Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie launches Lurie Autism Institute in Philadelphia
Philadelphia Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie is donating $50 million to the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and Penn Medicine to create a joint initiative of autism spectrum disorder research, the three parties announced Tuesday, June 10.
According to a press release, the $50 million gift that will launch the Lurie Autism Institute (LAI) is "the largest single donation to U.S. academic medical centers focused on autism research across the lifespan."
The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), perhaps obviously, focuses its efforts in autism research with children, while Penn largely works with the adult community.
One of LAI's main goals is to combine the work of CHOP and Penn and aid researchers in painting a broader picture of autism's effects over a lifetime. As LAI Interim Director Dr. Dan Rader put it, the work they do will help researchers "better understand the condition, the heterogeneity, and how we can actually ultimately use the research to make a difference in their lives."
In addition, the new institute and its funding will aim to incentivize other doctors and researchers — those not currently working on autism-related work — to join in supporting the work of CHOP and Penn Medicine. To that end, LAI will launch a certificate program from PhD trainees and postdocs called the "Next-Generation Program in Autism Bioscience," the press release said.
"This is a time when we've seen so many advances in neuroscience, genetics, imaging, molecular pathways, processes and artificial intelligence," Lurie told USA TODAY in an exclusive interview. "It's opening up an entirely new world of possibilities for autism research."
Both Rader and Lurie emphasized that a big part of LAI's work will be determining how translational therapeutics might be effective in treating individuals on the spectrum, in part with the aid of the latest in artificial intelligence.
In other words, LAI's efforts will consist of collecting data from existing and ongoing research and then, using new technology and AI, figuring out how that data can be translated into a form of treatment. That treatment, according to Lurie, could consist of repurposing certain drugs or gene editing.
"The complex part of autism is there's no single gene, there's no single reason," Lurie said. "So it's very research-based in order to get to the therapeutics."
As LAI focuses largely on research, the clinical efforts at CHOP and Penn will continue and "likely expand" in the wake of LAI's launch, Rader said. Then, as those two organizations diagnose and work with more individuals on the spectrum, they could "recruit" those individuals as "partners in the research to better understand this complex condition."
In addition, Lurie said one of the main visions he has for LAI is to become a "catalyst" for more worldwide funding and research to tackle the complexities of understanding autism.
As part of those efforts, the institute will host an annual international symposium and award a prize for autism research, according to the press release.
Lurie and his family are not newcomers to advocating for autism research and awareness.
'My brother is autistic. So for my family and me, we've been supporting the autism community for ... decades," Lurie said. "That's really where it all originated from.
"My mother has really led the way over all these decades as the primary investor in autism research, and the rest of the family has followed suit. What I've done is just re-emphasize that over the decades, over the years."
Lurie's mother, Nancy Lurie Marks, founded the Nancy Lurie Marks Family Foundation (NLMFF) in 1977 to aid individuals with autism. In 2009, the NLMFF established the Lurie Center for Autism at Massachusetts General Hospital.
In 2018, Jeffrey Lurie started the Eagles Autism Foundation. And in 2019, the Eagles, the NFL team Lurie has owned since 1994, opened the NFL's first in-stadium sensory room, "a dedicated space designed by medical professionals for those who may need a quieter and more secure environment," according to the team's official website.
"And wherever we go, whether it's Brazil or the Super Bowl, we bring it along with us," Lurie said. "And (sensory-inclusive efforts have) become adopted by so many sports teams. It's gratifying."
Indeed, many sports teams across various leagues — MLB, MLS, the NBA and the NHL — have adopted similar sensory rooms and other tools. The Buffalo Bills, for example, offer sensory inclusion kits that include things like noise-canceling headphones and fidget toys to help make their games and events more inclusive to their neurodiverse fans.
Said Lurie: "I've always grown up in an atmosphere of acceptance and inclusivity, so when we have done things with the Eagles like we do with different organizations ... we want to try to create inclusive atmospheres for autistic people no matter if they're young or old."
The topic of autism research on a national level has gained steam in recent months. That has been inspired in part by U.S. health secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. — who in the past has promoted scientifically discredited theories that autism is linked to childhood vaccines — declaring in April that the U.S. will find the cause of autism by September.
