One Killed, Four Others Injured As Two MPVs Collide Head On

IPOH, May 30 (Bernama) -- One person died and four others were seriously injured in a head on collision involving two multi-purpose vehicles (MPVs) at Kilometer 1.8 Gerik-Kupang-Gerik, today.
Acting Gerik District Police Chief DSP Muhammad Firdaus Abdullah said his department received information regarding the incident at about 11:45 am.
He said the accident occurred after a Nissan Grand Livina MPV, driven by a 49-year-old man carrying a 56-year-old woman and two male passengers aged 14 and 21, travelling from Kupang towards Gerik, lost control and entered the opposite lane.
'The vehicle then collided with a Perodua Alza MPV driven by a 32-year-old man with his 32-year-old wife and their two children, aged 3 and 5 respectively.
'The driver of the Nissan Grand Livina was found to be seriously injured and was confirmed dead at the Gerik Hospital, while the woman in the same car suffered broken ribs and was referred to the Taiping Hospital. The two other men in that vehicle did not suffer any injuries,' he said in a statement today.
Muhammad Firdaus said the driver of the Perodua Alza MPV was also seriously injured and is being treated at the Taiping Hospital, while his two children sustained injuries to their eyes and head and are being treated at Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital, Ipoh.
'The Perodua Alza driver's wife did not suffer any injuries, and the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987,' he said.

Pahang cops to set up anti-cable theft task force at ECRL sites

MRL had expressed concern following reports of cable theft at certain locations along the ECRL alignment, spanning Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang and Selangor. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Pahang police will establish a task force to prevent theft at the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) project sites in Kuantan. Pahang police chief Yahaya Othman said police had received 10 reports related to theft at the project's construction locations since last month, with estimated losses reaching RM200,000. He said cases involving theft of cables and iron had been reported along the ECRL project route in Cherating, Gebeng and Gambang, but no arrests had been made so far. 'We are still tracking down the individuals involved, and strict action will be taken against them according to legal provisions,' Bernama quoted him as saying. Those involved in cable theft may be prosecuted under Section 431A of the Penal Code for mischief by damaging cables, punishable by two years' imprisonment, a fine, or both, upon conviction. Yahaya said police had suggested that the project management acquire the services of auxiliary police to curb such thefts. 'We are ready to cooperate with Malaysia Rail Link Sdn Bhd in addressing this issue. 'The public is also urged to report to police if they have information about any party trying to sell cables or other construction materials,' he said. He also warned the public not to buy stolen goods as it was an offence punishable under Section 411 of the Penal Code with up to five years' imprisonment, a fine,or both, if convicted. Earlier today, transport minister Loke Siew Fook said police must take firm action against cable thefts at ECRL project sites as this could disrupt the smooth progress and implementation of the project. Mother seeks prayers for injured UPSI student Nur Erika

JERTIH: The mother of Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) student Nur Erika Alisya Mohd Zaidi, who was seriously injured in the tragic road accident on the East-West Highway in Gerik, Perak on June 9, has called on the public to pray for her daughter's speedy recovery. Noorzailizan Zakaria@ Ariffin, 41, said her daughter, who sustained injuries to both hands and her neck, could only lie in bed at the Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital (HSNZ) in Kuala Terengganu after being flown from the Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital in Ipoh, Perak, via the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department helicopter on Saturday (June 21). 'She's in stable condition and has shown positive development, but she needs help with her movements because she can't move her hands properly due to the many fractures sustained. 'Nur Erika Alisya's right hand has had rods inserted into her shoulder, elbow and wrist as well as into the elbow and wrist of her left hand. She also has to wear a neck brace due to a fracture,' she said when contacted by Bernama today. The housewife, who lives in Kampung Alor Keladi in Hulu Besut near here, said that she and her 45-year-old husband, who works as an assistant handyman, currently take turns to care for the eldest of three siblings. In the early morning incident on June 9, 15 UPSI students died when a bus specially rented from Jertih to return to the university's main campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak, overturned after being involved in an accident with a Perodua Alza on the highway. The accident also resulted in 33 others being injured, including the bus driver and co-driver, as well as the driver and three passengers of the multi-purpose vehicle (MPV).
