HC stays arrest of Karni Sena leader in Agra MP house attack case

The Allahabad high court has stayed the arrest of Karni Sena leader Okendra Singh Rana in connection with two FIRs related to the alleged attack on the residence of Samajwadi Party Rajya Sabha MP Ram Ji Lal Suman in Agra. The incident followed a controversial statement made by the MP in the Parliament about medieval Rajput ruler Rana Sanga. A division bench of Justice Siddharth and Justice Harvir Singh passed the interim order and fixed the matter for further hearing after six weeks. The bench clarified that the protection granted would depend on the petitioner's cooperation with the ongoing investigation.
The court further directed that the investigating officer may arrest the petitioner if credible evidence emerges during the investigation, but only after recording reasons in writing and by the Supreme Court's guidelines laid down in the Arnesh Kumar case.
The first FIR (first information report) was lodged by Randhir Suman, a former MLA and son of MP Ram Ji Lal Suman, at Hariparwat police station in Agra on March 27, a day after members of Karni Sena allegedly vandalised the MP's residence. A second FIR was filed by a sub-inspector deployed in the MP's security.
Rana, the petitioner, sought protection from arrest in both cases, contending that his name did not appear in either FIR and that he was later falsely implicated during the investigation.

Five get life term in 1994 Etawah double murder case
Kanpur: The court in Etawah delivered a significant verdict on Friday concerning a double murder case dating back 30 years. Five people received life imprisonment sentences for killing Samajwadi Party-backed block head Ashok Kumar Yadav and village head Layaq Singh in 1994. Additional district judge (Anti-Dacoity Court) Ashok Kumar Dubey sentenced accused Ramesh Chandra, Sunil Kumar, Kuldeep, Shivnath, and Chandrajeet to life imprisonment and slapped a fine of Rs 20,000 on each for committing murder. The killings took place on October 9, 1994, at Basgawa village under Basrehar police station, where the attackers shot both victims in broad daylight, and then fled with Ashok Yadav's licensed rifle and fired shots in the air to create panic. The case acquired considerable political importance as it occurred during the regime of the then chief minister Mulayam Singh Yadav's Samajwadi Party , which increased its significance locally and across the state. Initially, seven people were named as accused in the case. During the trial proceedings, two accused Saleti Singh and Mohar Singh, passed away. The court found the other five accused guilty of the offences. SSP Etawah Brijesh Kumar Srivastava, said, "This judgment shows the success of Operation Conviction and strengthens people's trust in the justice system. Assistant government advocate Kaushalendra Tomar represented the state on behalf of prosecution. The verdict in this 30-year old case has provided solace to the victims' families, the SSP said.

A 'akhand deep' was lit at the temple as a symbol of hope and healing, with emotional appeals made for Patnaik's successful operation and quick return to public life. While talking to ANI, former MP and BJD leader Amar Patnaik said, 'We have gathered here at the Jagannath Temple in Hauz Khas, Delhi, along with members of the Odia community residing in the capital. As you know, our former Chief Minister, Naveen Patnaik, is undergoing surgery in Mumbai tomorrow morning. Just like yesterday, when people from every corner of Odisha came together in prayer for his speedy recovery, we, who are currently in Delhi and not in Bhubaneswar, have come to the Lord Jagannath temple here. We lit a lamp and prayed that his surgery goes smoothly and he recovers soon so he can once again serve the people of Odisha, as he always has.' He further added, 'Naveen Patnaik ji is a leader who believes that the true essence of politics is public service. For him, politics is a spiritual journey, a passion to serve the underprivileged. I believe there's no other leader like him in India. When his health is a concern, we are deeply worried and have come to pray for his recovery.' While talking to ANI, Rajya Sabha MP Sulata Deo said, 'When Naveen tweeted about his health, the entire state responded with love and concern. People lit lamps, performed rituals and prayed for him like they would for a family member. He has always said that every Odia is his family and today, the family is praying for him.
