Dunkerque near to securing successor to Luís Castro

Yahoo2 days ago

USL Dunkerque have found their successor to Luís Castro, after the Portuguese head coach was headhunted by FC Nantes. According to a report from L'Équipe, Dunkerque are moving quickly to try and secure the services of Gonçalo Feio.
Feio, who is a free agent after he failed to agree on a contract extension with Legia Warsaw, had an impressive season in Poland. He helped lead the club to a quarter-final berth in the UEFA Europa Conference League, where they were eliminated by eventual champions Chelsea (but managed to win at Stamford Bridge).

L'Équipe writes that Feio is expected to arrive in the North of France soon, where he will sign a contract with the Ligue 2 side.
Despite having one of the smaller budgets in the league, Dunkerque narrowly missed out on promotion to the top flight this season. The Ligue 2 side finished the campaign in 4th, and were eventually beaten in the playoffs by FC Metz. Les Maritimes will be hoping that they can plot a way into Ligue 1 for the first time in their history.

Kevin Durant becomes part-owner of Champions League winner PSG amid trade talks

NBA All-Star Kevin Durant has purchased a stake in French football club Paris Saint-Germain. After acquiring 5% of MLS club Philadelphia Union in 2020, the Phoenix Suns superstar is strengthening his business portfolio by becoming a part-owner of the recently crowned Champions League winners. On Friday, PSG announced that Qatar Sports Investment, its majority shareholder, had signed a strategic partnership agreement with Durant. The details of the deal were not revealed. "Under the terms of the partnership, Durant — via his media and investment company Boardroom, co-founded with longtime business partner Rich Kleiman — will acquire a direct minority stake in the club," PSG's statement read. Advertisement In a comment released by PSG, Durant said, "It is an honor to partner with QSI and be a shareholder in Paris Saint-Germain — a club and city that is deeply close to my heart. "This club has big plans and I look forward to being part of the next phase of growth and exploring new investment opportunities with QSI." The club noted that the two-time NBA champion will be helping with its diversification, growth strategy and development in the United States and international markets. Durant will also use his expertise in PSG's multi-sport strategy, which includes plans around basketball. PSG currently has soccer, handball and eSports programs. Durant and Rich Kleiman's investment vehicle, Boardroom Sports Holdings, and QSI will collaborate on commercial, investment and content production efforts with the new partnership. Boardroom holds stakes in Major League Pickleball's Brooklyn Aces and NWSL's Gotham City FC. Advertisement Durant's investment comes as the NBA, FIBA and other entities are in talks about establishing a new basketball league in Europe. "Together with Kevin, we look forward to developing ambitious initiatives that will drive the continued global growth of Paris Saint-Germain and QSI," PSG president Nasser Al Khelaïfi said. Apart from proving their European supremacy with a 5-0 win over Inter Milan in the UCL final, PSG convincingly won the French Ligue 1 with a 26-6-2 (W-D-L) record and a 19-point lead over second-place Marseille. Durant finished his third season with the Suns and is in the heat of trade discussions after the team missed the postseason. The former MVP averaged 26 points and six rebounds per game before ending the season with a left ankle sprain.

Former Liverpool, Newcastle striker Andy Carroll leaves Bordeaux ‘to return home'

Andy Carroll has left Girondins de Bordeaux after one season with the French club. Bordeaux confirmed the former Liverpool and Newcastle United striker had departed to 'return home' and be closer to his children. Carroll, 36, has spent the past two seasons in France having joined Ligue 2 side Amiens on a free transfer in September 2023. Advertisement After scoring four goals in 35 appearances for the second-tier side, the former England international joined National 2 outfit Bordeaux in the country's fourth tier. 'Andy brought his experience, physical impact, and professionalism to his role on a daily basis, both in the locker room and during important matches,' Bordeaux said in a statement. 'Off the pitch, he is an exceptional and generous personality that the club's fans and employees have enjoyed working alongside. 'Today, to be closer to his children, Andy has chosen to return home. We fully understand and respect this personal decision.' Carroll scored 11 goals in 23 matches for Bordeaux during the 2024-25 campaign as the six-time French champions recorded a fourth-placed finish. He joined the club in a particularly turbulent financial time, and was taking home a salary which was said to be extremely modest by professional football standards. 'I'm actually spending more money to be at Bordeaux than I am earning, basically,' Carroll told The Athletic in October. 'My rent is more than what I'm taking in. That's before eating, driving, flying. It was the same at Reading, where my apartment was more than my wages. I don't care about the money.' Bordeaux were initially demoted to Ligue 2 following a 20th-placed finish in the 2021-2022 season after being placed into administration. The club then suffered an administrative double relegation to National 2 last summer after not being able to provide financial guarantees ahead of the 2024-25 campaign. The Athletic reported in July 2024 that Liverpool owner Fenway Sports Group withdrew from talks to buy Bordeaux, with the club later filing for bankruptcy and losing their professional status. Carroll came through Newcastle's academy and after scoring 11 goals in the first half of the 2010-11 Premier League campaign, became Liverpool's record signing when he moved to Anfield for £35million on deadline day in January 2011. Advertisement He went on to score 11 goals in 58 matches for the Merseyside club before joining West Ham, where he would stay for seven years, recording 34 goals and 16 assists in 142 matches. Carroll re-joined Newcastle in 2019 and scored one goal in two seasons before moving to Reading, West Bromwich Albion, and then returning to Reading the following season.
