5 standout Patriots players from third open OTAs practice
The New England Patriots kick-started their last week of OTAs with their final open practice for the media on Monday.
Four-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Stefon Diggs made his first appearance at an open practice for the Patriots, but he was a limited participant due to his continued rehab from the ACL injury he suffered last season.
With Kendrick Bourne out and Ja'Lynn Polk limited, that opened the door for other receivers to step into more prominent roles on offense. Speaking of the offense, this was the best practice by the unit through all three of the open OTA sessions.
It was a good way to wrap up for an offense that ranked among the worst in the league last season. They have dealt with numerous changes in the offseason, and things appear to be trending in the right direction.
Here are five standout players from the Patriots' third OTAs practice:
WR Efton Chism III
Undrafted rookie Efton Chism III is quickly becoming one of the most surprising storylines of the Patriots' offseason. The run of strong performances continued on Monday for the former Eastern Washington standout, who hauled in a perfect 7-of-7 passes thrown in his direction.
He was getting the top reps with Drake Maye on the field, along with Demario Douglas, Kayshon Boutte and Kyle Williams.
QB Drake Maye
This was a major bounce-back practice for Drake Maye and the Patriots' offense. The second-year quarterback looked sharp in competitive 11-on-11s, going 14-of-16 passing during the practice. It was a good sign to see the offense finally settle into things and get some wins against the defense.
Maye's confidence continues to grow every time he steps onto the field, and that should only continue as he becomes more comfortable with Josh McDaniels' offense.
S Josh Minkins
Undrafted rookie safety Josh Minkins gets a mention here for his interception on fellow rookie Ben Wooldridge. It was the only interception of the competitive period. Minkins will need more plays like that in training camp, given the ridiculous competition at safety this year. Kyle Dugger and Jabrill Peppers sit at the top of the depth chart with Marte Mapu, Jaylinn Hawkins, Dell Pettus and rookie Craig Woodson currently serving as the reserve options.
RB Rhamondre Stevenson
Don't forget about Rhamondre Stevenson.
It's crazy that it even needs to be said about the guy at the top of the running back depth chart. Stevenson probably had the best play of the practice after hauling in a dime of a throw from Drake Maye on a deep wheel route down the sideline. Even with the arrival of explosive rookie TreVeyon Henderson, Stevenson will still have a major role on the Patriots' offense.
WR Demario Douglas
Demario Douglas was the Patriots' leading wide receiver for the 2024 season. Even with the new receiver additions, Douglas continues to prove how valuable he is to the offense. He snagged all four of the balls thrown in his direction at Monday's practice.
It will be fun to see what Douglas is capable of in an offense where he isn't perceived as the top receiving threat. The arrival of Stefon Diggs and Kyle Williams could open up even more opportunities for him to make plays in the slot.

Bills Pleased With Potential James Cook Replacement ‘Perfectionist'

Bills Pleased With Potential James Cook Replacement 'Perfectionist' originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Buffalo Bills running back James Cook has become one of the league's bright stars. He led the league in rushing touchdowns last year and has posted back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons. Advertisement Despite the success, Cook is in a difficult situation with the Bills. The Georgia product is looking for a long-term extension, and Buffalo has been unable to agree on a new contract. Some analysts believe Cook could miss training camp next month if he doesn't get the deal he wants. While a contract holdout can be a significant issue for any organization, the Bills are in a rare position. They believe they have a starting caliber running back backing up their current Pro Bowler. Ray Davis, the former fourth-round pick from the 2024 draft, is coming off a successful first season in Buffalo. As he prepares for his second year with the team, Davis has received rave reviews from his coaching staff. Advertisement During offseason workouts, Bills offensive coordinator Joe Brady made it clear that the team would be perfectly fine with Davis as a lead back. "For a guy like Ray, who is as conscientious as it gets and wants to be a perfectionist, it's been really good for him to kind of take a step back and kind of be able to evaluate how he played last year," Brady said. "Watch the tape and learn the running back position at a different level." As good as Davis has looked during offseason workouts, Buffalo still needs Cook on the field if they want to be considered genuine title contenders. Buffalo should want to utilize Cook and Davis as a 1-2 punch early and often in 2025, but it's still a good sign that the team can rely on the Kentucky product to carry the workload when needed. Jets' Mason Taylor Earmarked For Pro Bowl Career Predicts Insider

