Hot new protocol glues together AI and apps

AI developers are embracing a new technical standard that's speeding up chatbots' capacity to access the rest of the software we use every day.
Why it matters: The faster AI can start using the services and programs that shape our lives and work, the quicker it can save us time and money — and cause us new headaches.
How it works: Anthropic's Model Context Protocol is a technical definition that standardizes a relatively simple method developers can use to wire up today's AI models and bots to most other programs and data sources.
MCP lets users with modest technical skills give conversational bots — like ChatGPT and Claude — the keys to their other digital tools. (If you're comfortable running software locally in a terminal window, you can probably handle it.)
It's supported by many of AI's biggest players, including OpenAI, Google and Microsoft.
Developers have already built and shared hundreds of programs — called MCP servers — that developers and users can plug in.
What they're saying: "MCP is the first time I can say: here's a (relatively) easy way to connect your organization's tools and knowledge into an AI chat app and see what you learn," digital design guru Matt Webb wrote on his blog.
Zoom out: AI vendors have made big promises about a future in which autonomous AI agents will get things done for us with minimal supervision.
But few of these agents are working right now to handle everyday work, outside of a small number of very specific technical environments.
Zoom in: MCP offers a fast-and-dirty way to bridge the world of generative AI models with the web and mobile apps that most of us rely on today to do real work.
If you want ChatGPT to access your data in Notion or Evernote or some similar app, or you'd like Claude to access the files on your computer or in your Dropbox, MCP is an answer.
Reality check: Authentication, security and privacy are obvious trouble spots any time you give one system access to another. Right now MCP is largely a "proceed at your own risk" zone.
Between the lines: A protocol is just a description of an agreed method for one system to access another without knowing every detail of how the other one works.
Both the internet and the Web are built on a foundation of protocols, which allowed them to connect computers and later phones made by different firms using different operating systems.
MCP's status as an open protocol gives both model-makers and app-builders confidence that they can use it without getting locked into a particular vendor's tool set.
The protocol approach has prevailed in the past, advocates say, because it's fair, it's pro-competitive and it produces healthy software ecosystems full of choices for users.
Google recently unveiled its own open protocol, Agent2Agent (A2A), for connecting one AI agent to another.
Yes, but: It's tough to make money directly by creating or adopting an open protocol.
Microsoft veteran Steve Sinofsky identifies MCP as the latest form of "middleware," a category of software tool — like web browsers — that operates across platforms and often thrives during industry-wide platform shifts like the rush into AI.
Middleware, Sinofsky argues, "never quite lives up to [its] promises in practice."
Our thought bubble: Websites and apps are designed for people to use, so they have "human interfaces" like buttons, search features and dialogue boxes. MCP provides a way for AI to bypass that layer.

Decision time for millions Another suggestion this week that the decision to keep Windows 10 may soon be impossible, with all users with eligible PCs forced to upgrade. That would put a deadline on the free upgrade offer, before it's taken out of your hands. As I've warned before, Microsoft's small print on recent Windows 10 updates has opened that risk. Earlier this year, the Windows-maker forcibly installed its new Outlook client on Windows 10 devices, and then did the same with Windows 11 24H2 for PCs running Home and Pro editions of Windows 11 'that are not managed by IT departments.' But the more critical confirmation came last year, when the company auto-installed the KB5001716 patch on Windows 10 PCs, warning that 'Windows may attempt to download and install feature updates to your device if it is approaching or has reached the end of support for your currently installed Windows version.' That affects 400 million Windows 10 users. As another wave of Windows 10 upgrade warnings floods social media, Windows Latest points out that 'Windows 10 support ends on October 14, and it can be extended for a year if you pay $30. Otherwise, Microsoft will force upgrade supported PCs to Windows 11 whether you like it or not.' There are two questions that will shape the next 100 days. First, how many eligible Windows 10 PCs will upgrade. On that note, this month has seen some surprisingly good news for Microsoft, as millions suddenly upgrade after months of inertia, meaning Windows 11 is poised to overtake Windows 10's market share for the first it's not there yet — alarmingly more than half of all users remain on Windows 10. Second, how many PCs are not capable of that free upgrade. Analysts think there are at least 240 million of those PCs, but there could be many more. These can't be forcibly upgrades and are not eligible for a free upgrade of any kind. Those users will need to pay Microsoft for a 12-month security update extension or will be left open to attack. That Windows 10 deadline is October 14. Microsoft and PC OEMS are pushing hard for those 240 million users — and plenty of those with eligible devices as well — to buy new Copilot PCs. This is all about 'securing your future' the company warns PC owners.

