Luton Airport expansion 'an once-in-a-generation opportunity'

The number of passengers flying in and out of London Luton Airport (LLA) is expected to rise to 32 million per year by 2043 after the government approved its Universal planning to building its first theme park in Europe close to Bedford, many tourists are expected to use the airport, currently the UK's fifth-busiest, bringing a possible double economic boom to Bedfordshire. Lord John Hutton, the Labour peer and former MP, has been appointed as the chairman of LLA's board to oversee the next phase of the airport's development and said he "wants to get the airport expanded".He added: "We've got a unique once-in-a-generation opportunity to do something really significant for the local economy; we can put hundreds of millions of pounds into the Bedfordshire economy and the surrounding areas." The airport is owned by Luton Borough Council, through economic development company Luton Rising, but is operated by LLA, a separate partnership between "private and public is its biggest strength", Hutton said. "The income from Luton Airport provides a third of Luton Council's budget and is enabling Luton Council to really focus on some of the very significant economic and social challenges that they're facing in the town," he added."So it's a win-win if we do this."Hutton said the development consent order, which the government gave in April, "paves the way for the other really exciting developments that are taking place in the local economy, particularly the development of Universal Studios". He continued: "I see the two projects closely linked - Luton Airport can play a significant role in accommodating the visitors and getting them in and out in the best way." He said it would mean the airport and Universal sitting down together to work out a "masterplan"."We've got to seize the opportunity with both hands because they don't come around very often - I think most people around the country would give their eye teeth to have projects like this side by side," he said that following the closure of Luton's Vauxhall plant in March, with the loss of about 1,200 jobs, "this is a major, major opportunity to make good the loss that we've already sustained and actually build on it".The airport's annual passenger capacity currently stands at 19 million, and about 14,000 people are employed in and around the expansion went ahead, 11,000 new jobs could be created, said Paul Kehoe, independent chair of Luton Rising. However, not everyone approves of the expansion. Campaign group Luton and District Association for the Control of Aircraft Noise (Ladacan) has begun the first steps of legal action against the said the government ignored the concerns of local people, and the plans were granted Lambourne, its chairman, alleged that Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander ignored a recommendation by planning inspectors to reject the expansion plan due to environmental concerns."The impact on people's health, through noise, especially at night, and the added congestion on road and rail service would be problematic," he said."The extra traffic visiting the theme park and travelling to and from the airport will further compound the problems on the M1. It's in the wrong place for massive further expansion. "It's notorious for any airport expansion to overstate the claimed economic benefits without having regard to the economic costs."Last month, a Department for Transport spokesperson said it was unable to comment on this claim due to "ongoing legal proceedings".Alexander said expansion would "deliver significant economic benefits", which was "a key reason for my decision". Hutton said growth in passenger numbers was inevitable but that the airport should be trying to accommodate it in the least polluting way and using the quietest aircraft it could."The government has set some very rigorous environmental standards, both on pollution and noise, and, crucially, using public transport to access the airport," he said."We can't do the expansion unless we tick the box against all of those conditions. "The exam question that we've been set is 'Can we do this in an environmentally sustainable way?'"We believe we can, and the benefits of that will be significant both nationally for the UK economy: nearly £1.5bn. "I want people to think about the jobs, the economic growth, the prospects, the careers for generations of young people."I'm sure we can rise to this challenge." Look-alike Shefford dad mistaken for hip-hop star Pitbull

A father-of-four who was mistaken for the rapper and singer Pitbull and mobbed by fans at one of his concerts says the whole experience has been "crazy". Phil Mansford, 49, from Shefford, Bedfordshire, decided to go a gig at the O2 Arena in London dressed as the Latin hip-hop star in a "standard suit" - with shades on. It has become a custom to dress like the star, donning his trademark glasses, shirts and jackets - and a bald Mansford said his wife had "stuck a bit of mascara" on his greying beard, before fans began "screaming and shouting and running towards me", believing he was the star. His wife Nicole took a video of the fans' reactions, sent it to their daughter Niamh, who posted it on TikTok. The reel has had more than 3.8 million views and has been shared more than 55,000 times. "I had no idea it was going to blow up like that, it's crazy," Mr Mansford added that he was wearing "just a standard suit with shades", but due to being "follically challenged", no bald cap was a bit of fun, he added, "my wife just stuck a bit of mascara on my little beard, to make it darker, as I'm going grey. "I had no idea it was a cult following [to dress like Pitbull]." Mr Mansford said people started to notice the similarities when he was on the train heading to the concert. "As we got closer to the O2 a few more people started shouting at me," he said. "I was sticking my thumbs up, I was loving the attention, and my wife was rolling her eyes. "As we got inside, people were dancing and getting in the vibe, someone must have said 'that's him'." "The next thing - it went mad, everyone was screaming, shouting and running towards me", he said. "I was with my mate Mike [Metrovich], he's an absolute diamond, and he's a personal trainer, so he looks the part and he pretended to be my bodyguard pushing people out the way and saying, 'no, no, no, move back'."He said although he is not a massive fan of the Fireball singer, the concert was "absolutely brilliant, top drawer". Mr Mansford, the manager of a day centre for adults with learning disabilities, said he just "milked the moment for all he could" and the whole experience had been "amazing". Met Police ‘bravest officer' award winner suspended over alleged sexual assault

