US Zyn boom pushed Philip Morris stock to a record. Wall Street still sees 'impressive growth' ahead.
Philip Morris International (PM) is riding the wave of smoke-free nicotine products with Zyn.
The category has grown so much that convenience stores like Casey's (CASY) and Murphy USA (MUSA) have changed their shelves to cater to consumers looking for tobacco alternatives to satisfy their nicotine fix.
"This is a multiyear growth story ... and there's a lot of potential there," CFRA analyst Garrett Nelson said in an interview. Zyn, which produces nicotine pouches without tobacco, was part of Philip Morris' acquisition of Swedish Match in late 2022. Zyn gained so much popularity in the US that it's facing a shortage that started in April 2024. The shortage will be over in the third quarter, the company said.
"They are still a market share leader," Needham analyst Gerald Pascarelli said in an interview. "They've been capacity constrained because they were growing so rapidly ... they simply couldn't service the amount of demand."
Shipment volumes of the product to the US increased from 132 million cans in Q1 2024 to 202 million in Q1 2025. Earlier this year, the FDA approved authorization to market 20 pouches per can under regulations that, among other things, would ensure that ads are targeted to adults ages 21 and older. Currently, nicotine merchants can sell 15 per can, with each individual pouch weighing 0.4 grams. (The total weight of the can is 6 grams.)
Philip Morris' smoke-free business also includes heated tobacco products like IQOS and e-vapor products like Veev. In the most recent first quarter, it accounted for 42% of total net revenue.
On June 13, Philip Morris International stock hit an all-time high record close of $184.33. Shares are up nearly 80% from a year ago. That's far more than what Nelson calls its "closest" competitor, Altria (MO), up more than 30%, which produces the brand called On! Nicotine Pouches.
In the same period, the S&P 500 (^GSPC) was up roughly 11%.
Philip Morris International's net revenue grew 5.8% in the first quarter to $9.3 billion. Smoke-free products like Zyn grew 15% to $3.9 billion; "combustibles," like cigarettes, showed flat growth at $5.4 billion. Gross profit grew 11.8% in the quarter to $6.3 billion overall, with smoke-free products specifically posting a 27.7% surge in gross profit to $2.7 billion.
CFO Emmanuel Babeau told investors its gross profit was "fueled by the rapid growth of Zyn."
In the US, the shipment volume of oral smoke-free products in pouches or pouch equivalents increased by 27.2%. Outside of the US, nicotine pouch volume also grew by 53% in emerging markets like South Africa and Europe, among others.
"Nicotine pouches are relatively lightweight. You can ship a ton," Pascarelli said, adding that they are low-cost to make.
The economy — boom, bust, or somewhere in between — won't be an issue, analysts said.
"When you have a product that people like and is addictive ... consumers are willing to pay a premium," Nelson said. "Tobacco companies [are] being able to push through price increases very easily."
One yellow flag: Is this the next Juul? "There was a ton of people underage that were vaping," Pascarelli said. That drew scrutiny from regulators because the products were flavored, which attracted younger users.
Zyn uses flavors like wintergreen that are supposedly less ominous. "They're not these novel flavors (like mango) that really took off with the vapers" who skewed younger, he said.
Convenience chains are benefiting too. Casey's General Stores CEO Darren Rebelez said he swapped out cigarettes with Zyn, moving them front and center in displays. Growth of the nicotine pouch business has doubled around 200% in the past two years and 54% in the last year alone.
"It's growing a lot, and some of that is what our merchants have done to give it more exposure and to reset it ... we've helped to accelerate that," Rebelez said in an interview, adding that the "decline in cigarettes is real" as consumers experiment with other products.
Earlier this year, convenience store 7-Eleven president Stan Reynolds told investors the company "made strategic investments" in expanding its tobacco offerings as "53% of adult smokers are looking to switch from cigarettes to noncombustible products."
Once 7-Eleven made the switch, Reynolds said it has seen sales increase in the category. It's also making up half the loss in sales from the decline in cigarettes and is benefiting from higher margins.
Per Philip Morris International, from 2012 to 2024, its cigarette shipment volume fell from 927 billion units to 617 billion units.

