Splitgate 2 Boss Says $80 Skin Bundle 'Slipped Through The Cracks'

1047 studio head Ian Proulx courted controversy at Summer Game Fest last week by taking shots at Call of Duty and wearing a hat with the MAGA-infused slogan 'Make FPS Great Again.' But it was his new multiplayer shooter's eye-popping microtransactions that subsequently turned Splitgate 2 into an online punching bag, and Proulx is now blaming some of those prices on an ex-employee who he says used to work on Call of Duty.
One item in particular, an $80 skin bundle called Nano Swarm, quickly made the rounds. While Proulx talked on stage at Geoff Keighley's showcase about his love of old Halo LAN parties and wanting Titanfall 3, his free-to-play arena shooter was plastered with expensive microtransactions and about to get a new battle royale mode, undercutting his critiques of other modern live-service games like Black Ops 6. A silver-colored portal animation from the Nano Swarm bundle alone was originally priced at $34.
Proulx has been taking the opportunity to keep posting through the controversy over the weekend, including slashing the prices on all cosmetics and releasing short video diaries updating players on the status of 1047's post-launch priorities for Splitgate 2. 'I've had a lot of people ask me, 'How the hell did this happen in the first place, like an $80 bundle, that's not the 1047 way?'' he said. 'I agree and I thought I would just candidly tell you exactly what happened. So I'll start by saying no excuse of course like I should have been on this, we should have been on top of this.
He contionued:
The second I got off that stage I called Derek our lead game designer and I said 'Derek did you know we had an $80 bundle, this is news to me, like what the heck, that makes no sense,' and he didn't. Essentially what happened out former head of monetization who happened to come from call of duty was with us for less than a year and was very aggressive on price.
Actually prior to his departure we actually originally had founders packs for $100 and battle passes for $10 and the first thing Derek and I did when we revaluated everything a month ago was slash those things so founders went from $100 to $60 and we actually added in game currently that the game originally wasn't going to have we decreased the battle pass from $10 to $5 but unfortunately things slipped through the cracks.
In addition to shifting the blame to a past employee and once again trying to beef with Call of Duty, Proulx's explanation doesn't entirely square with the studio's defending of the pricey cosmetics just days prior. 'This pack features our most unique skins with complex animations & artwork,' the official Splitgate 2 account posted back on Friday. 'We have a variety of cheaper options. The game is free to play, & you don't need to buy anything to enjoy it to its fullest. Nothing is pay to win & never will be.'
So did the bundle 'slip through the cracks,' or is 1047 just backtracking now in the face of players revolting against a hostile monetization strategy that violates the 'old school' ethos Splitgate 2 wants to cultivate? People have pointed out on the subreddit that the problem isn't just that the prices started out to high. The shooter's in-game shop is also full of slimy practices like fake inflated discounts and currency mismatches so players always have to overspend to get what they want.
'Honestly, the store and its prices really feel like something out of a gacha game, except for the fact I don't think I know of any gachas that have you preorder [battle] passes,' wrote one player. 'Great gameplay, terrible business model,' wrote another.
Splitgate 2 is currently sitting at mixed reviews on Steam, though Proulx said the free-to-play shooter reached over 2 million players over the weekend. We'll see if the sequel can stick around longer than its predecessor did.