A policeman once named the bravest officer in England and Wales has been charged with sexual assault. Sgt Stephen Brown has been suspended by the Metropolitan Police following the alleged incident at Biggleswade railway station in Bedfordshire in November 2019. The 47-year-old, who is reportedly a counter-terrorist specialist firearms officer, will appear at St Albans Crown Court on Sept 1. In 2014, he won a national Police Bravery Award for tackling and disarming a man wielding a samurai sword in north London. Sgt Brown stepped in to stop the man on Christmas Eve 2012, who had stabbed a woman earlier that evening. The attacker repeatedly swung the sword at his face and neck. The Met officer discharged his CS spray into the man's face, before quickly moving towards him and striking his arm with a baton three times while the sword was raised in the air. The man was forced to drop his weapon, with Sgt Brown immediately jumping on top of him to restrain him. The offender continued to struggle violently before backup officers arrived and he was arrested. Officers later discovered the bag he was carrying contained an arsenal of weapons. Not guilty plea Sgt Brown was presented with the bravery award, which is given annually to officers who demonstrate acts of heroism in the course of their duty, by Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe, the then commissioner of the Met Police, at a ceremony in London. Theresa May, the then home secretary, said: 'The actions of Sgt Stephen Brown are a powerful reminder of the commitment and courage that police officers bring to their role. 'Sgt Brown put his own life in danger to defuse a terrifying situation. His intervention protected the public and may well have saved the lives of others.' Sgt Brown, from Bedfordshire, appeared at Stevenage magistrates' court in November, when he entered a plea of not guilty to sexual assault. A Met Police spokesman said: 'We are aware that a serving Met officer has been charged with sexual assault following an alleged incident in November 2019. 'He is currently suspended.'

EXCLUSIVE The 'Farminator' who rounds up illegal migrants: Farmer reveals he dealt with 5,000 stowaways on his land and says Keir Starmer 'treats them like royalty'

A father-of-four dubbed 'the Farminator' for rounding up 50 migrants hiding in his fields every week has hit out at Keir Starmer, claiming the PM 'treats them like royalty'. Chris Gadsden, 70, hit the headlines ten years ago as he collared hundreds of suspected stowaways sneaking into his fields in Bedfordshire. The groups of men had crossed into his farm after being dropped off at the nearby M1 services, following a 125-mile journey from the Dover ferry hidden inside lorries. Chris, who has run the farm for 38 years alongside his wife Lianne, 67, has even found an encampment in the woods close to his home – complete with water bottles and food wrappers showing people had been living there. He says as many as 10 still trespass across his farm every week - equivalent to 5,000 over the past decade. He believes the number is now decreasing because they have found an 'easier' route to get to the UK. Chris told MailOnline: 'They've found another way in where they seem to be more welcomed. They're taking the easy route, coming over on the boats. 'Coming in on boats they are given high vis, taken off to where they need to go, treated like royalty above our own people. 'The country needs someone that actually does something to deter them from coming over, because at the minute it's a free-for-all. 'I'd like to go down to the Houses of Parliament and say my piece there. I would sit there and I'd tell them: 'Face up to reality.' Chris' farm has been a migrant hotbed for more than three decades. He was first alerted to it by police knocking on his door wanting to conduct a survey. On Monday this week, 228 people in four boats successfully made the perilous crossing across the world's busiest shipping lane. The day after a further 489 people in eight boats arrived - pushing the yearly total over 17,000. Photos of migrants on his farm show them trekking through his crops and sheltering from the sun under a bush, while groups of men laugh as they are confronted. In others, a police dog jumps up as cops collar a suspect, while a migrant grins at the camera and offers a cheeky thumbs up from the back of a lorry. Chris now says he is scared for his safety as he nears old age – and the migrants keep on coming. He told MailOnline: 'There are still immigrants coming off. Ten years ago I was younger – now, I don't walk it as far so I don't survey it as much. But they are still coming in. 'It got worse and worse and worse to the extent where it was invading our privacy and our way of life. 'But for me to go out there and look for them now is a bit of a task now. If I jumped on the quad and went around the fields and had a good look, I'd probably find clothes. 'One of my sons, in the second wood around the back, when he walked around it, found an encampment inside. There were bottles of water and that sort of stuff there. 'I feel more threatened now because my abilities are more limited. But don't get me wrong, I wouldn't run. That's a sure fact.' Chris, despite living 125 miles from Dover, has even been forced to brandish a shotgun and shoot into the air after he was confronted with a group of migrants outside his door. Toddington Services is often one of the first stops for lorry drivers coming from the Port of Dover. When he escorted immigrants back to his house, Chris said he would give them food and water as they waited for the authorities. Chris continued: 'I was tolerating them for years, until one day my missus took the dog for a walk down the lane. I was back working on the tractor when she rang me up and said: 'You'd better get round here quick.' 'I went round to the bottom gate and three blokes ran from where she was, and then I ran up the side of the field and stopped all the others. 'That's when it really kicked off. It felt that this was becoming a real threat. They jumped out of lorries and their first stop was the farm, hiding in the barns. 'We did feel threatened at one time. One day I saw lights at our bottom gate. I put the cameras on and there was one minibus parked on the drive, two minibuses down here. A group of men wait for the police in Chris' office. When he escorted immigrants back to his house, Chris said he gave them food and water as they waited for the authorities 'There were all these men blokes who couldn't talk English and they started marching up towards the house – not being funny, I had to put one out. I shot back up into the house and got the shotgun out, came out and let one off in the air. 'My wife was on the phone to the police – they didn't like that I had let a shot off but that was a big threat.' He continued: 'We were breaking the chain from them coming in to where they were trying to go. There used to be a white transit van that would come over and pick them up. 'They'd have a phone number written in on their hand and as soon as they got over here they just rang it.' Chris says that all but one of the migrants he has seen are young men. It comes after Darren Jones, Chief Secretary to the Treasury, sparked fury when he claimed 'the majority of the people in these boats are children, babies and women' – something Chris dismissed as 'not true'. He continued: 'There was only one time that a woman was in the same vicinity, when Somalians came over. Other than that it's all been men. Only men.

