Hirebenakal eyes Unesco heritage tag through site upgrade
Koppal: Development initiatives are being planned at Hirebenakal, a 3,000-year-old megalithic site in Gangavathi taluk, with the goal of securing Unesco World Heritage status. The site, under the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), Hampi Circle's protection, sits atop a castellated granite hillock, accessible from 3km southeast of the village. British officer Philip Meadows Taylor first discovered these monuments in 1835 while serving at the court of Nizam of Hyderabad. He presented the site internationally through a research publication in the Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society. Locals describe the site, spanning over 20 hectares, as 'Morera houses'. The site's information board indicates these stone structures were built as memorials for the deceased. Some suggest Stone Age dwarfs inhabited these house-like formations. A large pond exists near the structures, indicating Neolithic Age inhabitants, primarily farmers, occupied this area. These rock tombs and cave art are currently on Unesco's World Heritage tentative list. The site houses the second-largest collection of monuments after Madhya Pradesh's cave paintings. Termed 'Rock monuments of early man', numerous well-preserved tombs exist here. Experts estimate approximately 500 tombs at this megalithic site. The site displays rock paintings depicting dancing, hunting, and weapon-wielding figures. Additional artwork includes geometric patterns and mystical designs of deer, peacocks, humped bulls, bullocks, horses, and cows. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "If properly excavated, more important things can come to light at this site," says Dr Sharanabasappa Kolkar, a historian from Gangavathi. A hemispherical kettledrum stone, strategically positioned on a hillock, measures 2.2m in diameter with 1.5m radial height. It sits on a 10m high monolithic boulder with a beating surface. When struck with stone or wooden implements, it produces musical sounds audible beyond 1km. Dr Sharanabasappa Kolkar mentions that during Rajnish Goyal's visit, the Kalaburgi regional commissioner, in 2010, they proposed including the site in the Unesco World Heritage list. The archaeological department forwarded the application, but Unesco rejected it. "Due to persistent efforts, two years ago, Unesco added the Hirebenkal megalithic site to its provisional list, and we must accelerate efforts to secure its place on the permanent list," he emphasised. Tourism minister HK Patil, during his recent visit, announced plans to develop the site to international standards. He assured that govt would undertake all necessary steps to achieve World Heritage List recognition. Additionally, Patil announced that to educate Bengaluru residents about the site's importance, they would organise a photographic exhibition of the rock tombs at the Venkatappa Art Gallery by Aug 15. Plans are under way to conduct further research within a 5km radius of the hill.

Historic Sharjah site is candidate for Unesco World Heritage status
A site in Sharjah where evidence of human habitation dating back more than 210,000 years has been found is a candidate for Unesco World Heritage status. Faya, an ancient archaeological site of huge significance in the Arabian Peninsula, is among 30 sites being considered by the UN's cultural body. Unesco's World Heritage committee will now make a decision at its 47th session to be held from July 7 to 16 in Paris. The Sharjah site is what is known as a palaeolandscape, providing insights into how early humans lived, migrated, and adapted to environments. Sheikha Bodour Al Qasimi is the official ambassador of the emirate's Unesco World Heritage nomination file. 'Faya offers one of the oldest and most complete records of early human presence in Arabia, dating back over 210,000 years - a living archive that deepens our understanding of who we are, where we came from, and how we have learnt to survive,' said Sheika Bodour, in remarks carried by state news agency Wam last month. 'The Faya palaeolandscape's nomination for Unesco World Heritage status highlights the importance of preserving these ancient sites, not only for their historical value but for their potential to educate future generations. As ambassador, I see this nomination as an opportunity to elevate Faya as a shared inheritance for all people around the world." Research pays off The Faya Range, a chain of limestone outcrops known in Arabic as jebels, can be considered a natural barrier between the Rub Al Khali desert to its west and the Dhaid-Madam plain to its east. The area is rich in resources such as flint and freshwater springs, which made human settlements there. There is evidence of human tools, life and burials. Scientists say the environment and people's way of living changed over thousands of years in the area. 'Over 30 years of meticulous research and collaboration led by our national mission and experts with international experts have revealed 18 distinct archaeological layers from the Stone Age, bringing to light an intricate history of human evolution, adaptation and survival right here in Sharjah,' said Eisa Yousif, director of the Sharjah Archaeology Authority, in remarks also carried by Wam. 'As we advance Faya's Unesco World Heritage nomination, it is important to emphasise that our collaborative efforts have made this a global project; one that connects the past with the present more strongly, adding to the rich global corpus of archaeological discoveries. This property, therefore, holds immense value for the world - not just Sharjah and the UAE," he added. Faya was added to Unesco's tentative list in 2023. The UAE has developed a comprehensive management plan for the Faya Palaeolandscape, which will guide its conservation, research, and visitor engagement from 2024 to 2030, Wam said. This plan aligns with Unesco's World Heritage standards, ensuring that the site is preserved while also allowing for continued exploration and education. The UAE has currently one site on the heritage list. The cultural sites of Al Ain (Hafit, Hili, Bidaa Bint Saud and Oases Areas) were collectively added in 2011. Unesco's meeting, meanwhile, will also see it examine the extension of two sites already on the list and will review of the state of conservation of 248 sites already inscribed. To date, it has inscribed 1,223 cultural and natural sites in 168 countries on the World Heritage list.

'As Malacca positions itself on the global stage, hosting high-profile events and leveraging its Unesco World Heritage status, we anticipate a broader influx of international visitors. 'Initiatives such as the recent grand opening of the Dusit Princess Melaka, with its modern meeting and event facilities, further enhance our readiness to welcome large-scale conferences and business travellers,' Suter told SunBiz. Dusit Princess Melaka, a brand under Dusit International, celebrated its official grand opening on May 29, introducing a new standard of upscale Thai-inspired hospitality to the state. The hotel unveiled one of the largest meeting and event spaces in Malacca, enhancing the city's appeal as a regional meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions (MICE) destination. The hotel's official grand opening ceremony was officiated by Malacca Governor Tun Dr Mohd Ali Mohd Rustam and attended by Thailand's ambassador to Malaysia Lada Phumas and Dusit International chief operating officer Gilles Cretallaz. Iran shuts museums, transfers artifacts to safer locations
Authorities in Iran have ordered all the museums in the country to shut down until further notice following the deadly airstrikes by Israel. Museums are also told to transfer valuable artifacts to secure locations. The local news agency has reported that the order to do so was issued by Ali Darabi, Iran's deputy minister and cultural heritage chief. Iran has over 800 museums, 28 Unesco World Heritage Sites. Country's rich cultural history stretches back thousands of years and boasts extensive and varied collections. The National Museum of Iran in Tehran contains over 300,000 artifacts, whereas the Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art features a significant collection of works by renowned artists like Pablo Picasso, Vincent van Gogh, Andy Warhol, and Jackson Pollock. The ministry manages about 300 museums, while the others are operated by various entities such as municipalities, the Mostazafan Foundation, or private proprietors. Everyone has been directed to adhere to the same emergency procedures to avoid looting, harm, or destruction.

Agents say the site offers a secure income profile with 'undoubted covenants' with shoppers in the area spending around £19m a year on non-food items, Regular shoppers at Portlethen Retail Park have been told they don't need to worry as the sale won't mean any changes. All four of the main stores at the site, Aldi, Home Bargains, B&M and Matalan, are reportedly staying put, and the retail park will continue to operate as normal under new ownership.
