Clutch hitting leads SDSU to win over Bison

Yahoo26-04-2025

BROOKINGS, S.D. (SDSU) — South Dakota State scored all six of its runs on two-out hits, including the go-ahead two-run single from Jess Bellows in the bottom of the seventh inning, as the Jackrabbits downed North Dakota State, 6-3, in the opening game of a four-game Summit League baseball series Friday afternoon at Erv Huether Field.
SDSU improved to 10-27 overall and 6-11 in league play. The Bison, who saw their losing skid reach four games, fell to 13-24 overall and 10-8 in The Summit League.
The Jackrabbits grabbed a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a two-run double to left field by Bryce Ronken that plated both Nolan Grawe and Luke Luskey.
SDSU starter Arlen Peters held the Bison hitless through 4 1/3 innings and carried a shutout into the sixth inning. NDSU tied the game at 2-all in the sixth when Jake Schaffner led off with a walk and scored on Davis Hamilton's home run to right-center field. Tristan Augedahl followed with 1 2/3 scoreless innings of relief for SDSU before giving way to closer Dylan Driessen.
After stranding two men in the third, fifth and sixth innings against NDSU starter Nolan Johnson, the Jackrabbits put together a pair of two-out rallies against the Bison bullpen in the late innings. In the home seventh, Luskey and Owen Siegert hit back-to-back two-out singles and Ronken worked a walk to load the bases. In a long at-bat in which he fouled off several two-strike pitches from Skyler Riedinger, Bellows lined a single to center field that brought home both Luskey and Siegert for a 4-2 Jackrabbit lead.
Some anxious moments ensued for the Jackrabbits in the top of the eighth. Hamilton reached on a sun-aided double to right field with one out in the inning and later scored when the throw to third base on a steal attempt glanced far enough off the glove of Grawe to allow Hamilton to race home. Driessen then walked each of the next three batters to load the bases, but the junior right-hander got out of the jam by striking out Alex Urlaub looking on a 3-2 pitch.
SDSU countered with more two-out hitting in the bottom of the eighth. Adam Benes led off with a single against Bison reliever Sam Roberts, but remained there after the next two Jackrabbit hitters were retired. However, Benes moved up two bases on an errant pickoff attempt and scored on Grawe's third hit of the game, an infield single back up the middle. Grawe then circled the bases as Luskey doubled to the fence in left field for the Jackrabbit first baseman's third hit of the game.
The Jackrabbits ended up with a 13-3 advantage in the hit column for the game. Siegert added two hits for SDSU.
Driessen worked a perfect top of the ninth to close out his second win of the season. He struck out four and walked three over the final 2 1/3 innings. Peters also fanned four and walked three in his season-best five-plus innings.
For NDSU, Johnson recorded nine strikeouts, walked two and scattered seven hits over six solid frames.
UP NEXTThe two squads are scheduled to play a doubleheader Saturday, starting at 11 a.m.

Southwest's Diaz and Reagan's Gonzalez are the Dade Boys' Volleyball Players of the Year

The best athletes have that intangible factor, which elevates their team in the toughest of moments. Some call it the 'clutch gene.' Juanmarco Diaz has had that for years on Southwest's boys' volleyball team. And over at Reagan High, they hadn't seen something quite like that in a player until Yeison Gonzalez donned a Bison uniform this season. The two talented and versatile outside hitters helped their respective teams overcome the odds and secure state runner-up finishes this season. As such, Diaz and Gonzalez are the Miami Herald's Miami-Dade County Co-Players of the Year. Diaz won the honor for the third consecutive season as he completed a stellar career, which began his sophomore season when he guided the Eagles to their third state title all-time. This season with a younger roster overall, Southwest found itself in more of an underdog role for most of its top matches. But Diaz's efforts throughout the playoffs propelled the Eagles to huge wins including a win over Columbus in the Class 3A regional final. Unfortunately for Southwest, its bid for redemption fell short in a three-set loss to Winter Park in the state final. 'It was something we expected,' Diaz said. 'We knew Winter Park had much better players than we did and we were really young this season and not expected to make it back. But we pushed through and made it happen.' Diaz, a 5-11 senior who is signed to play college volleyball at Northern Kentucky, totaled 191 kills, 101 digs and 77 assists. Over his career, Diaz proved himself one of the most versatile and talented players in the state. 'I love that and I take on any challenge and just have to enjoy any experience that comes my way,' said Diaz, who plans to study finance and accounting. Gonzalez, a 6-2 outside hitter who has signed to play for Barry University, had experience already when it came to leading a young program to the state tournament. A year after leading Mater Lakes there, Gonzalez took Reagan's program to new heights, leading them to the Class 2A state championship match. He finished with a staggering 446 kills, 168 digs and 56 aces. 'He's brought so much to our program,' said Reagan assistant coach Joshua Garavito of Gonzalez. 'I'm sure it was a very tough decision for him to transfer over and people were always chirping to him about he had made the wrong decision and stuff like that. But he never let it get to his head and stayed strong throughout the process.' The Bison advanced to their first state final and went 25-5, proving themselves one of the top teams overall in the state. The FHSAA expanded boys' volleyball to a three-classification format for the first time this season. Reagan's run ended with a loss in the 2A final to Winter Park Lake Howell, but beat some of Dade's best teams including two wins over Class 3A state runner-up Southwest and victories over Columbus, Palmetto and Belen Jesuit along the way. Before this season, the Bison had never advanced past the regional semifinals. 'I love the faculty and staff here, it's been an honor to help this program to success,' Gonzalez said.

