Michael Bolton, singer and longtime Detroit supporter, opens up about brain cancer

Yahoo30-04-2025

Michael Bolton is sharing a deeply personal chapter in his life: a battle with brain cancer that led to two surgeries in the span of just weeks.
The 72-year-old Grammy winner and Detroit aficionado was diagnosed with glioblastoma — a rare and aggressive form of brain cancer— in December 2023.
Bolton underwent emergency surgery to remove a brain tumor in December 2023 and underwent another brain surgery in January 2024 due to an infection, according to an April 30 People magazine interview where the singer opened up about his diagnosis.
He told the magazine he finished radiation and chemotherapy treatment in October, and his most recent scan was clear in early April. Bolton said he has intentionally not received a prognosis, and People noted that glioblastoma has a roughly 90% recurrence rate.
According to People, Bolton's treatments have impacted his "short-term memory, speech, and mobility."
'You're reaching into your resources and your resolve in a way that you never would have thought,' Bolton told People. 'Succumbing to the challenge is not an option. You're really quickly drawn into a duel. I guess that's the way you find out what you're made of.'
The prolific singer's body of work spans five decades, and he has won two Grammys for the songs "How Am I Supposed to Live Without You" and "When a Man Loves a Woman." In 2023, Bolton released his first new album of original songs in 14 years, "Spark of Light," which he followed up with the holiday album "Christmas Time." He was a contestant on "The Masked Singer" earlier that same year.
Bolton's 2013 album, "Ain't No Mountain High Enough: A Tribute to Hitsville USA," deepened his connection to the City of Detroit through its focus on Motown hits and eventually inspired his 2018 documentary, "American Dream: Detroit." The film, a personal passion project, pays tribute to the Motor City's cultural and musical history while spotlighting the entrepreneurs, artists and innovators driving its revival.

The documentary features Aretha Franklin, Smokey Robinson, Alice Cooper, Mayor Mike Duggan, John Varvatos, developer Dan Gilbert, and Detroit Free Press columnist Mitch Albom.
Bolton previously shared in January 2024 that he would take a step back from touring after undergoing surgery to remove a brain tumor. At the time, he said he was "recuperating at home and surrounded by the tremendous love and support of my family," adding that he would devote his time and energy to his recovery over the following months. The announcement came after Bolton rescheduled a show in his home state of Connecticut in December 2023 due to illness.
In March 2024, Bolton shared in an update that he was "healing well and doing better every day" while "enjoying the company of my daughters and grandkids" at home.
In December, Bolton posted a photo of himself celebrating the holidays with his family. "Sending warm wishes for a holiday season filled with peace, love, and joy," he wrote. "May the New Year bring health, happiness, and countless moments to cherish. Here's to fresh starts and beautiful moments in 2025!"
Despite the physical toll of treatment, the star said he's found strength in being open about his experience.
'Whenever you find yourself in any kind of challenging position, just to know that you're not alone going through it is a big deal,' Bolton told People. 'It actually helps people to know. It reminds them that they're not alone.'
Bolton has been spending more time at home in Westport, Connecticut, where he's lived for over three decades, according to People. These days, much of his focus is on family, including his daughters and six grandchildren — Amelia, 14; Olivia, 13; Dylan, 11; Grayson, 10; River, 9; and Jack, 8.
According to the Cleveland Clinic, glioblastoma is a "devastating" type of cancer that "can result in death in fewer than six months without treatment." It begins as a growth of cells in the brain or spinal cord and "grows quickly," and symptoms can include headaches, decline in brain functions and memory loss, per the Mayo Clinic

The National Brain Tumor Society describes glioblastoma as "one of the most complex, deadly, and treatment-resistant cancers," with a five-year survival rate of 6.9%. In 2018, Sen. John McCain died from glioblastoma after being diagnosed the previous year.
USA TODAY's KiMi Robinson contributed to this report.

