In a rare 1980 interview, Amitabh Bachchan revealed he once smoked 200 cigarettes daily, drank heavily, and ate meat—habits he later quit for a simpler, disciplined life
Amitabh Bachchan, Bollywood's living legend, widely admired today for his disciplined and modest lifestyle, once led a very different life. In a candid 1980 interview with India Today, the megastar opened up about his former habits, which included heavy smoking, regular alcohol consumption, and eating meat.
'I do not smoke, drink, or eat meat. It is not a religious issue, but a matter of taste," he said. 'I used to consume meat, drink alcohol, and smoke, but I have given all that up." His decision to quit was not motivated by religious beliefs but stemmed from practical challenges, especially the difficulty of finding vegetarian food while travelling abroad.
Amitabh Bachchan also noted that dietary differences in his family were never a cause for conflict. His wife, Jaya Bachchan, and his mother, Teji, both enjoyed non-vegetarian food, while his father, Harivansh Rai Bachchan, was a lifelong vegetarian.
He revealed that during his time in Calcutta, he smoked up to 200 cigarettes a day. 'Yes, 200," he admitted. 'But I quit after coming to Bombay. I drank excessively too, but some years ago, I realised I didn't need it." Amitabh Bachchan also shared in the interview, 'These habits no longer affect me, except when I'm shooting overseas, where finding vegetarian food can be quite a challenge."
Beyond lifestyle changes, Amitabh Bachchan also spoke about his temperament, describing himself as generally calm but quick-tempered in his younger days. 'I don't think I'm a violent person, nor do I often lose my temper," he said, though he acknowledged getting into a few college fights. On cinematic violence, he remarked, 'It should be grand, and people accept it as such."
Professionally, Amitabh Bachchan continues to stay active in cinema. He was last seen in the futuristic pan-India film Kalki 2898 AD (2024), and later appeared alongside Rajinikanth in Vettaiyan (2024), marking their first on-screen reunion since their 1991 hit Hum.

Former Bihar Chief Minister and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad Yadav was found guilty of illegal withdrawals of Rs 139.35 crore from the Doranda treasury by a special CBI court in Jharkhand's Ranchi. In 2013, he was convicted in the 1st fodder scam case and sentenced to 5 years imprisonment along with Rs 25 lakh fine. In 2017, the CBI court had convicted Lalu Yadav and 15 others and the current one is for the 2nd of six fodder scam cases. Attacking RJD, Vijay Sinha said that people like them are trying to create an atmosphere to make Bihar 'unhealthy' and mentioned that such people are 'mentally ill'. 'Today, more than 176 countries have accepted this yoga. This yoga makes the body pure and healthy, connects humanity. Yoga always transmits positive energy. Those who are mentally ill can also become healthy through yoga, demonic tendencies can be eliminated... These people (Lalu Yadav, Tejashwi Yadav) try to create an atmosphere of making Bihar unhealthy. Such people are mentally ill', Vijay Sinha told ANI. Earlier today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday took part in the 11th International Day of Yoga celebrations, where he hailed yoga as a gift 'beyond age' that transcends all boundaries and unites humanity in 'health and harmony.' Friends, I am truly delighted that we are gathered here in Visakhapatnam, a city that beautifully blends nature with progress. I extend my heartfelt congratulations to Chandrababu Naidu Garu and Pawan Kalyan for hosting such a wonderful event under your inspiring leadership. It is commendable that the state of Andhra Pradesh has taken this meaningful initiative to promote yoga,' said PM Modi while addressing the gathering. (ANI)

Prosenjit Chatterjee On Sitaare Zameen Par's Theatre-Only Release: 'Aamir Can Take Risks'

Last Updated: Aamir Khan's decision to delay the OTT release of Sitaare Zameen Par is praised by Prosenjit Chatterjee, who believes Aamir understands audience sensibilities. Aamir Khan's film, Sitaare Zameen Par, a spiritual successor to his beloved 2007 film Taare Zameen Par, finally released on June 20, 2025. The film, inspired by the Spanish hit Champions (2018), has been receiving rave reviews. The Bollywood superstar has decided that his latest film will never be released on any streaming platform. It will have a theatre-only release. Now, Prosenjit Chatterjee has lauded Aamir Khan for his approach to filmmaking. In a conversation with India Today, the veteran actor remarked that Aamir 'can take the risk" because he 'understands the pulse and sensibilities of the audiences." However, he also noted, 'nothing will change." Prosenjit said, 'He can take the risk. He has been serving the industry for many years, and he understands the pulse and sensibilities of the audiences." However, Prosenjit believes that Aamir's bold move is unlikely to bring about any real change. 'To save the theatrical business and cinema, he (Aamir Khan) is a person who can think this way or take this kind of risk. Nothing will change, a film will come on OTT and then on satellite television. That's how it works, that's how we reach our Indian audiences. But let's see how this goes (Sitaare Zameen Par's only-cinema model), and I hope it works," added Prosenjit. In an exclusive interview with News18 Showsha earlier, Aamir Khan had shared his thoughts on how the fast shift to OTT after the pandemic has affected theatre business. He explained that releasing films too soon online takes away from the cinema experience, and he strongly believes that good films deserve to be seen on the big screen. In a candid conversation, Aamir Khan reflected on how the rise of OTT platforms has impacted the theatrical experience. 'I don't know any business where you offer your product, and if someone doesn't buy it, you tell them—don't worry, I'll drop it at your house for free in eight weeks," Aamir said, adding, 'It doesn't make sense to me. That's the reason many films aren't doing well in theatres." He described the current situation as a 'famine and feast" model where either a few films do extremely well or most don't work at all. He believes the early OTT release trend has weakened the theatrical culture and, therefore, made a conscious choice to keep his upcoming film Sitaare Zameen Par exclusive to theatres. 'I believe in theatres. I believe in my audience. If you make a good film, people will come to watch it on the big screen." Sitaare Zameen Par is a sports comedy drama film directed by R. S. Prasanna, and produced by Aamir Khan and Aparna Purohit. Aroush Datta, Gopi Krishna Varma, Samvit Desai, Vedant Sharma, Ayush Bhansali, Ashish Pendse, Rishi Shahani, Rishabh Jain, Naman Mishra and Simran Mangeshkar will make their Hindi cinema debut with the film.
