Construction to begin at Carter Lake reservoir

DENVER (KDVR) — Carter Lake reservoir is getting ready to undergo some upgrades. The 1,100-acre reservoir located in the foothills northwest of Berthoud and southwest of Loveland is on the verge of a multi-year construction project.
The Larimer County Department of Natural Resources said on Tuesday that preliminary staging work is being initiated at the reservoir, in preparation for a project the agency says is aimed at improving roads and enhancing visitor access at both Carter Lake and Horsetooth reservoirs.

The construction project — which will have multiple phases — is being partially funded by the Colorado Federal Lands Access Program, according to the LCDNR.
Mobilization activities at Carter Lake will include site surveying, staging construction equipment and materials and implementing stormwater mitigation measures, the LCDNR said.
Specific project areas set to undergo construction at Carter Lake include:
Eagle Campground main access road and parking lot repaving
County Road 31 turn lane expansion
Quarry Day Use parking lot construction
Big Thompson Day Use Area parking lot construction
North Pines Campground main access road and parking lot repaving
Carter Lake and Horsetooth are the two largest and most visited reservoirs in Larimer County, according to the LCDNR, which said the two also rank in the top 10 in Colorado, attracting more than 1.5 million visitors each year.

Visitors to Carter Lake are asked to follow posted safety protocols while construction is ongoing. Residents who would like more information about the project and to receive regular updates can visit the project website.
Construction at Carter Lake is expected to be completed by early 2026.

National parks will be free to enter on Thursday: Here's why

DENVER (KDVR) — Entrance fees to all 63 of the nation's national parks will be waived on Thursday as the National Park Service commemorates Juneteenth. The day is known by many names — Black Independence Day, Emancipation Day, Jubilee Day — but the reason to celebrate it remains the same throughout: Commemoration of the day that the last African Americans learned they were no longer enslaved people. President Abraham Lincoln had already signed the Emancipation Proclamation, which became official as of Jan. 1, 1863, but African-descended people in Galveston, Texas, learned of the proclamation years later on June 19, 1865 — when a Union general led soldiers into town with the news that the Civil War was over and enslaved people were free. In light of the holiday, fees to enter all national parks in the U.S. will be waived. Juneteenth became a federal holiday in 2021 with legislation signed by former President Biden. 'All Americans can feel the power of this day, and learn from our history,' said at the time. It was the first new national holiday in nearly 40 years, the New York Times reported, since Martin Luther King's birthday became a holiday in 1983.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A man in Kansas City, Missouri, realized he was the winner of a $50,000 Powerball prize nearly two months after buying the ticket. The said the man purchased the Powerball ticket at Mike's Cut Rate Liquors at W. 85th and Wornall Road for the April 19 drawing. Harrisonville names first female police chief in police department's history 'I only play a couple times a year, and I actually didn't check the ticket for like two months,' the winner explained to the Missouri Lottery. He told the Missouri Lottery that he finally got around to checking the ticket at a retailer and saw an unexpected message on the screen. 'It said something that I'd never seen before, so I took it up to the counter and had them check it,' he said. The clerk scanned it and saw the $50,000 prize on the screen. 'He just handed it to me and said, 'Congratulations,' and I left so quickly,' he said. The Missouri Lottery said the winner already had a family vacation planned, which ended up being the day after he learned about the winning ticket.
