Red Bull chief admits Max Verstappen won't be happy as F1 car plans discussed
Red Bull technical director Pierre Wache knows that Max Verstappen is 'our main asset' and that means no prospect of changing the car so that it is easier for Yuki Tsunoda to drive
Red Bull's top technical chief has ruled our making their car easier to drive in order to help Yuki Tsunoda find his feet. That's because sacrificing performance for comfort is likely to upset "our main asset" Max Verstappen.
Red Bull are no longer the dominant force on the Formula 1 grid with rivals McLaren currently ruling the roost. But Verstappen has continued to perform with two race victories to his name so far in 2025 and the Dutchman is third in the drivers' championship behind only Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.
In contrast, the second seat at the team remains a source of great frustration. Liam Lawson was dropped after just two rounds as he buckled under the pressure, but his more experienced replacement Tsunoda has also struggled and hit a new low in Barcelona when he qualified 20th and dead last.
Tsunoda had put in some impressive performances for sister team Racing Bulls, whose car is slower but more driveable than Red Bull's temperamental RB21. But while the team believes they can learn from their junior outfit, technical director Pierre Wache has ruled out going down the same route altogether.
"It's difficult – we are a team and problems are part of it," the Frenchman told RacingNews365. "We are rewarded for the team championship. It's very important to have a second driver performing well. As a technical [leader], it's important to have two drivers giving feedback and views. Even more if they operate close to each other, it's even better for us at the top.
"At the moment, it's not what we have. We have to try and help Yuki as much as possible, like we did in the past. We didn't manage with Checo [Sergio Perez], we didn't manage with Liam. With Yuki, we are trying."
But when asked if Red Bull could choose driveability over outright pace to help bring Tsunoda closer to the front of the grid, Wache said the team would not be willing to risk angering Verstappen who likely wouldn't be pleased with the loss of performance. He added: "I'm not sure that we want to create a VCARB.
"We can learn stuff but, if we gave that to Max, I'm not sure that he would be happy. He's our main asset in terms of performance. [We don't want to] reduce the overall potential of the car to make it easier."
The RB21 has been a superb qualifying car in Verstappen's hands – he has beaten even the McLarens to pole position for three of the nine Grands Prix held so far in 2025 and he has an average qualifying position of third on the grid. Race pace, however, hasn't always been able to match.
That is where the sister Racing Bulls car has been stronger, allowing drivers to manage tyre wear better and that is the key characteristic that Wache wants to take from the VCARB 02 and apply it to the RB21. He said: "It doesn't mean we don't have to improve. What we can extract from these cars is the degradation, the race pace."

Daughter's wedding claim 'fake' Reports emerged last year that Schumacher attended daughter Gina-Maria's wedding to Iain Bethke in Majorca. While the Schumachers do own a property on the island, claims that Michael was there as his daughter was tying the knot were branded "fake news". Former Benetton team-mate Johnny Herbert said: "Unfortunately, from what I understand, that was all A1 fake news and no truth in it." Helmet signing Earlier this year, it emerged that Schumacher penned his signature on a helmet for fellow F1 icon Sir Jackie Stewart's dementia charity. He is different and is wonderfully guided by his wife and children, who protect him." Schumacher's inner circle Earlier this year, RTL's Felix Gorner said that Schumacher is "completely dependant" on caregivers and "can no longer express himself verbally". Now 56, he has been kept out of public view ever since, with only a select number of visitors allowed inside the family home near Lake Geneva in Switzerland, where he is receiving round-the-clock medical care. Earlier this month, one of his former team bosses, Flavio Briatore, revealed he is in regular communication with Schumacher's wife, Corinna. The Italian, who was in charge at Benetton, where the German won his first two F1 titles, told Corriere della Sera: "If I close my eyes, I see him smiling after a victory. "I prefer to remember him like that rather than him just lying on a bed. Corinna and I talk often, though." That followed a more detailed update from Briatore's ex-wife, Elisabetta Gregoraci, who claimed: "Michael doesn't speak, he communicates with his eyes. It raised huge hopes among fans amid previous rumours of progress in his condition. However, the Schumacher family took legal action against the magazine, with the report branded 'irresponsible' . The court hearing resulted in Schumacher's lawyer, Felix Damm, revealing that the then-47-year-old was unable to walk or stand, even with assistance. 'Unfortunately, we are forced by a recent press report to clarify that the assertion that Michael could move again is not true,' a family statement said. 'Such speculation is irresponsible because, given the seriousness of his injuries, his privacy is very important for Michael. Unfortunately, they also give false hopes to many involved people.' Reported stem cell treatment In 2019, Schumacher was reported to have undergone stem cell treatment in an effort to regenerate his nervous system. Le Parisien claimed he was admitted for transfusions of inflammation-reducing stem cells, and also quoted an anonymous nurse who claimed Schumacher was showing signs of recovery. "Yes he is in my service," the nurse said. "And I can assure you that he is conscious." However, the racer is believed to have developed muscle atrophy and osteoporosis after being bed-bound. French magazine Paris Match spoke to what it described as "close relatives" ahead of his 50th birthday in January 2019. The magazine quoted one as saying: "When you put him in his wheelchair facing the beautiful panorama of the mountains overlooking the lake, Michael sometimes cries." The Schumacher family refused to comment on any of the reports or confirm the stem cell treatment. Daughter's wedding claim rebuffed Reports surfaced in Germany last year claiming Schumacher was present at the wedding of his daughter, Gina-Maria, and Iain Bethke in Majorca. While the family does have a home on the Spanish island, reports that Michael attended his daughter's nuptials were dismissed as 'fake news'.
