Insider Reveals Key Reason for Why T.J. Watt is in Contract Dispute with Steelers

Pittsburgh Steelers All-Pro outside linebacker T.J. Watt is probably seeking $40 million a year or more, but Ian Rapoport of NFL Network would be surprised if Watt gets a higher APY than Cleveland Browns edge rusher Myles Garrett.
'You know, if they possibly can, they're going to try and to make him the highest-paid edge rusher in the NFL,' Rapoport said. 'Because we are still waiting on some details from these massive deals, it's a little tricky to see where T.J. Watt belongs.'
In regard to T.J. Watt skipping mandatory minicamp due to a contract dispute, former Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback and Hall of Famer Rod Woodson thinks the Steelers need to change their philosophy on how they structure contracts. He thinks the approach is outdated.

'The Steelers, when you have an existing contract, they normally tear it up and redo another contract for you,' Woodson said on Up & Adams with Kay Adams. 'But what I would say to the Steelers is times are changing. When you have a guy like T.J. Watt, you want to keep him happy because not only is he the leader on the field and off the field, but you're showing the rest of the players in the locker room how you treat your best players, especially in the history of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
'He's one of the best players to play at that position in the history of the Steelers. I think you do something a little bit different. Normally, they don't tear those contracts up and redo them, but I think you should really hardly think about it. He should be one of the highest-paid players at his position, if not the highest-paid player at his position.'
J.J. Watt stated several times this offseason that the Steelers messed up by not giving his brother an extension sooner.
'Reward your players earlier and reap the benefits in the long run. Dragging it out not only ends up costing more, it creates unnecessary tension. The longer you wait, the higher the price,' J.J. Watt wrote on X in response to a Brett Kollerman post that said dragging stuff out is the worst way to do things.

Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin is not worried about Watt's three-day absence from mandatory minicamp. He's confident that a solution will be reached at some point. When that will be is unknown, however.
'I'm not going to get into speculation there,' Tomlin said. 'You guys know what negotiations is about; I'm optimistic we're going to get things done because we got two sides that want things done. When that's going to occur, I don't know.'
Tomlin was not surprised that Watt held out from the three mandatory minicamp sessions.
'Certainly, we'd like him to be here, but certainly not surprised about where we are,' Tomlin said. 'We've expressed a desire to get the business done. He has as well, and so, we'll continue to work. We've been here before.'

Watt has not been around the team since cryptically throwing up the deuces on Instagram a few months ago.
Despite perception that Watt is not happy with the Steelers, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network does not believe there's bad blood between the two sides.
'I don't feel that this one is contentious,' Garafolo said on The Insiders. 'If a player misses mandatory minicamp over the next couple days, you don't have to fine a player. We'll see what the Steelers wind up doing on this one.
'I know that they feel really good about the talks that they've had and the offers that they've made… Mike Tomlin has the belief that T.J. Watt is gonna be just fine working away from the facility, so they're not stressing about that part of it.

'If there was a pressure point right now, and the start of training camp seems like it's a pressure point, I feel like this thing would get done. And it will get done at some point.'

NY Giants' Russell Wilson Drops Strong Malik Nabers Praise
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. After wrapping up their spring practice sessions, the New York Giants will soon be back in action for the training camp portion of the 2025 NFL offseason. When the Giants take the practice field once again, they hope to see the QB-WR combination of Russell Wilson and Malik Nabers in action. Although they haven't had a chance to work on their on-field connection just yet, Wilson is confident that his No. 1 target is going to show out as the top wideout in the league next season. At FanaticsFest this week, Wilson made a major claim about his sophomore wideout. "It's funny, my locker is actually the same locker that I had when we won the Super Bowl. The second thing is, my locker is right next to this dude, who is the best receiver in the league," Wilson said as he pointed to Nabers. It's no surprise Wilson considers his guy the best in the game. While some might argue that sentiment, Wilson might not be far off, considering the campaign Nabers just put together. Aller/Getty Images During his rookie season, Nabers ended up finishing the year within the top 10 for receiving yards. He caught 109 passes for 1,204 yards. As a rookie, the Giants wideout saw the end zone seven times. Nabers' 2024 season was highly impressive for two key reasons. The first was that he was a rookie. While plenty of rookies have come in and made day one impacts, producing like a top receiver without any prior NFL experience should always be viewed as an impressive feat. The second key reason was the fact that the Giants had no stability at the quarterback position. When the Giants selected Nabers out of LSU with the sixth-overall pick last year, they did it with the belief that Nabers and Daniel Jones could grow into a top QB-WR duo. Unfortunately, the Giants' former first-round passer did not pan out. Jones was benched before getting cut. For the remainder of the 2024 NFL season, the Giants couldn't get consistency under center, but that didn't stop Nabers from producing. The presence of Russell Wilson is expected to work wonders for Nabers. While Wilson is fighting a narrative that suggests his best days are long behind him, the one-time Super Bowl Champion could gain a big boost from playing with the talented 21-year-old Nabers next season. With Nabers currently nursing a toe injury, Wilson and Nabers haven't had a chance to go to work in OTAs or minicamp. If all goes right for Nabers over the next month, he should be back for training camp, putting together his first set of reps with the veteran quarterback.

