Countdown EP Derek Haas Welcomes ‘24 Meets Graceland' Comparison, Teases One Surprise He Has Planned
More than 13 years after co-creating Chicago Fire and thus helping sire the popular #OneChicago Universe, Derek Haas was looking to break free of the broadcast procedural formula, with Prime Video's Countdown.
Created by Haas, Countdown is set in motion when an officer with the Department of Homeland Security is murdered in broad daylight. Special Agent in Charge Blythe (played by Euphoria's Eric Dane) in turn heads up task force 'Hurricane,' comprised of LAPD detective Mark Meachum (Supernatural's Jensen Ackles), DEA badass Amber Oliveras (All Rise's Jessica Camacho), LAPD gangs unit officer Lucas Finau (Young Rock's Uli Latukefu), and FBI agents Evan Shepherd (The Flash's Violett Beane) and Keyonte Bell (The Boys' Elliot Knight).

The cast also includes Bogdan Yasinski (Boch: Legacy) and Jonathan von Mering (The Pitt) as the villainous Borys Volchek and his henchman Adrej; Jonatha Togo (The Chosen) as Blythe's righthand man Damon Drew; and Merrick McCartha (All American) as District Attorney Grayson Valwell.
As opposed to broadcast dramas (such as FBI: International, which Haas also co-created) that seldom get more than, maybe, a two-hour finale to tackle a major, deadly threat, Countdown as a streaming series has the luxury of spending more time with good guys and bad guys alike.
'I'd written novels before, and I wanted this to be almost like chapters in a book,' Haas shares with TVLine. 'That way it could be a story that had an ever-evolving threat — and twists and turns within that threat — but you could spend time with the antagonists, which is something that we rarely did on those other shows, and then also get to know this team over a longer period of time as the case evolves.'
Another deviation from the norm that Haas was all too happy to indulge in involves the pacing of this task force's pursuit of the enigmatic and highly dangerous Volcheck over the span of a 13-episode season.
'What I wanted to do differently than a lot of shows in this genre do is I wanted to surprise the audience with when this case is going to end,' Haas shares. 'A lot of times on shows like this, you think the end of the season will be the end of that case, but I don't want the audience thinking that they can take some time off and then catch up later. No, you've got to be along for the ride.'
A mash-up of FBI, LAPD and DEA officers, chipping away at a series of leads in the name of neutralizing a global threat? Season 1 felt very much like '24 meets Graceland,' if you ask me. Haas himself embraces my comparison, but also adds to it.
'I love it. Those are great examples, and definitely were talked about before we started,' he says. 'But as much as it was 24 when I was initially talking to Amazon about this show, I was also talking about '80s movies that I love, like Die Hard and Lethal Weapon, and Raiders of the Lost Ark — movies that had these upbeat, 'Can't wait to get to the next day,' love-their-jobs, throwback action stars.
'That really was where the inspiration for casting Jensen Ackles came from,' he adds, 'and I was lucky that I got him.'
Prime Video's Countdown premieres Wednesday, June 25, with its first three episodes, followed by weekly drops through Sept. 3.

