Short film shot at Niah National Park premiering this Father's Day

KUCHING: A short film shot entirely at Niah National Park is set to be released on Father's Day this Sunday (June 15).
"Space Between" not only showcases Sarawak's natural beauty but also portrays the relationship between a father and his young daughter as they explore their heritage of harvesting birds' nests in the depths of the Niah Caves.
Produced by 21 Ways Film, a Sarawakian production house, the film is believed to be the first to be shot on location at Niah National Park, a Unesco World Heritage Site.
State Deputy Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister Datuk Snowdan Lawan said initiatives like this reflected the growing creativity and confidence in Sarawak's film industry, as more filmmakers sought to tell stories rooted in the state's landscapes and traditions.
"I would like to commend the team behind 21 Ways Film for their effort and commitment in producing this film.
"Their work demonstrates the kind of homegrown storytelling that highlights Sarawak's unique identity, culture and talent," he said at the premiere screening of "Space Between" here on Monday.
Snowdan said the film was supported by the ministry's tourism, heritage and creative industry facilitation fund, which was established to encourage growth across the creative, tourism and performing arts sectors.
Looking ahead, he hoped that "Space Between" would be considered for submission to international film festivals.
"This will be a way to further showcase Sarawak's unique stories and landscapes as well as the capabilities of our local creative talents.
"Platforms like these offer opportunities for exposure, growth and connection with the wider world and we fully encourage our filmmakers to be bold in reaching beyond our borders," Snowdan said.
Director Danish Busmah described "Space Between" as a deeply personal story about a father and daughter.
"Behind the film lies something real, our collective desire as Sarawakians to tell stories that come from our heritage and lived experiences," he said.
The 12-minute film features local actors Julai Billie as the father Jon and Darweesha Dasuki as his daughter Sara.
It will be shown on TVS (Channel 122 on Astro, MYTV and Unifi TV) at 5.30pm on June 15.

Over 3,000 participants in 92 contingents from the Iban, Bida­yuh and Orang Ulu communities took part in the Niti Daun parade yesterday. Dressed in traditional costu­mes, they made a colourful sight as they walked from the Tun Jugah Building to the Kuching Waterfront, accompanied by 12 decorated floats. This year's parade, organised by the Orang Ulu community, began with the traditional Mamat ritual at the Tun Jugah Building. Historically, the thanksgiving ritual was conducted prior to headhunting expeditions and to seek blessings for the padi planting season. In modern times, the ritual continues to represent the core values of thanksgiving, unity, strength and courage. The parade was flagged off by Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg, accompanied by other state dignitaries. Participant Vanessa Livan Sigau, of mixed Kayan-Kenyah heritage, said this was her second time taking part in the parade. 'I look forward to opportunities to showcase my culture and traditional costume,' she said, pointing to her beaded sash, belt and feathered headgear known as tapung se'. Watt Enjup, a member of the Persatuan Kebajikan Terabai Menua contingent, said the parade brought together Sara­wakians from all races to celebrate the Gawai festival together. 'It shows that Sarawak has many ethnic groups, but we are all united,' he said. Also taking part was a contingent from the Kadazan Dusun Cultural Association Sarawak branch and a delegation from North Kalimantan. Gawai is a festival celebrated by Sarawak's Dayak community on June 1 and June 2 to mark the end of the harvest season. The festival is a time for thanksgiving, celebrating diverse cultures, and strengthening bonds of friendship through open houses and other traditions.

MIRI (June 21): Mercure Miri City Centre has successfully hosted the city's first-ever mural art festival and conference from June 4 to 14, transforming parts of the city into a vibrant, large-scale exhibition space. Held with the theme 'Envision Miri 2075, Powered by PEAKS,' the event invited artists and the wider community to imagine the city's future through public art and open dialogue. Organisers described the festival as not just as a celebration of creativity but as the beginning of a long-term cultural movement rooted in Miri's identity. Six muralists were commissioned to interpret visions of the city's future on walls around the hotel, specially prepared for the project. The featured artists included Sheep Chen, Helenya Apostolou, Bounce, Amey Sheikh Ali, Sam Lim and Letterhythm, each bringing unique perspectives to the theme. Miri-born artist Jagung served as lead curator, contributing a 16-storey mural, now the tallest in Sarawak, which became the centrepiece of the festival. The last two days of the event featured an Art Conference that focused on topics around art, identity and long-term community development. Several dignitaries officiated the event, including Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, who represented the Sarawak Premier, along with Deputy Minister Datuk Sebastian Ting. In his opening remarks, Evolveland CEO Roger Sim, the driving force behind Mercure Miri, called for stronger support for local creatives. 'Miri has every potential to become an art capital for Sarawak, if stakeholders, communities, and creatives come together to build that dream,' he said. Meanwhile, Abdul Karim emphasised the role of art in sustaining culture, and encouraged more public-private partnerships to support the creative economy. Keynote speaker Juvita Tatan Wan, co-founder of The Tuyang Initiative and MYYinitiative, encouraged local communities to invest in grounded cultural work. 'Embrace your pace. Find beauty in what is slow and grounded, because that is often where the deepest art resides,' she said. Panel discussions explored Sarawakian art history, mural commissions, curatorial practice, the impact of AI and digital media on artists, and the role of mental health in creative work. One of the most powerful sessions was 'Artism,' focusing on creative expression for individuals with learning disabilities. Aqif, one of the featured children, contributed a mural to the newly launched Wall of Resilience, now showcasing artworks by neurodivergent youth. The initiative was widely seen as a powerful statement of inclusivity, ensuring that no one is left behind in Miri's evolving cultural narrative.