Investors brace for oil price spike, rush to havens after US bombs Iran nuclear sites
NEW YORK - A U.S. attack on Iranian nuclear sites on Saturday could lead to a knee-jerk reaction in global markets when they reopen, sending oil prices higher and triggering a rush to safety, investors said, as they assessed how the latest escalation of tensions would ripple through the global economy. The attack, which was announced by President Donald Trump on social media site Truth Social, deepens U.S. involvement in the Middle East conflict. That was the question going into the weekend, when investors were mulling a host of different market scenarios. In the immediate aftermath of the announcement, they expected the U.S. involvement was likely to cause a selloff in equities and a possible bid for the dollar and other safe-haven assets when trading begins, but also said much uncertainty about the course of the conflict remained. Updates: U.S. hits Iran nuclear facilities, braces for counterattack While Trump called the attack "successful", few details were known. He was expected to address the nation later on Saturday. "I think the markets are going to be initially alarmed, and I think oil will open higher," said Mark Spindel, chief investment officer at Potomac River Capital. "We don't have any damage assessment and that will take some time. Even though he has described this as 'done', we're engaged. What comes next?" Spindel said. "I think the uncertainty is going to blanket the markets, as now Americans everywhere are going to be exposed. It's going to raise uncertainty and volatility, particularly in oil," he added. Spindel, however, said there was time to digest the news before markets open and said he was making arrangements to talk to other market participants. How will oil prices and inflation be affected? A key concern for markets would center around the potential impact of the developments in the Middle East on oil prices and thus on inflation. A rise in inflation could dampen consumer confidence and lessen the chance of near-term interest rate cuts. "This adds a complicated new layer of risk that we'll have to consider and pay attention to," said Jack Ablin, chief investment officer of Cresset Capital. "This is definitely going to have an impact on energy prices and potentially on inflation as well." While global benchmark Brent crude futures have risen as much as 18% since June 10, hitting a near five-month high of $79.04 on Thursday, the S&P 500 has been little changed, following an initial drop when Israel launched its attacks on Iran on June 13. Before the U.S. attack on Saturday, analysts at Oxford Economics modeled three scenarios, including a de-escalation of the conflict, a complete shutdown in Iranian oil production and a closure of the Strait of Hormuz, "each with increasingly large impacts on global oil prices." Israel-Iran timeline: How Israeli attack and Iranian retaliation unfolded In the most severe case, global oil prices jump to around $130 per barrel, driving U.S. inflation near 6% by the end of this year, Oxford said in the note. "Although the price shock inevitably dampens consumer spending because of the hit to real incomes, the scale of the rise in inflation and concerns about the potential for second-round inflation effects likely ruin any chance of rate cuts in the U.S. this year," Oxford said in the note, which was published before the U.S. strikes. In comments after the announcement on Saturday, Jamie Cox, managing partner at Harris Financial Group, agreed oil prices would likely spike on the initial news. But Cox said he expected prices to likely level in a few days as the attacks could lead Iran to seek a peace deal with Israel and the United States. "With this demonstration of force and total annihilation of its nuclear capabilities, they've lost all of their leverage and will likely hit the escape button to a peace deal," Cox said. Economists warn that a dramatic rise in oil prices could damage a global economy already strained by Trump's tariffs. Still, any pullback in equities might be fleeting, history suggests. During past prominent instances of Middle East tensions coming to a boil, including the 2003 Iraq invasion and the 2019 attacks on Saudi oil facilities, stocks initially languished but soon recovered to trade higher in the months ahead. On average, the S&P 500 slipped 0.3% in the three weeks following the start of conflict, but was 2.3% higher on average two months following the conflict, according to data from Wedbush Securities and CapIQ Pro. What will this mean for the US dollar? An escalation in the conflict could have mixed implications for the U.S. dollar, which has tumbled this year amid worries over diminished U.S. exceptionalism. In the event of U.S. direct engagement in the Iran-Israel war, the dollar could initially benefit from a safety bid, analysts said. "Do we see a flight to safety? That would signal yields going lower and the dollar getting stronger," said Steve Sosnick, chief market strategist at IBKR in Greenwich, Connecticut. "It's hard to imagine stocks not reacting negatively and the question is how much. It will depend on Iranian reaction and whether oil prices spike." On news that a Senate committee desires changes in President Trump's "Big, Beautiful Bill" that favor the once-struggling industry, interest rose sharply in nuclear stocks. Nano was a direct beneficiary of this; according to data compiled by S&P Global Market Intelligence, its share price had ballooned by nearly 25% week to date as of Friday before market open. The bill is an ambitious budget reconciliation proposal that would reshape the federal budget. Early in the week, one new change floated by the Senate Finance Committee was an adjustment of the tax credits the feds provide to energy producers. Some power-generation technologies currently out of favor with the present administration would have their tax credit expiration dates brought forward, while others would be granted extensions. Happily for Nano investors, nuclear energy is in the latter category. The committee is proposing that nuclear's energy production tax credit, currently set to be phased out on Dec. 31, 2032, have a new expiration date of Dec. 31, 2036. The president has been active in his support for nuclear power, which in the recent past was largely shunned. Its reputational decline was due mostly to high-profile accidents such as the Three Mile Island incident in 1979, and the catastrophic 1986 meltdown of the Chernobyl plant located in Ukraine (then part of the Soviet Union). Despite its very positive-sounding name, the "Big, Beautiful Bill" is controversial and contentious among both legislators and the U.S. public. Given that, it's very possible that it will be hammered out through more compromises -- and these might lead lawmakers to rescind the nuclear tax credit extension idea. Still, the proposal currently on the table at least indicates continued strong, top-level support for nuclear power, and that can only help companies like Nano.
