Hamilton Accies getting Broadwood go-ahead will spark recruitment drive, says John Rankin

The Accies gaffer is hopeful of adding fresh faces now there is certainty over where they will play this coming season
Hamilton Accies boss John Rankin hopes that now their move to Broadwood has been rubber stamped by the SPFL, it will speed up his summer recruitment drive.
The Lanarkshire side have been in limbo over the last month or so with uncertainty hanging over their controversial switch from New Douglas Park in Hamilton to their new temporary home in Cumbernauld.

But last Thursday's decision by the SPFL to approve their lease with North Lanarkshire Council - which required Accies to pay a year of costs upfront - has provided some much-needed certainty about the club's future and Rankin says it will now pave the way for him to bring in new players.

He said: "We definitely have players to add. We've spent a lot of time on recruitment this summer, speaking to people.
"We know it is a bit different, playing in the league below. It is not ideal and it hasn't been ideal with the stadium.
"The first question on people's lips has been: 'Where are you going to play?'
"So I think the fact we are now able to train and play at Broadwood now, brings a sense of happiness and there is a buzz about it.
"The players I have been speaking to now know where we will play and train, it takes that uncertainty away and gives us the chance to go and get the right bodies in now. We want to make the squad stronger and be as strong as possible coming out of the window."

Rankin returned from a family holiday last week - admitting he had to lock his phone away in a safe to escape all the outside noise - and put his players through their paces on the Broadwood pitch before it is ripped up shortly to be relayed.
A new pitch will be installed over the next few weeks, leaving Accies to train on the outside pitches at the venue and forcing them to play their 'home' games in the Premier Sports Cup next month at K-Park in East Kilbride.
Rankin said: "We started on the pitch at Broadwood last week. There is a different feel and setup to it, but the freshness of it caused a bit of a buzz.

"So far it has been good. We know the pitch is getting lifted, but we've managed to get a feel of the surroundings.
"We've got some players in on trial and we are looking to make sure the boys are in the best shape they can be.
"Everybody is back and refreshed. You live football 24/7 when you are here and even when you go away on holiday you still think about it, so you have to try and put your phone in the safe and just leave it there, enjoy the time with your family.
"It shouldn't be that way where your family end up second - and a lot of time in football that can happen - so it was very valuable and important to have that time away.
"It was good to get some time in the sun to recharge the batteries, but now we are ready to go again."

Premiership club appoint youth guru who nurtured Lewis Ferguson, James McCarthy and James McArthur

The experienced coach spent two decades overseeing Hamilton Accies' youth academy and nurtured the likes of James McCarthy, James McArthur, Lewis Ferguson and Greg Docherty during his time in South Lanarkshire. Now he's back in youth football once again after landing his latest job at Livingston, where he will work alongside Brian Rice and Brian Potter again, along with David Martindale for the first time. Speaking to Livingston's website after completing his move, Cairns said: 'I'm delighted to be joining Livingston as Academy Director. Following many positive discussions with the board I believe I can push the academy forward to new heights by developing an efficient cycle of talent through our ranks and into the First Team, to add to the momentum and feel-good factor currently surrounding the club. 'I'm fresh and ready for the challenge after taking a season long break from football following a two-decade stint at Hamilton Academical. "During that time, I progressed from part–time coach into the Academy Director role, where I oversaw the professional development and wellbeing of hundreds of young aspiring players, as well as staff, year on year. "In that time, the academy graduates we produced have registered over 1000 professional appearances, as well as 100+ international caps, with the likes of James McCarthy and James McArthur winning the FA Cup, and more recently, Lewis Ferguson winning the Coppa Italia with the Bologna side which he captains. 'They thrived in an environment which valued high standards consisting of hard work, humility and respect. "The culture we created was tested on the highest possible stage as we made two ventures into the UEFA Youth League, where we went toe–to–toe with the likes of Basel, FC Midtjylland and Molde. "That environment and culture is what I'll be looking to replicate at Livingston, and I very much look forward to what the future holds.' Cairns was an influential figure in the transformation of Accies' academy which led to the breakthrough of the aforementioned international stars. He helped current Livi stars Lewis Smith and Andy Winter flourish in senior football too as they were handed their first team debuts as teenagers at Accies. Lions boss Martindale reckons the appointment could be the club's most important 'signing' this summer. He said: 'When the opportunity to bring George in came along, I spoke to the board and asked if it was something we could do. 'They were very supportive and it's a huge step forward for our academy. 'I'm really looking forward to working with George and offering my support and availability whenever needed, as I know he will be fantastic for the academy. 'It's potentially the most important signing this summer – that's how important George will be for the academy, and subsequently for the club.' More to follow. Lennon Miller returns to Motherwell today for the start of pre-season training but how long he remains with the club remains to be seen. The 18-year-old midfielder is Scottish football's hottest property right now and, if speculation is to be believed, he will be off to pastures new before the end of the summer transfer window. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad The newly capped Scotland international may not have played his last match in claret and amber just yet though. Motherwell have eight competitive matches - four in the Premier Sports Cup group stages followed by the opening four Premiership games of the season - before the September 1 transfer deadline, by which time Miller will have turned 19. Lennon Miller made his Scotland debut off the bench against Iceland earlier this month. | SNS Group Clubs linked with a move for the talented playmaker include Celtic, Sunderland, Udinese, Strasbourg and Union Saint-Gilloise. Others will also be watching with interest. His father, Lee, himself a former Scotland striker who played for Aberdeen, Hearts and Falkirk among others, has hinted that his son is open to moving abroad. Another footballing dad, Derek Ferguson, believes Miller possesses the ability to follow his own son's career path. Lewis Ferguson joined Bologna from Aberdeen three years ago and has taken Serie A by storm, winning individual awards and captaining the side to Coppa Italia glory last month. "I've watched Lennon as a 16-year-old, he's added to his game already this season, so he's improving. You can just see he's going to thrive." Miller senior revealed that Lennon had "asked questions" of the foreign-based Scots when on international duty. "He's confident in his own ability, but he's not arrogant with it," he said. "It's good to see him in this environment and thriving in it. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad "He's mature enough to go and kick on in his career and he needs to do that himself. I'm more confident that he would go over there and thrive. I think it would take his game to another level. "That's the way he plays. He organises, he takes the ball under pressure. It was proud for me as a dad watching it, seeing him being himself and not changing for anyone." After two years and 76 appearances in the Motherwell first team, the time feels right for Miller to move on. The club also has good reason to think so as it may be their last chance to properly cash in on a player who has just one year left on his contract with a value of around £5million mooted. "He's back in at Motherwell training tomorrow," Lee Miller added. "We'll just wait and see what happens, but he just ultimately wants to play football. Yes, he wants to further his career and there's been lots of chat about different clubs.