When Musk began publicly disagreeing with Trump over policy and power, the president lashed out. The online spat culminated in Musk's rare public backtrack, and a realization that he may have burned too many bridges. Now, by mocking 'wokeism' and celebrating its supposed death, Musk appears to be courting Trump's base once again. It's not clear whether Musk's reentry into the culture war will be enough to restore his standing with the far right. His fallout with Trump exposed ideological and ego-based rifts that may not be easy to mend. Putin gifts Trump an authoritarian kitsch portrait

If a picture is worth a thousand words, then how much are paintings worth? Surely much more, as they also reveal the artist's intentions and the subject's self-image. A case in point is the painting of President Trump that Vladimir Putin asked Steve Witkoff to give him in April. According to the New York real estate developer-turned-diplomatic globetrotter, it was 'a beautiful portrait,' and Trump was 'clearly touched by it.' The artist is 69-year-old Nikas Safronov, celebrated as a People's Artist of the Russian Federation, Honored Artist of Russia, Academician of the Russian Academy of Fine Arts, Professor of Ulyanovsk State University, honorary citizen of Ulyanovsk and honorary citizen of Baku. Portraits are his specialty. A Russian source says he's known as the 'genius of kitsch,' a 'Russian Casanova' and 'our Salvador Dali.' I don't know about the Casanova bit, but the first and third descriptions apply — only with the qualification that Safronov is an exceedingly poor Dali. Perhaps I'm being too insensitive to Russian artistic tastes, but Safronov's work most closely resembles the kind of paintings one encounters for sale in subway stations or parks: hyper-realistic celebrities with oversized heads and eyes, set against familiar backgrounds with easily recognizable monuments. Like a bad Dali, Safronov is a master of kitsch. This says a lot about both Putin the giver and Trump the receiver. Putin's love of pomp and taste for palatial dwellings suggest he has a soft spot for kitsch. Trump is no less enamored of bad taste, as the interiors of his apartments demonstrate. Putin, in gifting Safronov's portrait, presumably knew that Trump would appreciate it. He knew just how to play him — an unsurprising conclusion given how Putin has played Trump with respect to resolving the Russian war against Ukraine. Let's take a closer look at the portrait itself. It depicts a huge Trump immediately after the failed assassination attempt in Butler, Penn. The top of his right ear is bloodied, a streak of blood extends toward his mouth and his right fist is raised in defiance; his left hand, holding a MAGA cap, is at his side; his eyes peer into the distance. The peering bit is standard for portraits of dictators: whether Mao, Stalin or Hitler, they all look into the joyous future only they can see. But it's the background that makes the portrait an example par excellence of kitsch. For it depicts the Statue of Liberty, right arm raised a la Trump, parts of the New York and New Jersey skyline, and an enormous American flag. The question that an observer might be tempted to ask: So, where exactly is Trump standing in this image? Safronov, the honorary citizen of distant Ulyanovsk and Baku, may be forgiven for his ignorance of New York and New Jersey geography, but Trump could only have been found in this position while standing on the Staten Island ferry as it sails across New York harbor. But why, then, would he be bloodied if he's on a ferry? It is in the nature of kitsch to overdo symbolism and combine things that cannot be combined. But the really weird thing about the painting is the American flag, which, as we all know, consists of 50 stars. Safronov's consists of 45. Is that a sign of innumeracy, or an instance of poetic license? Worse, the flag is depicted backwards: the stars are usually in the upper left-hand corner; in Safronov's version they are in the lower left-hand corner and the flag is pointing downward. Is Safronov sending Trump a political message about America's decline? And has Trump noticed that, through oversight or intent, he and his country have been dissed? Safronov told CNN that 'It was important to me to show the blood, the scar and his bravery during the attempt on his life. He didn't break down or become afraid, but raised his arm to show he is one with America and will bring back what it deserves.' And what, pray tell, does America deserve? Safronov seems to suggest it is Trump. The important point is that the portrait that appeals so much to Trump and Putin is standard authoritarian kitsch. Why dictators have a thing for ridiculous poses in unlikely settings is a topic for another column. But both Trump and Putin fit that mold — which may say something about the uncertain state of democracy in America and its complete absence from Russia. Alexander J. Out of Words features one of the cutest videogame characters I've ever seen, but there's a tinge of Kafkaesque darkness to it, too

