political tension in Phulera. Created by Deepak Kumar Mishra and Chandan Kumar, and directed by Mishra along with Akshat Vijaywargiya, the new season promises to bring back the show's signature blend of satire, warmth, and rustic charm.

Millions who were set to get up to £70 in compensation from Mastercard could now be waiting months for payment
MILLIONS of Brits who are eligible for compensation from Mastercard could be forced to wait months for the payment. The credit card company has agreed to a £200million settlement which could mean you are owed money for purchases made years ago. Advertisement 1 Millions of people could be forced to wait months for compensation from Mastercard Credit: AP:Associated Press Around 47million customers could receive compensation of up to £70 each after a landmark legal victory in May. But it could be months until the money is paid out. This is because Innsworth is now trying to challenge how the funds will be shared, according to MoneySavingExpert. Innsworth is a business that helps to fund legal claims, in exchange for a share of the winnings. Advertisement Read more on money But in this instance, Innsworth said the Tribunal that approved the settlement "made a series of errors in its judgement" when deciding how much of the money it should be given. The company has now filed a legal claim called a judicial review to try and get a larger amount. As a result of the new case, the launch of the online claims portal will be delayed, so payouts will also be pushed back. Meanwhile, if Innsworth wins its case and gets more of the £200million, it could reduce the amount of money customers get. Advertisement Most read in Money When was the legal challenge launched? Walter Merricks, a former financial ombudsman, launched the legal claim in 2016. He alleged that 46million British shoppers were ripped off after fees were wrongly levied on transactions made over a 15-year period between 1992 and 2008. Retailers were charged fees by Mastercard to process card payments, and allegedly passed those costs on to customers through inflated prices. Although Mastercard provided the technology for card payments, the case argued its fees led to the overcharging of customers. Advertisement The settlement was approved in May and marked a big victory for consumer rights. But it fell short of the settlement of up to £17billion that Merricks originally wanted. MERRICKS VS MASTERCARD 2015 New rules under the UK's Consumer Rights Act 2015 mean collective claims can be made. 2016 Mr Merricks starts a lawsuit claiming that Mastercard overcharged shoppers. 2017 Mr Merricks' claim was dismissed by the Competition Appeal Tribunal (CAT), as was an application to appeal the decision. 2018 The Court of Appeal ruled that Mr Merricks be allowed to appeal the CAT decision. 2019 Mr Merricks' appeal was heard by the Court of Appeal and the decision was upheld. Mastercard was then given permission to appeal that decision by the Supreme Court. 2020 After hearing the appeal, the Supreme Court dismissed it and ruled the case could go ahead. 2021 After hearing the case, the CAT ruled in Mr Merricks' favour. 2022 Mastercard's final challenge was dismissed in the Court of Appeal. Late 2024 Mastercard and Merricks reach a proposed settlement. 2025 The Competition Appeal Tribunal is due to hear the settlement on February 19. Spring 2025 The Competition Appeal Tribunal gave its final approval to the £200million settlement in the long running class action against Mastercard. How much could I get? The amount of compensation you will get depends on how many people file a claim. It may now also depend on what share Innsworth walks away with. Advertisement Of the £200million settlement, £100million has been earmarked for consumer payouts. Experts at MoneySavingExpert predict that if just 5% of eligible individuals claim, the payouts could be up to £70. But if more people apply, the payout could fall to around £45. The remaining £100million has been set aside for legal costs and other expenses. Advertisement Am I eligible? You do not need to have ever used a Mastercard to qualify for the compensation. This is because the claim argues that all shoppers were affected by the inflated prices, regardless of how they paid. To qualify for the compensation, you need to match the following criteria: You lived in the UK (England, Wales or Northern Ireland) for at least three consecutive months between June 20, 1997, and June 21, 2008. For those who lived in Scotland, the period extends from May 22, 1992, to June 21, 2008. You were aged 16 or over during the relevant period. You purchased goods or services in the UK during this time for non-business purposes. You won't need to provide proof of purchase. You were still living in the UK on September 6, 2016 (when the claim was filed). How do I make a claim? An online claims portal is expected to launch in the coming months on the Mastercard Consumer Claim website, which is managed by legal services firm Epiq. Advertisement Those who think they have been affected will have several months to make their claim online. The process should be straightforward and will require you to confirm your eligibility and give basic personal information such as your date of birth, address and bank details. No supporting documentation will be required. If you are deemed eligible then Mastercard is expected to issue payments within 28 days. Advertisement Individuals will have until the end of 2025 to submit their claims. Do you have a money problem that needs sorting? Get in touch by emailing . Plus, you can join our
