Southwest's Diaz and Reagan's Gonzalez are the Dade Boys' Volleyball Players of the Year
The best athletes have that intangible factor, which elevates their team in the toughest of moments.
Some call it the 'clutch gene.'
Juanmarco Diaz has had that for years on Southwest's boys' volleyball team.
And over at Reagan High, they hadn't seen something quite like that in a player until Yeison Gonzalez donned a Bison uniform this season.
The two talented and versatile outside hitters helped their respective teams overcome the odds and secure state runner-up finishes this season.
As such, Diaz and Gonzalez are the Miami Herald's Miami-Dade County Co-Players of the Year.
Diaz won the honor for the third consecutive season as he completed a stellar career, which began his sophomore season when he guided the Eagles to their third state title all-time.
This season with a younger roster overall, Southwest found itself in more of an underdog role for most of its top matches.
But Diaz's efforts throughout the playoffs propelled the Eagles to huge wins including a win over Columbus in the Class 3A regional final.
Unfortunately for Southwest, its bid for redemption fell short in a three-set loss to Winter Park in the state final.
'It was something we expected,' Diaz said. 'We knew Winter Park had much better players than we did and we were really young this season and not expected to make it back. But we pushed through and made it happen.'
Diaz, a 5-11 senior who is signed to play college volleyball at Northern Kentucky, totaled 191 kills, 101 digs and 77 assists. Over his career, Diaz proved himself one of the most versatile and talented players in the state.
'I love that and I take on any challenge and just have to enjoy any experience that comes my way,' said Diaz, who plans to study finance and accounting.
Gonzalez, a 6-2 outside hitter who has signed to play for Barry University, had experience already when it came to leading a young program to the state tournament.
A year after leading Mater Lakes there, Gonzalez took Reagan's program to new heights, leading them to the Class 2A state championship match.
He finished with a staggering 446 kills, 168 digs and 56 aces.
'He's brought so much to our program,' said Reagan assistant coach Joshua Garavito of Gonzalez. 'I'm sure it was a very tough decision for him to transfer over and people were always chirping to him about he had made the wrong decision and stuff like that. But he never let it get to his head and stayed strong throughout the process.'
The Bison advanced to their first state final and went 25-5, proving themselves one of the top teams overall in the state.
The FHSAA expanded boys' volleyball to a three-classification format for the first time this season.
Reagan's run ended with a loss in the 2A final to Winter Park Lake Howell, but beat some of Dade's best teams including two wins over Class 3A state runner-up Southwest and victories over Columbus, Palmetto and Belen Jesuit along the way.
Before this season, the Bison had never advanced past the regional semifinals.
'I love the faculty and staff here, it's been an honor to help this program to success,' Gonzalez said.

Petrovic, Alker and Gonzalez share lead at Firestone in PGA Tour Champions major
AKRON, Ohio — Tim Petrovic shot a 4-under 66 on Friday for a share of second-round lead with Steven Alker and Ricardo Gonzalez in the Kaulig Companies Championship, the third major of the year on the PGA Tour Champions. Petrovic closed with a birdie on the par-4 ninth to match Alker and Gonzalez at 5-under 135 at Firestone South. Alker, from New Zealand, had a 66. Gonzalez, the Argentine player who shared the first-round lead with Soren Kjeldsen, shot 68. Miguel Angel Jimenez was a stroke back after a 66. Freddie Jacobson was 3 under after a 67. Angel Cabrera, who already has won two majors this year at the Regions Tradition and the Senior PGA Championship at Congressional, was 1 under after a 68. The winner of the tournaments gets a spot in The Players Championship at the TPC Sawgrass next year. Firestone South previously hosted the World Series of Golf and then a World Golf Championship. It's a strong test for players who next go to the U.S. Senior Open in Colorado.

