‘Rock bottom': Aussie actor Dan Ewing's shocking before-and-after post

Australian actor Dan Ewing has opened up about his 'rock bottom' moment, describing himself as a 'depressed alcoholic' before recently turning his life and health around.
Ewing spoke out in a candid post to mark his 40th birthday, sharing two contrasting photos of himself: One of him today, looking super-fit, and another from a year ago, when he said he was struggling with alcohol dependency and 'crushed by internal trauma.'
But Home and Away star Ewing said his 'absolute rock bottom' moment didn't come until six months after his 'before' photo was taken, at the end of 2024.
'That's when the universe finally said, 'Enough.' And it took the wheel from me,' he wrote.
'It was one of the most painful, soul-shaking, transformative moments of my life.
From that rock bottom came the decision to get sober and that one choice changed
everything.'
Ewing didn't offer specific details about what exactly had happened during his 'rock bottom' moment to make him decide to seek help.
The actor revealed that he's celebrating his 40th while shooting a film in Fiji, a career opportunity that he says never 'would have happened without that hard decision. That moment I asked for help.'
He said that said sobriety 'didn't just transform my life. It allowed me to show up fully – for my family, my friends, and everyone I encounter.'
The Aussie star said he had plan to celebrate his milestone birthday that reflected his new-found healthy lifestyle: 'I'm soaking up the sun, hitting the gym, and celebrating with some of my beautiful cast and crew here in Fiji tonight — over a Pepsi Max or four.'
Ewing's fans applauded his honesty in the candid post, with one follower commenting that they had 'no idea' what he'd been privately dealing with.
'I'm so proud of you that you won that battle,' one fan wrote.
'Be proud of yourself,' another told him.
Ewing is best-known for his long-running role as Heath Braxton in the Seven soap Home and Away, and has also appeared in films including 2020's Love and Monsters and 2023's Godless: The Eastfield Exorcism.
Father of two Ewing made headlines in 2018 when he was involved in a heated altercation with his son's stepfather during a custody swap – a confrontation that saw him slapped with an AVO. Ewing later during his 2021 stint on the reality series SAS Australia.

Mister Bianco books Winx Guineas bid with winning hat-trick

Peter Tighe will now get a golden chance to win the Winx Guineas with a horse wearing the colours of his legendary champion. Winx's part-owner Tighe knows Mister Bianco is no Winx, but he was more than happy to win the $150,000 TL Cooney (1350m) at Ipswich as the three-year-old gelding made it a hat-trick of wins. Trainer Bruce Cross and owner/breeder Malcolm Chung are best known via the deeds of the sensational siblings, Epsom winner Final Fantasy and Canberra Cup winner Padfoot Charlie. Now, a quarter of a century on, the pair may have themselves another 'good horse' from the very same 'vines' that produced their former dynamic duo. Her name is Just Like Tilda. The daughter of Divine Prophet created a lasting impression when finishing over the top of her rivals to score an impressive, bookie-busting, debut win at Kembla earlier this month when crunched from an opening quote of $6.50 into $4.80. Cross could be forgiven for talking up Just Like Tilda on the score of her debut but is playing down any hype. 'At the moment, I am holding my powder dry,' Cross said. 'And to be honest, Deanne might have very well been on her when she won at Kembla except she was suspended. 'Deanne rode a winner (on Thursday) at Gosford, she is very underrated.' Just Like Tilda is the third foal of her dam Matilda Jade whose foaling date (September 14 in 2011) was the exact same day as Winx. Matilda Jade was bred and raced by Chung and trained by Cross but sadly, the daughter of I Am Invincible only raced once, finishing runner-up at Gundagai. 'We took her there thinking she would win easily but she got galloped on and severed a tendon so that was the only start she ever had,' Cross said. DESERT OPAL (5) has a win, four seconds and a third from his 11 starts, His personal best came last start on May 27 when he won a 1400m Maiden at home at Albury on a Heavy 8. This grey filly by Star Turn has finished on the podium at eight of her 12 starts. ELASTANE MISS (3) has done nothing wrong in her four starts; she won at Albury on a Heavy 10 and all the rest are seconds including one here at home. Obviously Condor is flying, pardon the pun. MAJOR TIME (5) is a grand old campaigner from the Gratz Vella camp. He's got a good set of numbers across the board and as for each-way punters are concerned; he has won and placed at 34 of his 65 starts.
