One of the most impressive areas of generative AI software like ChatGPT right now involves enhanced computer vision. AI can understand and interpret data from images. That's why we now have such advanced image and video generation models in ChatGPT, Gemini, Firefly, and other AI software.
Models like ChatGPT o3 can accurately guess the location of an image by analyzing its details. Google offers advanced photo editing tools in its Photos app, and also directly in Gemini. These tools let you alter real photos in ways that weren't possible before.

These image-related AI capabilities aren't just used to generate memes or melt OpenAI's servers. Researchers are developing AI models that can interpret images for various purposes, including medicine.
The latest study showing such advancements comes from China.
Researchers from several universities have been able to determine a person's age with high accuracy by having AI inspect an image of their retina. The readings also showed differences between the person's age and the eye's age. The researchers found that the retinal age gap the AI provided can be especially helpful for women. A simple retinal scan might help doctors offer better support to couples trying to conceive and to women at risk of early menopause.
Retinal fundus imaging, or a photo of the back of the eye, lets doctors see microvascular features that reflect systemic aging. An AI trained on thousands of images can then predict the eye's age and compare it to the person's actual age to 'predict retinal age from fundus images with high precision.'
The scientists used an AI called Frozen and Learning Ensemble Crossover (FLEX) to predict retinal age from fundus images. They fed FLEX over 20,000 eye photos from more than 10,000 adults of all ages to teach it how the back of the eye looks as people age. FLEX also analyzed over 2,500 images from nearly 1,300 pre-menopausal women.
The AI was then able to estimate a person's age by examining a retinal fundus photo. If the eye appears older than the woman's actual age, the retinal age gap is positive. That could also mean other organs in the body are aging faster.
The implications for reproductive health are clear. Fertility and menopause issues could benefit directly from such an AI screening tool.
The researchers linked a larger retinal age gap to lower blood levels of anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH), a marker for ovarian reserve. The lower the AMH value, the harder it is for older women to conceive.
The scientists studied women ages 40 to 50 and found that each additional retinal year raised the risk of a low AMH result. The risk increased by 12% in the 40-44 age group and by 20% in the 45-50 group for every extra retinal year.
The study also found that having more childbirths at younger ages was associated with lower AMH levels than average.
Each additional retinal year increased the risk of developing menopause before age 45 by 36%, according to the paper.
We're still in the early days of using AI for medical imaging, but the study shows promise for using a simple, non-invasive technique to improve reproductive health protocols. Imagine getting a retinal scan in your late 20s or early 30s to help decide whether to get pregnant or freeze your eggs.
Similarly, women over 40 concerned about pre-menopause or menopause could use an eye scan to check their retinal age and assess the risk of early symptoms. This might help them prepare for the years ahead with hormonal therapies to delay or ease symptoms.
For any of this to happen, the conclusions from Hanpei Miao & Co. would need to be confirmed by further research.
Separately, the FLEX AI model used in this study could be explored for other health conditions where eye scans might serve as early indicators of age-related health risks.
The full study is available in Nature magazine.

Bernstein SocGen Lifts MSFT Target to $540 on AI-Driven Cloud Outlook

Bernstein SocGen has raised its price target on Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) to $540 from $520, and kept an Outperform rating for the stock a couple of weeks ago. Shares are trading at $477, near their 52-week high, with a market cap of $3.55 trillion. The firm sees longer-term upside tied to Microsoft's partnership with OpenAI. If OpenAI's roadmap unfolds as projected, Azure stands to capture a sizable share of the resulting demand, particularly in cloud infrastructure. Bernstein believes this could materially boost Microsoft's top line by 2029–2030. Image by Tawanda Razika from Pixabay To account for this, the analysts raised their revenue forecast for FY27 and increased earnings estimates for FY26 and FY27. They've also bumped Microsoft's valuation multiple from 28.5x to 29.5x. Most of the expected gains fall outside the near-term forecast window, but the analysts argue the long-range potential is strong enough to justify the upward adjustment. Azure's position in the AI supply chain remains central to that view. While we acknowledge the potential of MSFT as an investment, our conviction lies in the belief that some AI stocks hold greater promise for delivering higher returns and have limited downside risk. Adobe brings AI-image generation app to phones, adds partners