'The Boys' Jensen Ackles Excited for Reunion With ‘Supernatural' Co-Star in Season 5
When the 15-season run of the popular series Supernatural came to a close, many fans were disappointed for several reasons. One was that the duo of Jensen Ackles (Dean Winchester) and Jared Padalecki (Sam) would be no more. However, Supernatural creator Eric Kripke, who also leads the way in the hit Amazon Prime Video series The Boys, ensured that wouldn't be the case. Padalecki was cast in the upcoming Season 5 of The Boys, and previously revealed to TV Insider that he would be featured in the same storyline, frame and interacting with Ackles, along with another Supernatural co-star, Misha Collins. 'It's a blast," Kripke said. "We already shot it. I will confirm that Jared, Jensen, and Misha are all in the same frame together, and in the same storyline, and interacting with each other.' While speaking with Collider about his new series, Countdown, Ackles addressed the reunion with his former co-star, Padalecki, on The Boys, and the excitement about working together again was obvious. 'There's a reason he and I did that show for 15 years because we truly got along, we truly enjoy working together, and we're effectively brothers in real life, too," Ackles said. "So anytime we get a chance to mix it up and do stuff, it's always a blast. He's the best. You can put us two in front of anything; we'll get the job done.' 'We Were Liars': Esther McGregor breaks down 'bravest' and 'difficult' scenes with Candice King, Emily Alyn Lind
The most popular show on Prime Video, We Were Liars, is bringing fans to tears with it's devastating and shocking finale. Starring Emily Alyn Lind, Mamie Gummer, Caitlin FitzGerald, Candice King, David Morse, Shubham Maheshwari, Esther McGregor, Joseph Zada and Rahul Kohli, the captivating drama has audiences hooked. We Were Liars really leans into its most emotional moments, with the cast really taking on every twist, turn and wounding moment with conviction. One of those moments that really stands out is between Mirren (Esther McGregor) and her mother Bess (Candice King), after Bess finds out her daughter saw her affair with "Salty Dan," a harbour service worker, and shared that information with The Liars. Specifically, Bess is angry her sister Penny (Caitlin Fitzgerald) has that information and is holding it over her head, preventing her from getting more money from her father to reconcile her debt. In Episode 5 Bess confronts Mirren, destroying all of Mirren's beautiful art. "You are not an artist. You are a dilettante and you're a child," Bess says. "I'm your child," Esther says in response. "I didn't ask for you to waste your life on me. And neither did the twins. You chose to be a mother. ... It's not our fault that you decided to hate it." "It was written very well, first of all, so it was easy to kind of get there," McGregor told Yahoo Canada. "I think that it is a lot of people's narratives to kind of feel shut out as a kid, especially if you've got a young mother, or whatever it is." "I've not necessarily [had that] with my mother, but I've dealt with similar stuff in terms of ... not feeling like I have a place. And I think the courage it takes to say that is really big. ... When she hurts me, ... she hurts my art, and she hurts my art that I made because I was so happy with The Liars, and that was my safe place. And when that fractures, that's big enough to break me. I think Mirren tries to keep it together quite a lot, especially towards her mother. So that was something really interesting ... and I think it's one of her bravest moments in the series. So it's lovely to find that, but really heartbreaking too." By the time we get to the last episode, we see a particularly close bond between Mirren and her cousin Cadence (Emily Alyn Lind), who's spent the season trying to figure out the circumstances of her injury during the summer of her 16th birthday. The conversation in Episode 8 starts with Mirren telling Cadence she wishes she had been kinder to The Littles, but Cadence says Mirren shouldn't have regret, she should be "light as air." Then Mirren starts talking about how she always wanted to be "excellent" at everything, that both she, and her mother, never let themselves me "messy." "I don't think anyone really saw me," Mirren says to Cadence as she starts sobbing. "And now no one ever will." "No, look at me," Cadence says in response. "The Liars saw you Mirren. And I'll see you for the rest of my life." "That moment, that's a difficult one," McGregor said. "It was interesting because that one was I think in the last week of us filming, I think we had like a few days left, so that goodbye felt very real and present." "She was such a guiding light for me, quite motherly towards me, which is really what I needed. Like even if I had my stomach ache, she would set me up with some saltine crackers and my medication. Emily's a very thoughtful person that's very attentive, and I think that definitely blended into our characters and our togetherness." But one satisfying part of the We Were Liars Season 1 ending is that Ed (Rahul Kohli) gets back together with Carrie (Mamie Gummer), after previously leaving following Ed's failed proposal. While Ed and Gat's (Shubham Maheshwari) bond as outsiders to the Sinclairs was compelling to watch, it was also interesting to see how Ed is so important to Carrie's kids, Johnny (Joseph Zada) and Will (Brady Droulis), but is still on the outside of the larger Sinclair family. "That dynamic, it's super relatable," Kohli said. "It's not too dissimilar to my current living circumstances." "I am obviously British born and I live in America, I've been there for 10 years, and some of the people I call my family I still, even at Thanksgiving or across the table, still don't feel 100 per cent a part of that. It's just something that comes with being a fish out of water." But in order for We Were Liars to bring the audience through the peaks and valleys in this thrilling story, the show needed directors who could take on the task. In this case, all five directors, Nzingha Stewart, Julie Plec, Tara Miele, So Yong Kim and Erica Dunton, brilliantly crafted their elements of this intertwining story. "[Nzingha Stewart], who did the very first episode, she set the tone," David Morse, who plays Sinclair family patriarch Harris, said. "She's really excellent with actors and taking time with us as we're discovering things. Especially in that first episode you feel so naked the first time you open your mouth as a character on that first day, and you'd like to know there's somebody there who's there to protect you and help you a little bit. And Nzingha was great with that. ... Towards the end, we had a really terrific director for those really challenging last two episodes. ... And I think we had the right directors at the right time."

BREAKING: Gay porn star Austin Wolf pleads guilty to federal charges of enticing a minor for sex
Just shy of one year since his arrest, Justin Heath Smith—the adult film performer known professionally as Austin Wolf—pleaded guilty Friday in a Manhattan federal courtroom to a felony charge of enticing a 15-year-old boy to engage in sex. Smith, 43, entered the plea before U.S. District Judge Paul A. Engelmayer nearly a year after his June 28, 2024, arrest following an undercover Federal Bureau of Investigation operation. Prosecutors say Smith used electronic communications in late 2023 and early 2024 to lure a minor to New York City for sexual activity, according to court documents. They allege he acted in concert with another adult and knowingly crossed a legal threshold meant to protect minors from predatory conduct. For years, Smith was one of the most prominent figures in gay adult entertainment—commercially successful, widely followed, and carefully branded. The charge carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years in federal prison and a maximum of life. Engelmayer has scheduled Smith's sentencing for September 29 at 11 a.m. in the Thurgood Marshall U.S. Courthouse in lower Manhattan. As part of the plea agreement, Smith consented to the forfeiture of more than two dozen electronic devices seized from his home during an April 2024 raid. That list includes smartphones, hard drives, and multiple Mac computers, which federal investigators say were either used in the commission of the crime or contain evidence of it. Since his arrest, Smith has been held at MDC Brooklyn without bond. The investigation revealed what prosecutors described as 'hundreds of videos' of child sexual abuse material, including content involving prepubescent children and infants. Much of the material was allegedly exchanged via the encrypted messaging platform Telegram. At sentencing, Smith will face federal prison guidelines that start from a high baseline for crimes involving the sexual exploitation of minors. In addition to prison time, he may be ordered to pay a $5,000 penalty under a federal anti-trafficking law that supports services for survivors.
