The Lanarkshire side went with a left-field appointment - only for Michael Wimmer to walk out on the club after just 12 games - and have done so again.
We told you how Central Coast Mariners boss Mark Jackson was a name in the frame, with former Rangers star Charlie Adam also linked with the post.
But Askou said: 'This is a really proud moment for me.
'It's a huge honour to be selected to become the manager of Motherwell Football Club.
"Having spoken extensively with members of the club board, it was clear from the outset that our ideas, ambitions and morals align.
'We are all ambitious people, and we're all hungry for success. I can't wait to arrive in Scotland and begin planning for the season ahead. There is a lot of work to be done, but it's highly exciting.'
Before joining Danish second-tier club Vendsyssel, Askou served as a player-assistant manager at both Skive and Thisted.
He later took on the role of manager at Vendsyssel, where he got the club promoted to the Danish top-flight, before relocating to the Faroe Islands in 2019 to manage HB Tórshavn.
During his first season with HB Tórshavn, Askou celebrated more managerial silverware, securing both the Faroese league title and the league cup, achieving a remarkable double.
His impressive performance earned him the title of Manager of the Season in the Faroe Islands.
Michael Wimmer set to QUIT Motherwell for new job after just TWELVE games as Scottish Premiership side left stunned
After Tórshavn, Askou joined Danish club AC Horsens in 2021. Over the course of two seasons, he successfully guided the team back to Denmark's top division, his second promotion as a manager.
In 2023, he made the transition to Sweden, taking the helm at IFK Göteborg in the Allsvenskan.
Shortly after his arrival, he earned two Manager of the Month awards before he moved on to pastures new the following summer.
Askou took on the role of assistant manager at Czech club Sparta Praha, where he spent six months and played a key role in leading the team to the league phase of the Champions League.
In January 2025, he joined FC København as assistant manager, where he reached the knockout stages of the Europa Conference League but also secured the domestic double by winning both the league and the cup.
Chairman Kyrk Macmillan said: 'This has been a more rigorous process to recruit our new manager due to the incredible number of applications for the role."
'We had a high number of impressive applicants, but we were really drawn to Jens.
"His track record of working with big clubs, delivering success and developing young players matches up with all our philosophies here at Motherwell Football Club.
"He has handed 26 teenagers debuts in five-and-a-half seasons, which I think is evidence of Jens implementing his ideas and morals.
'The data and numbers impressed us, but more importantly, after speaking with Jens a number of times, he is a really ambitious character and a leader who was extremely keen to get the role here at our club.
'We expect the UK work permit to be received in the coming days, and then he can commence his work on Day 1 of pre-season.'
Shocked fans took to social media to express their surprise, with one saying simply: "Who?"

McCoist names the Celtic transfer that would 'hurt' Rangers

The Irish striker is out of favour at Brighton and Hove Albion after an unsuccessful loan spell at West Ham United last season. Ferguson burst onto the scene on the south coast in the 2022/23 campaign, across which he scored 10 goals in 25 games. Read more: His future is currently up in the air, and several pundits have mentioned Celtic as potential suitors. McCoist thinks Ferguson joining the Parkhead club would 'hurt' Rangers: "I'm a fan," he said [Scottish Sun]. "I want him to get fit. I really like Evan Ferguson, and I really want him to get fit and stay fit. "He can finish. Out of all the younger ones coming through, I thought Evan Ferguson was the one to watch. 'Obviously, he's got one or two injuries going on that have held him back a bit, but if he keeps himself fit, he will score goals anywhere. "The unfortunate thing for my mob [Rangers] is, he could come in and hurt us. Definitely. "It wouldn't surprise me at all. I'm a big fan." Shay Given, who spent time at Celtic as a teenager, thinks the striker would be a 'perfect' fit for the Scottish Premiership champions: "Evan just needs to find a home, if I'm being honest," he said last week. "Be it here [at Celtic] or somewhere else. He needs someone to say, 'You're my player.' "He went to West Ham for Graham Potter and you thought that was the perfect fit because Graham had him at Brighton. But then he didn't play so much at West Ham either. "Michail Antonio and someone else was injured, yet they played Jarrod Bowen and Mohammed Kudus - not Ferguson. What happens next for Evan? "I just think he needs to go, be it a loan for a season or some club buys him, and you build the team around him. I think he's a top player, I really do. "I did some Malaysian TV recently with Bobby Zamora and he goes into Brighton once a week and coaches the strikers. Bobby said Evan was the best finisher at the club. "Maybe because he burst onto the scene that everyone's been expecting so much so soon. But again, with young players, you need to have a bit of time. "I just feel he's ready now to burst onto the scene for a full season with somebody. For us, with Ireland, it would be great too. "I don't know if the finances would be to buy him, but if you said for a loan for the season, it would be perfect. But I'm not the financial power at Celtic or Newcastle, so I don't know!"

Watch as Celtic-linked defender scores first J-League goal

The Herald revealed last week that the Scottish Premiership champions are working on a deal for the 23-year-old, who primarily plays as a left-sided centre-back but can also provide cover at left full-back. Read more: His team travelled to face Avispa Fukuoka in the Japanese top flight this weekend, and although they eventually lost by three goals to two, Inamura opened the scoring four minutes in with an emphatic strike: Hayato Inamura scored for Albirex Niigata a moment ago. — Yuri (@yurixlax) June 21, 2025 It was the defender's first goal of his senior football career. After a potential move for Inamura emerged last week, it has since been reported that Celtic are interested in another J-League talent. Indeed, The Scottish Sun reports that the Parkhead club, along with a host of other European sides, have watched Kawasaki Frontale striker Shin Yamada ahead of a potential summer move. The 25-year-old scored 19 times in the Japanese top flight last season and helped his side reach the final of the AFC Champions League, where they eventually lost out to Saudi Arabian side Al-Ahli. He is rated at around the £1.5m mark. The J-League has been a well-utilised market by Celtic in recent years, with Reo Hatate, Daizen Maeda and Kyogo Furuhashi all excelling during their time in Scotland.

A beautiful counter left hook from Norman Jr connected flush on the 23-year-old's jaw and sent him hurtling towards the canvas. The back of Sasaki's head smacked off the canvas and medical staff promptly tended to him after the referee issued the most pointless of counts. He was worryingly motionless for over a minute before being stretchered out of the arena and rushed to the hospital, where he underwent a slew of neurological tests. Thankfully, the scans showed he had no serious injury to his brain and he was released the same day. But the knockout, according to the president of his gym, Issei Nakaya, wiped his memory of the last few weeks. According to Nakaya, Sasaki told him: "I don't even remember that this title match was decided." A statement on Sasaki's condition read: "Sasaki Tsutomu was taken to the hospital after the match and underwent a CT scan. 4 Jin Sasaki was transported to the hospital but discharged the same day after scans found he had no neurological issues or brain injuries Credit: GETTY "There were no injuries such as bleeding. However, he hit the back of his head hard and is currently losing his memory. "There were no visible physical injuries, but we will be keeping an eye on him and he will be going back to the hospital tomorrow for another checkup." Canelo Alvarez reveals why Terence Crawford is BETTER than Floyd Mayweather... but vows to learn from infamous loss Defeat to Norman Jr was only the second of Sasaki's career.