In a bold step toward making quantum computing accessible enough to solve everyday problems, the Canadian city of Lethbridge has launched a first-of-its-kind community-based Quantum Super Hub. This new facility is being hailed as the 'ChatGPT of quantum computing'. Similar to how ChatGPT made AI easy to use, the new hub brings the power of quantum computing and other high-powered tools like AI and GPUs within reach of local businesses, students, and researchers. "By anchoring Canada's first Super Hub at Tecconnect, we're giving local innovators the tools to solve global problems—from agri-tech to logistics—with computing power once thought to be years away," said Renae Barlow, vice president of Economic Development Lethbridge (EDL), a not-for-profit organization involved in the development of Quantum Super Hub,. The main highlight of the quantum super hub is that anyone can describe a problem in plain language, and the system automatically decides whether to solve it using quantum computing, AI, or traditional supercomputers. 'The whole value proposition for the super platform is that it leverages a combination of classical and quantum hardware. It uses Nvidia GPUs, it uses quantum parts, it uses gate-based quantum machines, it uses classical CPUs, and GPUs. It figures out how to best solve the problem using a combination of these architectures," said Muhammad Khan, CEO of SuperQ Quantum Computing, the company that developed the hub. The development is being seen as a major leap as quantum computers, while powerful, have traditionally been out of reach for most people and companies. This is because they require expensive lab setups, highly trained quantum scientists, and complex programming skills. What the Super Quantum Hub does differently is simplify the user experience while intelligently picking the right computing strategy—sometimes quantum, sometimes classical, often both. It's this combination that makes it powerful and accessible. On top of the tech, a formidable support system has been put in place to help users. According to the SuperQ team, local businesses can get help at every step—from identifying key problems to testing solutions and receiving training. Moreover, workshops, pilot programs, and various other opportunities from the University of Lethbridge and Lethbridge Polytechnic are being offered to make sure people, researchers, and businesses benefit from the hub. "There are going to be students coming from the University of Lethbridge and Lethbridge Polytechnic who are going to have the opportunity to immerse a little further in these technologies, and also, there's new initiatives propping up as we move forward. Even the access for researchers is a very exciting proposition with the hub being open now," Eyren Uggenti, who leads professional services at SuperQ, added. The implications of this new hub are huge. Until now, quantum computing has been a distant dream for most industries. With this new model, companies in fields like precision agriculture, agri-tech, logistics, manufacturing, and finance can actually use quantum-level power to solve problems that are too complex or time-consuming. For instance, they can model climate risk in real time, simulate complex supply chains, or optimize energy use in manufacturing processes. Additionally, quantum hardware remains expensive and specialized. This is why the new hybrid model, where quantum is used only when needed, proves important. It allows industries to start benefiting from quantum power today without waiting for the technology to fully mature. Looking ahead, if the Lethbridge Super Quantum Hub proves successful, SuperQ plans to expand, with the next hub expected to open in the United Arab Emirates. The hope is that this model will unlock access to quantum computing worldwide.

Like most people, I used to rely on my phone's built-in notes app for everything: grocery lists, lists for the kids, random reminders and half-finished ideas. This resulted in something that felt like a cluttered digital junk drawer filled with hundreds of notes. Many titled 'List,' 'Another list' or simply untiled and left to the default 'New list.' But when ChatGPT rolled out memory and the latest Projects upgrade, I decided to test a new approach and completely replaced my notes app with ChatGPT. The hope was that AI could help me stay more organized After a few weeks of testing, here's what I've learned and, how I now use ChatGPT to manage everything from errands to creative projects. The first thing I noticed: ChatGPT is great at capturing messy thoughts; no formatting or full sentences required. I can simply say: Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. Instead of dozens of disconnected notes, ChatGPT stores everything in context, and remembers related details when I need them. The Projects feature is key. Instead of one giant 'Vacation' note, I now have actual projects where I can upload documents, add ideas and chat with ChatGPT to refine plans: Travel project: flight details, hotel info, sightseeing ideas Work project: article pitches, interview notes, outlines Meal planning: recipes to try, weekly grocery lists Since ChatGPT remembers previous conversations, I can jump back into any project and it picks up right where we left off; unlike my old notes app, which always felt disconnected. While ChatGPT doesn't yet sync with my calendar, it's surprisingly useful for soft reminders and planning my day. For example: ChatGPT will break the list down by priority and suggest when to tackle each task. I can even set a reminder within ChatGPT Tasks. Sometimes that gentle nudge is exactly what I need to stay focused. Here's what surprised me most: I actually take fewer notes now, but better ones. Quality over quantity, because instead of dumping every stray thought into a note, I now have interactive conversations with ChatGPT that help clarify what I really need. It's a smarter, more thoughtful way to process information, and much easier to search later. Besides staying more organized, it's also helped me check off more on each of my lists. I've started and completed more projects now that they are organized efficiently. Can ChatGPT fully replace my notes app? For quick reminders, brainstorming and project planning — absolutely. For calendar events and time-sensitive alerts? Not quite yet. But for the first time in years, I feel far more organized, and my thoughts feel less chaotic. I'm spending more time acting on ideas instead of digging through random lists, which feels like a big win.