After yapping about nothing but videogames for three days at Summer Game Fest, I tried my best to talk about anything else, but I just couldn't stop bringing up Out of Words. It's a sidescrolling tale of young love brought to life by a charming handicraft world and striking stop-motion animation. Being the type of person who's always experimenting with amateur arts and crafts and playing Jim Henson's Labyrinth on repeat must make me the perfect target for this, but the creations here benefit from a team of real artisans. When it launches, you'll be able to play Out of Words with a friend on the couch or connect with them online, regardless of platform. In my demo, I played with game director Johan Oettinger, while game design lead Jeff Sparks joined us for a chat. It's a strictly co-op adventure, and how its protagonists play will change throughout the journey to reflect the emotions and story connecting the kids, Karla and Kurt. An "Alice in Wonderland" moment happens almost immediately, dropping the friends into an unfamiliar and troubled world that hinders their ability to speak. It's also when you meet Aleph—the darling manta-like creature that's a manifestation of their friendship and feelings for each other. The Out of Words duo are cute as a button, but screenshot stills don't do Aleph justice. The bubbly blue baby purrs, coos, and squeaks while twirling about to lighten the mood. It makes perfect sense Aleph is born from good feelings between kind, gentle people. It's gotta be the cutest thing I've ever seen, and it's not just a me thing, either. Characters in later scenes seem drawn to its warmth in a way I suspect will have some special meaning for the big picture. When the demo skips ahead, it takes Kurt, Karla, and the painfully precious Aleph underneath the City of Nouns, aptly named Nounberg. To navigate the dangers of the catacombs, the friends toss Aleph back and forth, juggling its magic to avoid obstacles. The player holding Aleph floats along the ceiling, while the other runs along the ground like normal. Oettinger never dropped me, but I did let him go tumbling once or twice before finding our pace as a team. If you can learn to give up a little control and trust your partner, the mechanic turns into a comfortable dance. It's not difficult, but it's quite satisfying. "There's enough of a challenge to feel like you're overcoming, but we really want to keep it modest," Sparks said. "So that you can play it with your child, a non-gamer partner or parent. Someone who's a little less versed in videogames. We really want to make this as approachable as possible." Despite Kurt and Karla's predicament, the introduction to the catacombs feels surprisingly calm, almost meditative. Character puppets, blades of grass, and books—everything in the world of Vokabulantis is a real object that was made by hand and filled to the brim with tiny details. Set pieces are individually placed, while scenes are lit with actual studio lighting. The whole presentation felt like a diorama I could reach out and touch. It's no small feat, but Oettinger tells me he's been fabricating crafts like these for over twenty years as the founder of his animation studio, WiredFly. Immediately, the studio's approach makes me think of Ghibli, but not in the exclusively cute and cozy way popularly associated with the studio today. Out of Words is dark, beautiful, and comforting. I didn't see anything quite as terrifying as Princess Mononoke's headless Forest Spirit, but I did encounter strange creatures and unease more familiar in films like Spirited Away. Oettinger notes Hayao Miyazaki is among the artists who inspire him, along with Franz Kafka, Michael Ende, and David Bowie. There's a point when Kurt and Karla's own anxieties and miscommunication manifest, and the darker side of those influences emerge. Whatever happens triggers a new low in their friendship, and the two become an abomination of something called Primordial Clay. It's a divine substance that makes up much of the life in the strange world, and seems to sense how the duo feels. I was a little taken aback by how monstrous their insecurities take shape. Karla and Kurt are stuck together, the darling little Aleph sandwiched somewhere in the middle. Their movements no longer complement each other; instead, they move together as a messy, bumbling skull-like creature with two arms—one for each player to control. It destroys pieces of the city as it tears through alleyways and shops, desperate to catch a frightened clay citizen who may have more answers about how to help them find their words again. The rhythm of controlling their embodied ugliness came slower, but I found my groove with time. That's intentional, too. Sparks explained the transition demonstrates "just how dramatic the gameplay changes are between sequences." Out of Words is a coming-of-age story, but the complexities of communication are a lifelong challenge, even in old age. My first trailer impression misread the game, and I assumed the only communication happening would take place through actions, but I was wrong. There's plenty of direct language involved, and it brings the same artistry from the art style to the names of places and people thanks to poet Morten Søndergaard. My only disappointment came when the demo ended—I miss Karla, Kurt, and Aleph already. There's so much craftsmanship in the words, in the interactions, and in the placement of trinkets; it's a real showcase of specialist talent. While my demo experience wasn't very long, only some 40 or so minutes, I can't help but walk away feeling like Out of Words could be one of those games that endears me to the medium all over again.
