Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappé hospitalized with acute gastroenteritis after missing Club World Cup opener
Kylian Mbappé missed Real Madrid's Club World Cup opener Wednesday due to an illness, but the team did not provide any additional details on his status. On Thursday, Real Madrid announced Mbappé was hospitalized due to acute gastroenteritis.
The 26-year-old star reportedly started feeling symptoms Monday and missed the team's practice Tuesday. Despite that, the team left the door open for Mbappé to play Wednesday if he felt better. Real Madrid head coach Xabi Alonso said Tuesday the team would "wait until the last minute" to make a decision on Mbappé.

Following Wednesday's contest, a 1-1 draw against Al-Hilal, Alonso seemed to confirm Mbappé's illness was worse than expected. Alonso said after the game that he was unsure whether Mbappé would be available for Sunday's game against Pachuca.

The Argentine superstar found the top corner with a second half set-piece to clinch a surprise victory for the MLS side and give them a strong chance of progressing from Group A. Advertisement Inter Miami and Palmeiras have four points each, after the Brazilian side beat Al Ahly 2-0 earlier on -- the Egyptians like Porto have one point. Samu Aghehowa's early penalty gave the Portuguese side the lead as they had the better of the first half and could have scored more. However Telasco Segovia blasted Miami level and then Messi's free-kick helped them claim a noteworthy scalp, in a match many thought would be straightforward for Porto. Co-owned by former England international David Beckham, Inter Miami played their first MLS match in 2020 and signed Messi in 2023, raising their profile significantly. Advertisement This was the first competitive victory for an MLS side over European opposition, in their second encounter after Chelsea beat Los Angeles FC earlier in the week.
