AICC team visits crime spot

Bhubaneswar: A high-level Congress fact-finding team, led by former AICC general secretary Deepa Dasmunshi, visited Gopalpur beach in Ganjam district on Saturday where a 20-year-old college student was allegedly gang-raped by 10 persons. Besides Dasmunshi, the all-women team comprisesMPs Ranjeet Ranjan, Praniti Shinde and S Jothimani and former Congress spokesperson Shobha Oza. The team is tasked with conducting an on-the-spot inquiry, meeting the victim, her family, law enforcement officials and other stakeholders and preparing a report to be submitted to the AICC president. Ten persons, including four minors, have been arrested in connection with the gang-rape of the college student at the famed Gopalpur beach. The incident happened on June 15 night when the woman, an undergraduate student at a private college, went to the beach along with her boyfriend, who is a classmate, on the occasion of the Raja festival. Speaking to reporters, Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) president Bhakta Charan Das said, 'The party has taken the recent cases of violence against women in Odisha very seriously and therefore dispatched a high-level fact-finding team. I have also written to Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi seeking time for the team to meet him.' 'I hope, the Chief Minister will allot time to meet the team members,' Das added. At Gopalpur, the team members discussed the matter with people and asked them on patrolling in the area. The team also met Berhampur SP Saravana Vivek M and discussed both the Gopalpur gang-rape case and the rape of two minor girls in Golanthara on June 5. The SP informed the team that all accused persons in both cases have been arrested. 'We visited the spot where the girl was gang-raped on Gopalpur beach and found that there were no safety measures for women on the beach despite the place being an important tourist destination. We also plan to meet President Droupadi Murmu,' said Rajya Sabha member Ranjan, adding that the three MPs will raise the matter in Parliament. Ranjan claimed that atrocities against women in Odisha were increasing as at least three gang-rape cases were reported this week. 'When our MLAs demanded to form a House committee and discuss the matter, the government did not listen and suspended them from the House,' she said. Meanwhile, Odisha Pradesh Mahila Congress president Meenakshi Bahinipati and party MLA Sofia Firdous held a press conference over the gang-rape cases in Delhi. In a recent social media post, Congress leader and party's Lok Sabha member Priyanka Gandhi had condemned the Gopalpur gang-rape case and accused the State's BJP government of gross negligence. The BJP's Ganjam district president Saroj Sabat said the government has taken the matter very seriously and an IGP-ranked officer has been supervising the investigations. Senior BJD leader Chandra Sekhar Sahu, a former MP, said his party was first to protest the Gopalpur case. The BJD president and former chief minister Naveen Patnaik also condemned the incident and expressed concern over such a heinous crime at a tourist spot.

CM should write to Prez against guv: Venugopal

Kottayam: AICC general secretary K C Venugopal said that the governor is degrading the constitutional position he holds. He demanded that chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan should write to the President about it. Venugopal told reporters in Alappuzha on Saturday that the post of the governor is the highest constitutional post in a state. "He has decided to forfeit its value. It is not a post that should be used for selfish political interests. The President should intervene in such matters. The CM should write a letter to the President at the earliest, pointing out that the governor is misusing his post," he said. Venugopal also asked why the CM is not ready for it. He said that the finance minister's announcement that welfare pension will be provided from the 20th of this month was only to influence the voters of Nilambur and misuse the election. This is a blatant violation of the election code of conduct. The Election Commission should take this seriously. The UDF will consider filing a complaint, he said. He said that during the Nilambur byelection, he strongly criticised the way welfare pension is being distributed in arrears. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trading CFD dengan Teknologi dan Kecepatan Lebih Baik IC Markets Mendaftar Undo "Welfare pension is the right of the common man. They are entitled to receive it without arrears. This is the govt that came to power saying that welfare pension would be increased to Rs 2,500. Now, even as their term is about to end, it is only Rs 1,600," he added. Venugopal said UDF is confident that it will win the Nilambur byelection. "It is because of this certainty that the LDF has not paid the pension. There has never been another election where there was so much unity in the UDF. The Muslim League was more enthusiastic than the Congress. Sadikkali Thangal and P K Kunhalikutty worked as if it were their own election. The IUML cadres worked with more enthusiasm than they would have worked for an IUML candidate. All the leaders and cadres of the Congress worked together in unison," Venugopal said. The AICC general secretary also said Shashi Tharoor is an indivisible factor of the Congress. "Congress is a party that ensures freedom of expression. Congress has its own ideas and goals. Everyone has instructions to go along with it. The party has the right to take action if that 'Lakshman Rekha' is violated anywhere. Congress is not a party that violates anyone's freedom of expression and freedom of movement," Venugopal said in response to a question.

Congress names 40 district, city unit chiefs for Gujarat

After a process that lasted more than two months and saw senior Congress leaders visit 26 Lok Sabha constituencies, 182 Assembly segments, and 235 Blocks, the All India Congress Committee (AICC) Saturday appointed 40 chiefs of district and city units for Gujarat under the the 'Sangathan Srijan Abhiyan' — a pilot project intended to empower the district units. The list saw only one woman leader, Sonal Patel, who will head the Ahmedabad City unit. Patel, a former vice president of the Congress Mahila Morcha was the candidate against Union Home Minister Amit Shah in the 2024 LS polls from Gandhinagar constituency. She replaces former mayor and ex-MLA Himmatsinh Patel. 'Ahmedabad city president is a position that carries a lot of weight,' said a Congress leader. At least five of the DCC presidents were repeated — Rutvij Joshi (Vadodara city), Jashpalsinh Padhiyar (Vadodara district), Naushad Solanki (Surendranagar), Pratap Dudhat (Amreli), and Rajendrasinh Rana (Bharuch city). The party said the newly appointed DCC chiefs 'represent Gujarat's social and regional diversity and have been chosen for their grassroots connection, ideological clarity, and organisational ability'. At the AICC Session on April 9-10 in Gujarat, held in the state for the first time in about 60 years, district units were identified as key building blocks to build the Congress back-up. While this is a nationwide project, the Congress launched the pilot from Gujarat, a state where the party has been out of power now for 30 years and which is identified most closely with the BJP's rise post-Modi. The party on April 12 appointed 43 AICC and 183 PCC observers comprising senior leaders, including state in-charges, MPs, MLAs, and former PCC presidents, to oversee the appointments and make recommendations to the party high command. A statement issued on Saturday night by Congress general secretary in-charge (organisation) K C Venugopal said: 'The Abhiyan, launched to revitalise the party structure from booth to district level, focused on transparent, inclusive, and ideology-based leadership selection.' – With inputs from ENS Ahmedabad Asad Rehman is with the national bureau of The Indian Express and covers politics and policy focusing on religious minorities in India.