Howard makes history at NCAA Championship

Howard University women's track & field program concluded its outdoor campaign at the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore., hosted by the University of Oregon, with outstanding Bison earning All-American status. Howard was the dominant HBCU program for the women's NCAA Championships. Graduates Kailei Collins (Houston) and Marcia Sey (London, United Kingdom), senior Tiffani-Rae Pittman (Bowie, Md.) and sophomore Aiyana Gray-Williams (Winston-Salem, N.C.) began Day Four with a sixth-place finish in the 4×100 relay, clocking in at 43.23. The four Bison earned All-American First Team honors, becoming the first All-American 4×100 relay squad in program history. USC won the 4×100 relay race with a 42.22 mark. Individually, Sey had her best performance in a Bison uniform, winning bronze in the 100-meter hurdles with a 12.93 time. Her third-place finish is the highest in program history. Additionally, the British native received All-American First Team honors. Oregon's Aaliyah McCormick won the short hurdles, producing a 12.81 mark. Graduate student Noah Langford of Virginia Beach, Virginia, led the Bison with a standout performance in the 400-meter hurdles semifinals. Langford posted a time of 50.50 seconds, falling short of qualifying for the final round but earning Second Team All-America honors. He became the first Howard men's long hurdler to earn All-America recognition since John Branch accomplished it for the Washington, D.C. HBCU in 1989. Baylor's Nathaniel Ezekiel recorded the top 400-meter hurdles time in the semifinals with an impressive 47.86 seconds. Howard also competed in the 4×400-meter relay, featuring Langford, sophomore Emerson McKindra of Linden, New Jersey, and freshmen Cameron Brazell of Houston and Elijah Grant of Fort Mill, South Carolina. The team clocked in at 3:08.92, missing advancement but receiving honorable mention from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). Howard Director of Track & Field David Oliver and the Bison wrapped up another success season, winning a pair of MEAC (Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) crowns during the indoor and outdoor campaigns. HU looks to defend both crowns for the upcoming 2025-26 campaign. The post Howard makes history at NCAA Championship appeared first on HBCU Gameday. Copyright HBCU Gameday 2012-2025

KU earns No. 2 seed in NCAA baseball regionals. Here's Jayhawks' game site & foe

Kansas baseball coach Dan Fitzgerald met with reporters on Monday, May 26, 2025 after the Jayhawks were accorded a No. 2 seed in the NCAA regionals. The Kansas Jayhawks baseball team is headed to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2014. Third-year coach Dan Fitzgerald's KU team finished as runner-up to West Virginia during the Big 12 regular season and lost in the semifinals of the conference's postseason tournament. On Monday the Jayhawks were assigned to a four-team regional in Arkansas as a No. 2 seed among the national field of 64. Advertisement KU will meet No. 3 seed Creighton (41-14) in a first-round regional contest at 7 p.m. Friday at Baum-Walker Field in Fayetteville, Ark. The other two teams in the double-elimination regional event are No. 1 seed Arkansas and North Dakota State. The Bison went 20-32 this season, winning the Summit League title. The Razorbacks (43-13) finished second in the SEC behind Texas. They're rated fifth in the latest Division I baseball rankings and hold the same spot in RPI. Creighton's Bluejays (41-14) are coming off a Big East tournament championship and have won seven games in a row. KU is ranked No. 25 nationally and No. 24 in the RPI. Advertisement Each regional will include four teams playing in a double-elimination format. The regionals will start Friday and Saturday and run through Monday, June 2, with the winners meeting in best-of-three NCAA Super Regionals the following week. Selection of the eight super regional hosts will be announced June 3. 'This is really special,' Fitzgerald said. 'To see the joy they (players) are having and for it to mean so much ... To be a 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament in year three and lead the Big 12 in wins, if someone told me that I would have taken it all day long and more. 'We have an awesome group of human beings in this program that care so much. We'll have a good practice today. They're ready.' Advertisement The coach had no complaints about where KU was sent and the opposition in the Fayetteville regional. 'You look through this tournament,' Fitzgerald said, 'and this is true of the NCAA tournament: There's never a regional where you're like, 'Oh, man, that's an easy one for so-and-so.' They're all tough.' Of KU's first-round foe, he said: 'Creighton has a really good team and is playing really good baseball.'