(Corrects paragraphs 2-4 to reflect that new partner models are not yet available on the Firefly mobile app) By Stephen Nellis SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) -Adobe Inc. released its first dedicated artificial intelligence smartphone app on Tuesday that includes AI models from the company and partner firms, in a bid to tap into a growing trend of sharing AI images and videos over social media. The new Firefly mobile app packages Adobe's own AI model together with models from OpenAI and Google and is available on iOS and Android phones. In addition, Adobe is integrating models from new partner firms Ideogram, Luma AI, Pika and Runway, which can be accessed in Firefly Boards, a product that is part of the Firefly web app. Generating images that can easily be shared on social media has become a key driver of AI interest, with OpenAI's Ghibli-style AI images driving record traffic to the ChatGPT creator. Adobe's mobile service will offer subscribers unlimited basic image generation from Adobe models, while it will charge extra for access to the company's premium models and those from its partners. The subscription cost will be the same as for the web versions of Firefly, which start at $10 per month. The San Jose, California-based company had earlier released AI tools along with the mobile app version of its popular image-editing program Photoshop. Adobe has not disclosed how much it pays the partner models on the Firefly app. The company had promised users that its AI model is trained only on material that it has a legal right to use, with Adobe offering protection against copyright claims. Ely Greenfield, Adobe's chief technology officer for digital media, said Adobe's approach has also gained some resonance among consumers. "Even for many of our individual customers, that promise of the commercial safety and the story about how Firefly is trained continues to be a really important differentiator," Greenfield said. Adobe's New iOS and Android AI Apps Let You Use Google's Veo 3, Runway and More

Adobe's Firefly AI is now available as mobile apps for iPhones and Androids, the company announced on Tuesday. These apps are free to download and let you use Firefly to create AI images and videos on the go. Plus, the app comes with a few free generative credits for you to experiment with Adobe's AI. Adobe is also expanding its roster of third-party AI partners to include six new models from Ideogram, Pika, Luma and Runway. Google's latest AI models are also joining the lineup, including the internet-famous Veo 3 AI video generation model with native audio capabilities and the Imagen 4 text-to-image model support. Finally, its moodboarding AI program, Firefly Boards, is generally available today after months in beta. Here's everything you need to know about Adobe's newest batch of Firefly AI updates. For more, check out our favorite AI image generators and what to know about AI video models. Firefly AI for iOS and Android users Adobe's Firefly mobile apps will let you access its AI image and video capabilities from your phone. A mobile app felt like the next natural step, since Adobe saw that mobile web usage of Firefly noticeably increased after Adobe's Firefly video capability launched in early 2025. Not every Firefly feature will be available at launch, but for now, we know that these features will be included: text-to-image, text- and image-to-video, generative fill, and generative expand. You can download the app now from the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. The app is free to download, but you'll need a Firefly-inclusive Adobe plan to really use the app. In the hopes that you'll sign up for a full plan, Adobe gives you 12 free generation Firefly credits (10 for images, two for videos, which doesn't shake out to many of each). So you can use those to see if Firefly is a good fit for you. Firefly plans start at $10 per month for 2,000 credits (about 20 videos), increasing in price and generation credits from there. Depending on your Adobe plan, you may already have access to Firefly credits, so double-check that first. Adobe's six new AI models from Google, Runway and more Adobe's also adding new outside AI creative models to its offerings, including image and video models from Ideogram, Pika, Luma and Runway. You might recognize the name Runway from its deal with Lionsgate to create models for the entertainment giant. Ideogram, Pika and Luma are all other well-known AI creative services. Google's Veo 3 AI video generator is also joining, bringing its first-of-its-kind synchronized AI audio capabilities, along with the latest generation of Google's AI image model. This is the second batch of third-party models that Adobe has added to its platform. Earlier this spring, Adobe partnered with OpenAI, Google and Black Forest (creator of Flux) to bring the companies' AI models to Adobe. What's unique about this is that all third-party models have to agree to Adobe's AI policy, which prevents all the companies from training on customers' content -- even if the individual companies don't have that policy on their own, it's standardized across all models offered through Adobe. This is also true for the new models added today. For AI-wary professional creators who make up the majority of Adobe users, that's a bit of good news. You'll need a paid Firefly plan to access outside models; otherwise, you'll just have access to the Adobe models. Here are all the AI models available through Adobe: Adobe Firefly Image 3 Adobe Firefly Image 4 Adobe Firefly Image Ultra Flux 1.1 Pro Flux 1 Kontext Google's Imagen 3 OpenAI's image generation model (new) Ideogram 3 (new) Google's Imagen 4 (new) Runway's Gen-4 Image For video, you can use: Adobe Firefly Video Google Veo 2 (new) Google Veo 3 (new) Luma AI Ray 2 (new) Pika's text-to-video generator Adobe's own Firefly AI models are trained on a combination of Adobe Stock and other licensed content. AI moodboarding gets a boost Other Adobe updates include the general release of its moodboarding program, Firefly Boards, which has been in beta since April. Moodboarding is a practice that lets you cluster together different elements, like colors and shapes, to evoke specific moods and aesthetics. It's a good initial step for planning content and campaigns. Adobe You can use the infinite canvas to brainstorm and plan content. You can generate images and videos in Boards using Adobe and non-Adobe models; the setups are very similar to generating in the regular Firefly window. Boards are collaborative, so you can edit with multiple people. A new one-click arrange button can help you organize and visualize your files more easily, a much-requested feature that came out of the beta. Firefly boards are synced up with your Adobe account. So you can select a photo in a Board, open it in Photoshop and edit it. Those changes will then be synced up with your Firefly Board in less than a minute, so you can always see the latest version of your file without needing to be limited to editing in Boards.
