FROM local manufacturing roots to global impact, Kooka Papers Manufacturing Sdn Bhd (Kooka) has redefined tissue exports with strategy, simplicity and resilience.
Kooka's marked a significant milestone in history 25 years ago when it sealed and shipped its first export container of tissue paper products to the port.
At that time, the company took its first step beyond Malaysia, even if it was only on an ad hoc basis. However, exporting tissue products has always been a challenging endeavour.
Despite these obstacles, Kooka has spent the last 25 years refining and evolving its business strategies to expand and secure a place in the global market.
This progress is largely thanks to the strategic vision of its chairman, who emphasised two key principles, in-depth development and simplification.
Today, Kooka exports approximately 10 containers every day, surpassing 3,500 containers annually, thanks to its team of dedicated employees – and poised to exceed 6,000 containers in the near future.
Its primary market is North America, followed by Australia and New Zealand. The products also have a strong presence in Japan, South Korea and Middle Eastern nations. The company is also looking at expanding its presence in Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore.
Kooka is targeting high double-digit growth year over year. Fuelled by this growth, the company aspires to become the largest tissue product manufacturer in Malaysia, while continuing to build a reputation for excellence and being a reliable tissue supplier for napkins, towels, toilet tissues and facial tissues in the global market.

Switzerland lifts economic sanctions on Syria

After the toppling of former Syrian president Bashar al-Assad in December 2024, targeted sanctions against individuals and entities linked to the former government will still remain in place, Switzerland's governing Federal Council said. "The aim of this decision is to promote the country's economic recovery and an inclusive and peaceful political transition," the council said in a statement. After an initial easing of sanctions in March, Switzerland is now lifting restrictions on the provision of certain financial services, trade in precious metals and the export of luxury goods, the government said. Some 24 entities including the central bank of Syria have also been removed from the sanctions list, it added. The announcement follows the EU's decision to lift its economic sanctions on Syria at the end of May after a similar move by the U.S. Treasury Department in the same month. Middle East conflict poses limited direct risk to Malaysia
KUALA LUMPUR: The ongoing tensions in the Middle East are unlikely to pose a significant threat to Malaysia's economy due to its minimal direct trade exposure to the region, according to CIMB Securities. The firm said only 2.2 per cent of Malaysia's total trade is with Middle Eastern economies, while trade with Iran, the central player in the current conflict, accounts for a negligible 0.09 per cent. "Malaysia's direct trade exposure to the Middle East remains small. This significantly limits the immediate downside risk to exports or broader trade flows, even if geopolitical tensions escalate," it said in a research note. The conflict between Iran and Israel, which has raised concerns over global oil supply security, has pushed up crude prices in recent weeks. However, CIMB Securities noted that previous episodes of Middle East-linked oil price surges have tended to be short-lived. It added that Malaysia, as a net exporter of crude oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG), could even see a modest trade benefit in the short term if prices remain elevated. "In the near term, Malaysia may benefit from improved terms of trade as higher oil and LNG prices support export earnings, which in turn would bolster the trade surplus and current account balance," it said. Despite this, the potential benefit may be partly offset by higher costs for imported refined fuels such as diesel and petrol, which Malaysia continues to import to meet domestic demand. Rising freight rates and logistical bottlenecks, particularly those linked to disruptions in the Red Sea and Suez Canal, could further add to import costs. "Elevated logistics costs may translate into higher import prices, even if direct trade exposure is limited," the firm said. "However, unless a major supply shock materialises, such as the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, the impact on Malaysia's economy is expected to be limited and manageable," it added.