Jets' Mason Taylor Earmarked For Pro Bowl Career Predicts Insider originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The New York Jets offense under Tanner Engstrand will be an interesting watch with Justin Fields, Garrett Wilson, and Breece Hall as the "big" trio. Advertisement But one knock on the offense since the beginning of Aaron Glenn's tenure has been the lack of weapons for Fields outside of Wilson. Enter tight end Mason Taylor, who was drafted in the second round and is expected to develop into one of Fields' trusted targets. Granted, that is providing he can show that he can be that during training camp, with Jeremy Ruckert and Stone Smartt seen as his competition. But for Fox Sports' Rob Rang, in naming a rookie who could be a franchise star for all 32 teams, in New York's case, it is Taylor, with a resemblance to two-time Pro Bowler Mickey Shuler. "Perhaps some of the reason why the Jets have struggled developing a young quarterback in recent years is their lack of a "security blanket" at tight end," Rang writes. "Taylor has some of the surest hands of any pass-catcher in this class, providing an immediate boost to a franchise that hasn't produced a Pro Bowler at TE since Mickey Shuler … in 1988." Mason Taylor And The JetsBy Tony Fisher Shuler played 12 years with the Jets and totaled 4,819 yards and 37 touchdowns, so that is the bar Taylor has to reach. Two Pro Bowl selections in 1986 and 1988, Shuler was quite the weapon. Advertisement Now, it is up to Taylor to try to emulate that. Of course, we don't want to put too much on his plate, but Mason has all the tools to develop into a security blanket for Fields, and based on the rest of New York's weapons outside of Wilson, Justin might need it. Is there a Pro Bowl in Taylor's career? It sure would be nice. Sam Darnold makes eye-opening admission about how things ended with Vikings

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold reflected on his ending with the Minnesota Vikings. Speaking in a recent interview with The Athletic, Darnold admitted the offseason exit was 'tough to swallow,' acknowledging expectations and his own shortcomings down the stretch. Despite an impressive, overachieving regular season, the Vikings greatly underwhelmed in the playoffs, losing 27-9 to the Los Angeles Rams in the wild-card round. 'For lack of a better term, we laid an egg as an offense,' Darnold said. 'And I think, for me personally, that sucks. I felt like we were a really good team, but at the end of the day — and this is gonna sound a little pessimistic — but when you get to the end of it and you don't win the whole thing, you failed. 'I feel like I could have played way better, to be completely honest with you. I feel I didn't play up to my standard. I truly feel that way. I feel like if I would have just played better, I would've been able to give the team a chance.' Sam Darnold was a Pro Bowler last year. Getty Images Darnold, who signed a one-year, $10 million 'prove-it' deal in March 2024 with Minnesota, became the starter for a team expected to be one of the worst in the NFC and likely to turn to rookie first-rounder JJ McCarthy, who missed the season with an injury, at some point. Darnold put together career-highs with 4,319 passing yards, 35 touchdowns, a 102.5 passer rating and his first Pro Bowl selection. The Vikings surged to an impressive 14–3 record, with Darnold proving to be a steadying presence during the regular season, but lost 31-9 to the Lions in the final week to miss out on the division title. Sam Darnold led the Vikings to a 14-3 regular season. Getty Images The breakout led to a three-year deal with Seattle worth north of $100 million. 'I think without a doubt, he's got his best football ahead of him,' former Rams receiver and current Seahawk teammate Cooper Kupp told The Athletic. 'I love his competitiveness. He's not OK with things being just OK.' Darnold added, 'I learned a lot last season, from those two games especially. At the end of the day, you go through those experiences, you learn, and you get better. I try every single day to get better. That's it.'
