Construction begins on £7.9m station footbridge
Construction work have begun on a new £7.9m footbridge which will connect platforms at a railway station.
The bridge over the Midland Mainline at Harlington Station, Bedfordshire, will be completed by next spring and has been designed to last for more than a century, Network Rail said.
It will replace an older bridge which has recently shown signs of corrosion.
Most of the work will happen during the day, but some construction will take place at night in June which may cause disruption to the train timetable, Network Rail added.
Harlington Station has had the same footbridge, with upgrades, since it was opened by the Midland Railway in 1868.
While the footbridge is being replaced, Network Rail said its teams would also deliver "crucial" upgrades to the station, which included works on the platform surfaces and yellow lines.
The lower section of Harlington Station's car park will be closed to accommodate construction facilities during the project.
Shak Munshi, a project manager for Network Rail, said: "This significant investment will provide passengers with a modern, reliable footbridge.
"We apologise for any inconvenience this work may cause to passengers' journeys and are grateful for their patience while this essential upgrade takes place."
Jenny Saunders, the customer services director at Govia Thameslink Railway, said: "Harlington is a busy car park. So to help motorists, anyone with a monthly, quarterly or annual season ticket will be able to use the car parks at Leagrave and Luton stations at no additional cost."

Isle of Wight Festival bus driver escapes fire
A bus used to ferry passengers to and from the Isle of Wight Festival has been destroyed by fire. The driver managed to safely pull over before emergency services were called at 00:40 BST to Newport Road. No-one else had been onboard the bus which had been shuttling people between Cowes ferry terminal and the festival site in Newport. Richard Tyldsley, Southern Vectis general manager, said: "There was no prior warning of any issue, and the driver pulled over immediately and safely." "This type of incident is extremely rare, and we are investigating to establish the cause of the fire. Early indications suggest a mechanical issue," he said. The former Salisbury Reds bus has been retained on the island and is part of the additional fleet used for festival transport each year. "The vehicle has been maintained and was prepared for service by the Southern Vectis team," said Mr Tyldsley. Major Mass Pike traffic delays near Boston anticipated again for 2nd weekend of lane closures
Major traffic delays are anticipated near Boston again this weekend as a second round of lane closures is scheduled to accommodate construction work on the Mass Pike in Newton and Weston, Massachusetts. There will only be one lane open in each direction between exits 123 and 125, near the I-95 interchange. Crews are finishing the demolition of a highway bridge that goes over the MBTA railroad. It's part of a $400 million project to repair of fix eight bridges in the state. MassDOT is once again telling drivers to avoid that part of the Mass Pike all weekend if possible. "Drivers traveling through the affected areas should expect delays, reduce speed, and use caution," the agency said in a statement. It's possible that the delays could extend into the Monday morning commute. Mass Pike traffic Before the first round of construction between May 30 and June 2, highway administrator Jonathan Gulliver warned that there could be delays of up to three hours on the Mass Pike if drivers didn't follow the recommendation to stay away. Typically, that part of the Mass Pike sees about 100,000 cars on an average weekend day. A MassDOT spokesperson that during the first weekend closure, there was a roughly 30% to 36% decrease in traffic volume. Wait times on the Mass Pike peaked at one hour. There will also be impacts felt by MBTA riders. The Commuter Rail on the Framingham/Worcester Line will be shut down between South Station and Framingham to accommodate the work, as will the Amtrak train between Boston and Albany. Shuttle buses will be offered instead during the weekend.

Among those named on the list were three beaches in Sussex. First was Cuckmere Haven, in Seaford. It described it as "one of the wildest beaches on the south coast, with superb views of the Seven Sisters chalk cliffs". This beach has a 4.7/5 rating on Tripadvisor from more than 200 reviews, with one saying: "The cliffs are blindingly white and the beach and surrounding countryside is so pretty". Also making the list was West Wittering beach. This is a hugely popular spot for locals and travellers alike, with CNT saying it "draws a crowd from all over the south coast". "There's a grassy patch ideal for picnics behind the beach huts that fringe the beach." West Wittering is rated 4.1/5 on Tripadvisor, but has received more than 1,400 reviews, proving its popularity. The final beach making the list was Seven Sisters, which is home to a number of beaches, including Cuckmere Haven, as mentioned previously. Seven Sisters is known for its tough walking routes, providing some of the best views along the coast of the famous white chalk cliffs. There is a beach in front of the cliffs to explore, which is another great option for hikers or day-trippers looking for somewhere to cool off. On Tripadvisor, there are a number of other beaches in Sussex that are also highly rated. In East Sussex, these include Camber Sands, Brighton, Bexhill, Winchelsea and Pevensey Bay.