As part of those efforts, Kennedy announced "a massive testing and research effort" that will "involve hundreds of scientists from around the world."
An HHS official told USA TODAY in late April that the National Institutes of Health (NIH) is using $50 million to invest in autism research. Other efforts headed by NIH — namely launching a real-world data platform using public data from federal agencies and data collected from private sector sources like smart watches and fitness trackers — and lack of clarity surrounding those efforts have resulted in heightened privacy concerns.
"The use of registries and registry data in general can be a valuable tool in helping to understand the causes of diseases and disorders, but in this case, the lack of clarity around how data will be collected, shared, maintained and tested for accuracy raises red flags," a statement from the Autism Science Foundation read.
Despite the relevant timing, the launch of the LAI is not an event that is happening in response to Kennedy and the HHS's recent initiative, Lurie clarified.
"This notion of merging CHOP and Penn — I've been looking for where to do this for about three years," he said.
"It just came to be probably about two years ago, and we've been talking ever since of how to make this great. So, no, it had nothing to do with anything else but trying to impact the lives of those with autism with all these new technologies and discoveries as best as possible."
That doesn't take away from the significance of the timing, says Rader.
"There's a lot of confusion right now about what are the causes of autism, what should we be doing about it, how might we better prevent it," he said. "It's more important than ever to bring this information together in a synthetic way that allows us to really better understand this complex condition.
"So, I think, yes, the rationale for this got even greater over the last few months."

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has tasked his newly appointed panel of vaccine advisers with probing an ingredient long-targeted by anti-vaxxers for disproven links to autism. The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), a panel under the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, will discuss the vaccine preservative thimerosal in its June 26 meeting, according to a draft agenda. The advisory committee previously had 17 members who were all sacked by Kennedy earlier this month and replaced with eight new ones, including anti-vaccine voices like Dr. Robert Malone, who pushed COVID-19 conspiracies in a 2021 episode of The Joe Rogan Experience. Thimerosal, a preservative that is used to prevent microbial growth in vaccines, has long been targeted by anti-vaccine activists because it contains mercury. Kennedy himself authored a book in 2014 that advocated for the removal of thimerosal from vaccines, erroneously linking it to autism. Kennedy claimed that thimerosal is 'immensely toxic to brain tissue,' but multiple peer-reviewed studies, as well as health agencies like the CDC and Food and Drug Administration, have long maintained there is no link between the ingredient and autism. 'Many well-conducted studies have concluded that thimerosal in vaccines does not contribute to the development of autism,' the CDC says on its website. 'Even after thimerosal was removed from almost all childhood vaccines, autism rates continued to increase, which is the opposite of what would be expected if thimerosal caused autism.' The FDA similarly stated that 'scientific studies of the risk of other serious neurodevelopmental disorders have failed to support a causal link with thimerosal.' As a precautionary measure, however, the FDA in 1999 recommended the removal of thimerosal from vaccines routinely given to infants. The use of the ingredient has also dropped sharply over the years as many vaccines were reformulated to single-dose packaging. Jeremy Faust, editor-in-chief of MedPage Today, warned in an op-ed that the anti-vaccine movement will take the inclusion of thimerosal in the vaccine panel's agenda as 'a major win.' 'To be clear, removing the compound will do nothing to improve vaccine safety, but it certainly will undermine confidence in other existing vaccines,' he wrote. 'While there are many alternatives for influenza vaccines that do not contain thimerosal, elevating this debunked myth to national policy lends credence to misinformation, and sets the stage for other actions that may undermine vaccine confidence in the United States.' Last month, Kennedy removed COVID-19 vaccines from the list of shots recommended for children and pregnant women. Dr. Fiona Havers, a physician who oversaw respiratory virus data—including hospitalization rates for COVID-19—resigned as a top vaccine specialist for the CDC on Monday in the wake of Kennedy's controversial overhaul of the agency. 'If it isn't stopped, and some of this isn't reversed, like, immediately, a lot of Americans are going to die as a result of vaccine-preventable diseases,' she said in an interview with The New York Times.