2-Time Super Bowl Champ Delivered Truth On 49ers' Trade Addition
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Out West, Bryce Huff is going to get a fresh start in the NFL for the second season in a row. The veteran pass rusher has to be hopeful that this one doesn't spoil as quickly as his last. The Philadelphia Eagles added Huff last year as one of their most notable acquisitions. At the time, Hurff was coming off of a four-year run on the New York Jets. During the 2023 NFL season, Huff appeared in 17 games. He combined 29 tackles, and generated a career-high 10 sacks. In the three seasons before Huff's big campaign, he totaled 7.5 sacks. The Eagles were hopeful the 27-year-old would be a major presence for their defensive front for several seasons. They made a big investment in the young veteran, by putting $51 million on the table for the next three seasons. In the end, Huff would last just one year in Philadelphia. What went wrong for the defensive end in the eyes of a Philadelphia legend? Brandon Graham suggested that difference between the schemes in New York and Philadelphia played a major part in Huff's struggles. "It was just that defense, man," Graham said on the Ross Tucker Podcast. "I know what it's like playing in that 4-3, wide-nine, go get it. Every play, it's always stop the run on the way to the quarterback. That's the slogan in that type of defense. I feel like it's all scheme." Bryce Huff #0 of the Philadelphia Eagles rushes the passer against Terence Steele #78 of the Dallas Cowboys at Lincoln Financial Field on December 29, 2024 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Bryce Huff #0 of the Philadelphia Eagles rushes the passer against Terence Steele #78 of the Dallas Cowboys at Lincoln Financial Field on December 29, 2024 in Philadelphia, not a knock from Graham to Huff. The system is important to any player, whether they are on offense or defense. "I've seen different guys flourish in different systems, and then you see him get in another system, it's different, and what they asked of this year, it just wasn't a great marriage, I would say," Graham added. The Eagles' defense thrived under the veteran defensive coordinator, Vic Fangio. They especially showed out in the Super Bowl, where they bothered Patrick Mahomes to the point where the Chiefs couldn't get anything going on offense until the Eagles eased up late in the game. Unfortunately for Huff, he wasn't really a part of that on the field. In 2024, Huff appeared in 12 games for the Eagles. He finished the year with 13 tackles and 2.5 sacks. The veteran forced one fumble. As the Eagles went on their impressive Super Bowl run, Huff appeared in just two games. He didn't register a single statstic in the postseason. This year, Huff will look to bounce back on the San Francisco 49ers after getting traded. Recency bias doesn't trust his ability to have an impact out West, but Brandon Graham assures NFL fans that Huff can still be very productive in the right system. "I know Huff can rush. I see him doing all that, but sometimes it's just different with the type of scheme and what people ask of you and they want you to be able to do," Graham finished. "...I just know that Huff's a baller, man. And hopefully, for him, I want it to be a win for the team." For more Philadelphia Eagles and NFL news, head over to Newsweek Sports.

Eagles star Nolan Smith makes the expected claim in naming the top state for HS Football
One of the most enjoyable aspects of Howie Roseman's evolution has been watching him learn from the mistakes he made in the past. No one has ever accused the Philadelphia Eagles' general manager of being perfect, but have we seen another GM navigate the NFL's constant changes and do so any better? It's hard to think of one. Maybe you've never thought about the following statement this way. Then again, perhaps you have, but it feels like once Howie discovered the Alabama Crimson Tide and Georgia Bulldogs, things took off. It had been a while since the team plucked talent from two of the SEC's top programs. Advertisement Before drafting Jalen Hurts in 2020 (and both DeVonta Smith and Landon Dickerson in 2021), the Eagles hadn't drafted a former member of The Tide since taking Freddie Milons in 2002. Before this recent and well-publicized run on UGA stars, the franchise hadn't raided the Dawgs since acquiring Brandon Boykin with a fourth-round pick in 2012. Sure, it may have taken a while, but once Howie caught on, the tidal wave began. Everyone is excited about seeing whether or not Nolan Smith can take another step in 2025, but for now, they'll have to settle for watching him on Exciting Mics. Nolan Smith unsurprisingly names Georgia as the best state for football It feels like this is restated every week now, but the 'exciting whites', Reed Blankenship and Cooper DeJean, may have struck gold with their Exciting Mics podcast. At the time of this story's release, they aren't even 20 episodes in, but something is already evident to everyone viewing. The guys have something special here. Advertisement A recent episode features Nolan Smith. Everything was on the table, from the recruiting process and Super Bowl memories to his first impressions and the best football state. No one has to guess what his opinions are on the latter topic, do they? It's an interesting theory. Nolan is one of eight Philly Dawgs on the roster. Jalen Carter, Smael Mondon, Lewis Cine, Kelee Ringo, Jordan Davis, Nakobe Dean, and Azeez Ojulari are the other seven. The Birds are also pretty heavy with talent from South Carolina. K.J. Henry, Jeremiah Trotter Jr., Will Shipley, and Marcus Tate all played for the Clemson Tigers. Advertisement However, it will be interesting to see how The Crimson Tide feels about his Georgia theory, considering Jihaad Campbell, Landon Dickerson, Cameron Latu, Byron Young, Tyler Steen, Eli Ricks, Jalen Hurts, and DeVonta Smith all had their start at Alabama at some point. Don't sleep on Pennsylvania, though, Nolan! That state has some ballers too, but again, we can all see why he'd be partial to Georgia.
