Daesh cell ‘planning attacks' held in Damascus
DAMASCUS: Syrian security forces arrested armed members of a Daesh cell near Damascus on Monday accused of preparing attacks against the country.
The gang were carrying 'light, medium and heavy weaponry' and 'explosive devices and suicide vests they were planning to use to destabilize security and stability,' the Interior Ministry said.
The operation follows a similar incident this month in the northern city of Aleppo in which a security forces officer and three Daesh members were killed.
Once in control of swaths of Syria and Iraq, Daesh were territorially defeated in Syria in 2019 largely due to the efforts of Kurdish-led forces supported by an international coalition. But the group have continued to carry out attacks, particularly against Kurdish-led forces in northeastern Syria.
During his meeting with Syrian President Ahmad Al-Sharaa in Riyadh this month, US President Donald Trump called on him to 'help the US to prevent to resurgence' of Daesh, the White House said.
Meanwhie, Syria's Kurds will insist on decentralized government in forthcoming talks with the new authorities in Damascus, Kurdish official Badran Ciya Kurd said. The Kurdish-led administration signed an agreement in March to integrate into Syria's state institutions.

Pakistan to Nominate Trump for Nobel Peace Prize
Pakistan said on Saturday it would recommend US President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, an accolade that he has said he craves, for his work in helping to resolve the recent conflict between India and Pakistan. Some analysts in Pakistan said the move might persuade Trump to think again about potentially joining Israel in striking Iran's nuclear facilities. Pakistan has condemned Israel's action as a violation of international law and a threat to regional stability. In May, a surprise announcement by Trump of a ceasefire brought an abrupt end to a four-day conflict between nuclear-armed foes India and Pakistan. Trump has since repeatedly said that he averted a nuclear war, saved millions of lives, and grumbled that he got no credit for it. Pakistan agrees that US diplomatic intervention ended the fighting, but India says it was a bilateral agreement between the two militaries. "President Trump demonstrated great strategic foresight and stellar statesmanship through robust diplomatic engagement with both Islamabad and New Delhi, which de-escalated a rapidly deteriorating situation," Pakistan said. Mushahid Hussain, a former chair of the Senate Defense Committee in Pakistan's parliament, suggested nominating Trump for the peace prize was justified. "Trump is good for Pakistan," he said. "If this panders to Trump's ego, so be it. All the European leaders have been sucking up to him big time."

Suicide bomber kills at least 10 in a restaurant in northeast Nigeria
ABUJA: A suicide bomber in Nigeria's northeast state of Borno killed at least 10 people and injured several others in an explosion in a restaurant, police said Saturday. The blast occurred in the Konduga area late Friday, police spokesperson Nahum Daso told The Associated Press. The suicide bomber was able to slip through unnoticed because of a heavy downpour, said Ismail Ahmed, a resident of Konduga. The town is about 30 kilometers (20 miles) from Maiduguri, the capital of Borno state. Local media reported that those injured in the attacks have been taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. They also reported that the bomber was female. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, but Nigeria's northeast has been hit by attacks carried out by Islamic militants from the Boko Haram group and its splinter, the Daesh West Africa Province. Boko Haram, Nigeria's homegrown militants, took up arms in 2009 to fight Western education and impose their radical version of Islamic law. The conflict also has spilled into Nigeria's northern neighbors.