Steelers Defensive Tackle Derrick Harmon Named to Preseason All-Rookie Team
Steelers Defensive Tackle Derrick Harmon Named to Preseason All-Rookie Team originally appeared on Athlon Sports. As coach Mike Tomlin said before the draft, the Pittsburgh Steelers had an "extreme urgency" to upgrade the defensive line, and that's exactly what they did. Advertisement By passing on a quarterback at No. 21 overall, general manager Omar Khan solidified the Steelers' defense-first mentality. Oregon defensive tackle Derrick Harmon's selection might've given Pittsburgh an easy transition for when Cameron Heyward decides to hang up his cleats. Harmon was just named to Preseason All-Rookie Team as selected by writer Gennaro Filice. "Typically, this is the time of year when NOTHING is guaranteed. Coaches constantly stress that rookies -- no matter how highly they're drafted -- must earn their keep before even thinking about filling a starting slot. Apparently, though, the Steelers aren't doing that whole song and dance with Harmon. Instinctive and versatile with a well-rounded skill set, the first-round pick is the kind of defensive lineman who thrives in Pittsburgh. Advertisement "Harmon racked up an eye-popping 55 pressures in 2024 -- 12 more than any other FBS interior D-lineman, per PFF -- and now he gets to learn from a 15th-year pro with a doctorate in disruption, Cam Heyward." After rookie minicamp, voluntary OTAs and mandatory mincamp, Harmon is already impressing his coaches. "He goes out there with the ones," defensive line coach Karl Dunbar said last week, via "He's our left starting defensive tackle. You can write that." Harmon led the FBS last season with 34 quarterback pressures and as a defensive tackle, was second with a 10.7 percent pressure rate. Advertisement Last year, the Steelers' run defense collapsed en route to an 0-5 finish to the season, including the Wild Card loss to the Baltimore Ravens. Harmon should help prevent that this upcoming season. Guilty Plea Results from Drone Incident During Steelers-Ravens Wild Card Game
Guilty Plea Results from Drone Incident During Steelers-Ravens Wild Card Game originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Pittsburgh Steelers Wild Card matchup with the Baltimore Ravens was halted by the sighting of a drone over the stadium back in January. Advertisement Now, a 43-year-old man has entered a guilty plea and was sentenced to one year of probation, 100 hours of community service and a $500 fine. Per the Baltimore Banner, Alexis Perez Suarez is from Baltimore and was responsible for the drone and the delay of the playoff game. 'Public safety is a top priority, so we're committed to protecting our airways above mass gatherings. Suarez knew that M&T Bank Stadium was under a temporary flight restriction, yet he flew his drone into the airspace anyway, which is unacceptable,' Kelly O. Hayes, U.S. Attorney for the District of Maryland, said. 'There is a zero-tolerance policy for operating Unmanned Aircraft Systems in No Drone Zones. The U.S. Attorney's Office, along with our partners, will hold those accountable who ignore the rules and regulations surrounding restricted airspace." The local FBI office was also involved in the investigation. Advertisement 'It is not just irresponsible and reckless, but illegal to fly a drone over a major sporting event such as a Ravens playoff game. Capturing a photo is not worth the risk of hurting any spectators, players, or employees. As shown by this investigation, the FBI and our partners will hold those caught violating the law fully accountable," Amanda M. Koldjeski, Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) – Baltimore Field Office said. The danger of a drone over a crowded stadium was emphasized as well. 'Federal laws regulating the use of drones exist for a reason: to protect people and keep our skies safe,' Special Agent in Charge Greg Thompson of the U.S. Department of Transportation Office of Inspector General said. 'Flying drones illegally— especially overcrowded sporting events — is reckless and dangerous. Today's guilty plea underscores our commitment to working with our partners to hold violators accountable and prevent potential disasters.'