9 Best Moments From Dua Lipa's Crowning Moment at London's Wembley Stadium

When Dua Lipa's electrifying Glastonbury Festival headline performance lit up the iconic Pyramid Stage last year, it was undeniable that the British-Albanian pop star's ascent had not finished. More from Billboard Dua Lipa Brings Surprise Guest Charli XCX to the Stage for '360' in London Morgan Wallen Walks Out With NFL Legend Andre Johnson & 'Mattress Mack' at Houston Tour Launch: Watch Watch Benson Boone Embrace His Haters in Joke-Filled 'Mr. Electric Blue' Music Video With a newly crowned No. 1 album in the Kevin Parker-produced Radical Optimism — which earned her the achievement of biggest opening week by a British female artist since Adele's 30 in 2021 — and charting singles 'Houdini,' 'Training Season' and 'Illusion,' the three-time Grammy winner proved herself capable of commanding one of music's most important stages while demonstrating that no dream was too big for her to manifest — the positive (and clearly effective) manifestation method she credits for getting her there in the first place. Yet before the tents had even been dismantled on Somerset's Worthy Farm, she was already plotting her bold next move which would take the Radical Optimism tour to bigger and better stages around the world. 'There came a point in the year where I was thinking, 'I've got to sit down and write some new dreams and new plans,'' she told Billboard U.K. last year. 'I feel like I ticked so many of my boxes this year.' Still 'flying high' from Glastonbury, she announced a show at London's 90,000-capacity Wembley Stadium, which sold out in a matter of minutes. Huge demand led to a second night, which swiftly followed suit. Kicking off her U.K. and Ireland run during the hottest week of the year, the final days of June will also see Lipa play stadiums in Liverpool and Dublin before she embarks on a U.S. arena run in the autumn. Here are the nine best moments from Dua Lipa's show at Wembley Stadium on Friday (June 20). With more than enough hits to her name to guarantee an explosive opener, punchy Radical Optimism single 'Training Season' was given the honor of kicking off proceedings as the singer's shimmering arrival on stage and impassioned vocals — quite literally — sent sparks flying through the air. Sparkling pyrotechnics erupted every few seconds throughout the dynamic track, including one particularly thrilling moment after the bridge where fireworks shot up perfectly in beat with the song. 'Wembley! You guys ready for a party?' Lipa asked cheekily before introducing the song that never fails to lead a thoroughly British sing-along. After becoming an unofficial football anthem for impassioned Liverpool football fans, it felt especially fitting to hear the pop star's most chantable lyrics reverberate in the 90,000-strong Wembley crowd, as voices of all ages and octaves hollered the infectious tune back at her while pumping their arms in frenzied unison. When you have a back catalog as hook-filled as this, it's easy to fill a finely tuned set with all the hits and best bits. Tracks like 'Levitating,' 'Electricity,' 'Houdini' and 'New Rules' were just some of the highlights that punctuated two hours of uninterrupted summer disco magic, as Lipa's decade of pop smashes ensured there was barely a moment to recover between tracks, earning the undivided attention of one of the biggest crowds of her career with total ease. If the sheer disbelief in the singer's dewey eyes didn't already say it all, Lipa carved out an intentional pause early in the set to tell the crowd how she'd waited 'my whole life' for this moment. 'It's so surreal, it's so crazy,' she continued as she scanned the vastness of the gargantuan crowd gazing back at her. Reflecting on her first London show a decade ago to just 350 people, the gravity of the milestone clearly powered her energy levels down to the final seconds of the performance. When your fans have queued for hours to secure a front-row spot in a stadium during a heatwave, it's only right you take a moment to say hello. Pausing her tightly choreographed spectacle just 30 minutes in to get up close and personal with barrier-clutching concertgoers, Lipa nattered away, signed autographs and took selfies with fans who squealed down the microphone in excitement — or could barely find any words at all — some of whom had traveled from as far as Portugal to be there. There were quiet hopes that Dua Lipa would mark the occasion of her first Wembley show with a special guest or two. Instead of introducing one of her many former collaborators, she invited someone who 'really inspired me from the moment that I started making music' and has 'been a trailblazer for British music'. Moments later, Jamiroquai's Jay Kay strutted onto the stage in a white fringed jacket and luminous purple trousers to perform his 1996 acid jazz classic 'Virtual Insanity', as their loose and limber vocals gelled instantly. If her Glastonbury performance didn't already prove that choreography is fast becoming one of the star's strong suits, night one at Wembley showed that Lipa's dance moves are very much a key part of her pop star package. Whether she was following her own groove or locking into her backup dancers' high-energy routines, there was no doubt that her disco-pop songs are increasingly taking on their own shapes. Armed with sequin-filled wardrobe changes, confetti cannons, multi-colored streamers, perfectly-timed pyro and even a retro dance-along workout to 'Physical', this was a dance party from start to finish. With a ship run as tightly as this one, spontaneous moments during the concert felt all the more special. 'Happy For You', a low-key gem from Radical Optimism, found Dua Lipa at her vocal best and truly in a flow state. Standing centered atop a raised stage as she stripped away all the frills, the crowd instinctively lit up the stands with their phones at just the right moment as the dusky sky slipped into the night. Milestones like this invite moments of reflection, and there was no better song to represent a full circle journey than Lipa's 2015 hit 'Be the One,' which remains a setlist staple and one of her biggest songs to date. Channeling the ambition of that 20-year-old singer with big pop dreams, her solo moment on a smaller stage situated in the crowd was symbolic and powerful as she led her usual call and response. 'Now that's what a stadium sounds like!' 49 People Going Through It Who Made Me Laugh A Lot