Meanwhile, India might soon see its first Tesla drives, as facelifted Model Y test mules were recently spotted near Mumbai – Pune, possibly confirming imminent homologation. 3. Ford – Leveraging Legacy in an EV Future Ford is reviving legend and expanding its EV reach. Europe will see the Capri EV, an electric SUV inspired by its iconic sports car. It offers 627 km range, rapid charging (10–80% in 26 min), and high-end cabin/refinement—all for about €40,300. Ford is also producing the Explorer EV—a compact crossover built on VW's MEB platform and assembled in Cologne, Germany. Since June 2024, orders have been open in Europe, offering RWD and AWD configurations with up to ~522 km WLTP range and 170 kW fast charging. On the internal combustion front, the new fifth‑gen Ford Expedition debuted in October 2024. It introduces the innovative 'Split Gate' tailgate and trims refresh, replacing Timberline with a 'Tremor' off‑road variant. 4. Jeep – Blending Heritage with Electrification Jeep continues to merge off‑road roots with electrification: In India, Jeep launched the limited-run Grand Cherokee Signature Edition priced at ~₹69 lakh (ex‑showroom), featuring exclusive visual upgrades to entice premium buyers. In the U.S., the Wrangler 4xe Willys '41 plug-in hybrid brings a retro military-style theme—a nod to the 1941 Willys MB—with 375 hp and ~21 mi of electric range, listed around $59,930 (plus freight). On the electrified off‑road front, Jeep's all-new Recon EV, a Wrangler-like battery-electric mid‑size SUV, is now in production in Mexico and rolling out globally starting 2025. 5. Hyundai – Software Upgrades and Kona EV Enhancements While inventory moves are quiet in public headlines, Hyundai has been quietly upgrading its Kona EV fleet: European Kona EV owners report faster charging due to enhanced battery cooling logic, improving charging current from 230 A to 260 A and shaving around 3 minutes off charging sessions. Navigation systems received EU-mandated speed-limit assist, better speech recognition, and SoundCloud integration—highlighting Hyundai's investment in over-the-air improvements This report is also available in the following languages : Japanese (スポーツユーティリティビークル(SUV)市場), Korean (스포츠 유틸리티 차량(SUV) 시장), Chinese (运动型多用途车(SUV)市场), French (Marché des véhicules utilitaires sport (VUS)), German (Markt für Sport Utility Vehicles (SUV)), and Italian (Mercato dei veicoli utilitari sportivi (SUV)), etc. Request Sample Pages: More Research Finding – Off-road SUV Market The global off-road SUV market is valued at approximately $54 billion in 2024 and is projected to reach around $85 billion by 2034, reflecting robust growth driven by increasing consumer interest in adventure and outdoor activities.