Why Autism Diagnoses Are Increasing: What Changed In 2013
Changes in diagnostic criteria drove an increase in autism diagnoses. Autism has been in the spotlight as more public figures react to rising diagnosis rates. Some frame it as an epidemic, prompting speculation about causes. But what many don't realize is that much of the increase can be traced to two major changes in how autism is diagnosed. Starting in 2013, people already diagnosed with ADHD could now also be diagnosed with autism, something that was not allowed previously. Further, doctors were now encouraged to consider a person's internal distress, not just observable externals, when determining whether their autistic experience qualified for diagnosis. These two changes account for a significant portion of the increase in autism diagnoses. To receive a mental health diagnosis, a person must show evidence of impairment. For autism, this means behaviors associated with a differently wired brain must cause real life challenges--not just exist. But how do we define impairment? During my medical training, that was a determination for the professionals to make. These standards were defined in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, Fourth Edition, the manual doctors used to determine mental health diagnoses. Originally published in 1994, the DSM-IV defined a mental disorder as causing 'clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning.' In the DSM-IV, impairment was assessed by external signs such as poor grades, job loss, or visible dysfunction. Internal distress, like working twice as hard as other just to keep up, was not considered. It was left to the doctor to determine what elements of a patient's story were 'clinically significant' and whether they were in 'important' areas of functioning. If someone had autistic features but excelled in school or work and had relationships, they might be told they weren't impaired and did not meet criteria for a diagnosis. Their internal experience--how hard things felt or the emotional toll it took--wasn't relevant. That changed in 2013 with the publication of the DSM-V, which heralded a critical shift in psychiatry: valuing a patient's internal experiences over mere appearances. While the fundamental definition of mental disorder remained the same, the DSM-V considered a person's internal suffering when evaluating them for clinically significant distress. For example, in the past a student would have to be failing classes to be considered impaired. But after DSM-V, a student getting As only through intense effort and personal cost--exhaustion, anxiety, and emotional burnout--could also be understood as experiencing impairment. This change meant that people who previously would have been dismissed now had their experiences validated. Jaimie Goralnick, MD, a child and adult psychiatrist in California recalls what it was like to consider autism prior to 2013. 'In my training, I was taught only to notice the people who fit a stereotypical image of what we think autism is, and that is only a small percentage of people who are autistic.' Today, fewer people are denied a diagnosis because they make eye contact or have friends. Clinicians are learning to ask deeper questions: Is that eye contact forced and exhausting? Have they faced lifelong bullying or exclusion, even though they also have friendships? This has been particularly important in recognizing women with autism, who often present more subtly. The second major change in DSM-V was the removal of the exclusion rule that prevented someone from being diagnosed with both ADHD and autism. Before 2013, meeting criteria for one ruled out the other. Since ADHD symptoms are often more visible, this led to many people's autism being missed. 'In my practice, there are many people who have been diagnosed with ADHD, and later realized they also are autistic,' says Dr. Goralnick. 'It's been life changing for them to be able to make sense of their experience in a clearer and more positive way." Currently, the scientific literature estimates that between 50 to 70% of people with autism also have ADHD. (Hours 2022) The reverse is harder to measure due to under-diagnosis, but studies have found that between 30 to 65% of children with ADHD also show clinically significant autistic traits. (Clark 1999, Ronald 2008, Sokolova 2017). This means that a significant number of people with ADHD are now also diagnosed with autism, leading to an apparent boost in autism numbers. With autism in the press so often lately, it is important to understand that while diagnosis rates have risen, autism itself has always been with us. The 2013 changes in the DSM allowed us to get better at recognizing it. And that's vital, because it gives people a chance to understand themselves, heal from rejections they've faced, connect with the autistic community and access therapies designed for autism. "Many of my patients are able to figure out ways to fit in and fly under the radar with some of their challenges,' Dr. Goralnick. 'They struggle a lot with depression and severe anxiety that just never quite responded to treatments, and there were a lot of things that just never made sense. But once we together realized they were autistic, the pieces came together and we began to understand their experience.' Autism wasn't invisible because it wasn't there. It was invisible because we weren't looking for it in the right way.