Look, we've all had times when we've been going THROUGH IT. And when it's happening to us, it's not very funny. But when it's happening to other people? Well, it can be hilarious! (Does admitting that make me a monster? I think it might.) Well, if you're a monster like me, here are 50 people who are REALLY going through it (and also really funny): This boyfriend after his autocorrect disaster: This clown-hating diner at a restaurant where Mr. Giggles (or whoever) kept popping up on the digital menu: And this grade school teacher trying like hell to remember her students' names: This fast food manager stuck dealing with some not exactly A+ employees: This Great British Bake Off contestant hanging on by a thread: And this TMI dad having a really crappy time: This hungry person after coming outside and seeing their McDonald's order: These dudes at a Burger King in the middle of the night: And this truck driver after his epic mishap: Oof: Double oof: And — you guessed it — triple oof: This unpopular OnlyFans model: This wrong number texter: And this down bad dude who is WAY too attached to their AI: This realtor struggling to sell this house: This guy passed out at a wedding: And this dude who ended up in the ER when his hemorrhoid burst — and then got this gift from a smartass friend: The guy who got this message after throwing out his back: This guy and his Grammy throwing a fit over Beyoncé's win: And this crack user struggling with inflation like the rest of us: This guy getting scammed: Whoever this computer belongs to: And this Southeast Asian in the Netherlands struggling with the height This teacher who is OVER Gen Z slang: This teacher trying to survive with the worst possible name for teaching teenagers: And this employee who REALLY hates that her company's name tags only use an initial for the last name: This struggling math student trying — and failing — to use Jesus to pass a test: This kid after the cringiest prom ever: And this person who doesn't need an app pointing out how boring their life is: The kid who wrote this "when I grow up" section: This professor who seems like they're going through something: And the student who posted this — and just might be in the above professor's class: This tired neighbor: The partners at this bank: And this dude who dropped a part on his foot and broke it (but at least he got this care package from a co-worker): This at least she has this guy's support (eye roll): This slug-fearing wife who found one in the house (this is how she dealt with it, lol — the note is for her husband): The note reads: "Scary slug infiltrated. Hid him in a trolley under pile of salt under glass bowl. Very sorry, but could you deal with it? Love you x." And this person was over having to constantly discuss their accident: This dude going down an angry, self-loathing spiral: Yikes: This dude who bought Tinder Gold only to get infographics like this: And this woman who did something there's no coming back from: This poor boyfriend (who is in the denial phase): And this person who is really struggling to quit smoking: This person I am sending a virtual hug to: This person who just wanted to get healthy: This person — back when they wrote this poem in the fourth grade: This arcade owner who simply CANNOT listen to another kid swear: And lastly, this person who just wanted to drive out of the garage and head home, but discovered this very intimidating kitty had other plans:
