Hamilton Accies confirm move to Broadwood Stadium

The embattled Lanarkshire club – relegated from the Scottish Premiership in 2021 – have been mired in financial and ownership difficulties, and were demoted from the Championship last month after incurring a 15-point deduction for breaching multiple Scottish Professional Football League rules. Amid the turbulence, Accies opted to leave New Douglas Park – their home since 2001 – due to a dispute over stadium ownership. Their request to play their home games at Broadwood in Cumbernauld was passed by the SPFL on Thursday, with a two-year lease – and the option of a third year if necessary – agreed with North Lanarkshire Council. Hamilton stated that their 'long-term ambition remains to return to the Hamilton area at the earliest opportunity' once they are 'stronger, more stable, and better equipped to serve the club and its community'. 'This relocation has not been undertaken lightly,' read a statement confirming the move. 'As part of our agreement, the club was required to commit to paying a full year of rental, operational, and security costs upfront, a significant financial obligation that has had immediate consequences for our liquidity. 'Compounding this challenge, since May we have been unable to sell season tickets, generate commercial income, or secure a shirt sponsor while awaiting formal confirmation of our league participation for the upcoming campaign. 'Despite these clear disadvantages, we remain undeterred. This move marks a turning point. A rebirth for Hamilton Academical Football Club. Our time away will be used strategically: to rebuild the club's financial strength, establish proper governance, and put in place a modern, accountable Board of Directors that will uphold the highest standards of compliance, professionalism, and ambition. 'We are committed to becoming a club of integrity, purpose, and innovation. 'We understand the emotional impact this temporary move may have. We apologise to our loyal supporters for the inconvenience, but we promise this: we will fight for our future, and when we return to Hamilton, it will be with a club that is revitalised and stronger in every sense. 'This is not the end of our story, it is the beginning of a bold new chapter.' Accies previously played outside of Hamilton – at Firhill and Cliftonhill – for seven years after selling former ground Douglas Park to a supermarket in 1994.

Hamilton Accies part company with Jamie Barjonas as player exodus continues

The League One outfit have said their goodbyes to more players this week Jamie Barjonas has become the latest player to leave Hamilton Academical as the club prepares to begin pre-season training on Monday. Crisis-hit Accies, who are still waiting to hear from the SPFL if their switch to Broadwood Stadium this summer has been ratified, have seen a number of players depart in recent weeks after their relegation to League One. The club was hit with a 15-point deduction for breaching multiple SPFL rules and they have since announced their academy has left the club's spiritual home at New Douglas Park for a new location in the town. ‌ Midfielder Barjonas was out of contract at the end of May and won't be having his deal at Accies renewed. ‌ His exit follows that of Connor Murray earlier this week after he opted to join Northern Ireland Premiership side Coleraine, where he spent a spell on loan in summer 2024. This summer Accies have so far lost skipper Sean McGinty and Euan Henderson to Lanarkshire rivals Airdrie, while goalkeeper Charlie Albinson and striker Nikolay Todorov have triggered relegation release clauses. So far, winger Steven Bradley is the only signing extension the club has announced. Their released and retained list is still to be published. Meanwhile, it is understood midfielder Barry Maguire also has a relegation release clause but is yet to decide if he will be going or staying, with the club eager for him to stick around. Accies boss John Rankin will report back for duty with his players on Monday as preparations begin for the 2025/26 campaign, but they will do so shrouded in uncertainty. The proposed move to Broadwood has still to be officially sanctioned and the league fixtures are due to be released on Friday.

Hamilton Accies goalkeeper exits after frustrating spell

Charlie Albinson joins Reghan Tumilty, Sean McGinty and Nikolay Todorov out the door at Accies Hamilton Accies have parted company with goalkeeper Charlie Albinson as boss John Rankin gets set to begin preparations for their League One campaign. The Accies boss will return from holiday tomorrow and it is expected the club will be able to finalise their list of retained and released players in the coming days. ‌ Lanarkshire Live Sport understands Albinson, 28, had a relegation release clause in his contract and is already working on a move to a new club. He joins a list of players to be released in the last few weeks, including SPFL Trust Trophy final hero Reghan Tumilty. Defender Sean McGinty has left to join local rivals Airdrieonians and striker Nikolay Todorov has also departed. ‌ Englishman Albinson joined Accies from Ayr United last summer and made 21 appearances. He fell out of favour at New Douglas Park and his last outing for the club came back on January 28 in a 3-0 home defeat to Raith Rovers. Where Hamilton Accies are playing league games next season is yet to be confirmed with the SPFL still to ratify the club's tenancy agreement with North Lanarkshire Council to play at Broadwood Stadium on a temporary basis. Accies announced in May they were leaving New Douglas Park after failing to secure a deal to buy the stadium from its current owners. Accies will play their 'home' games in the Premier Sports Cup next month at K-Park in East Kilbride after a deal was struck to host matches there while a new pitch is laid at Broadwood over the next few weeks. Rankin's men are due to travel to Lowland League side Caledonian Braves on June 20 for their first pre-season friendly, the same day the SPFL fixtures will be released. The clash is one of four pre-season friendlies planned although a full list hasn't yet been released by the club. Bellshill Athletic have announced they will play an Accies XI on Wednesday, July 9.
