George Russell wins Canadian Grand Prix as McLarens collide

MONTREAL – George Russell celebrated Mercedes' first win of the Formula One season in Canada on June 15 while McLaren's Oscar Piastri went 22 points clear in the championship after teammate Lando Norris smashed into him and retired.
Red Bull's Max Verstappen, who had hoped to win for a record fourth year in a row at Montreal's Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, had to settle for second after a challenge fizzed out behind the safety car.
Russell's 18-year-old rookie teammate Kimi Antonelli finished third for his first F1 podium and the first by an Italian since 2009.
Piastri was fourth, with the safety car leading the final lap before peeling off to clear the way for Russell to take the chequered flag.
'Well done team. That made up for last year,' said Russell, who also started on pole in 2024 but finished third. His last win before June 15 was in Las Vegas in November.
'It's amazing to be back on the top step. I felt last year was a victory lost and probably got the victory today due to the incredible pole lap yesterday.'
Piastri now has 198 points ahead of Norris on 176, with Verstappen on 155 with Russell on 136.
In the constructors' standings, Mercedes moved up to second, ahead of Ferrari and 175 points behind McLaren.
An uneventful afternoon erupted in headline drama when Norris hit the rear of Piastri's car three laps from the end – a clash long predicted in the title battle between the pair – while trying to overtake.
The Briton, whose broken car stopped by the side of the track, was quick to blame himself when it all went wrong after they had earlier gone side by side.
'I'm sorry. All my bad. All my fault. Stupid from me,' Norris said over the team radio.
Piastri pitted as the safety car was deployed and rejoined with a tyre advantage over Antonelli that he could not use as the racing never resumed.
'Glad I didn't ruin his race. In the end apologies to the team,' Norris told Sky Sports television. 'This wasn't even like a 'that's racing', it was just silly from my part.'
Stewards ruled he was solely to blame and handed him a meaningless five-second penalty.
Ferrari's Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton finished fifth and sixth, the latter with a damaged car after hitting a groundhog.

Fernando Alonso was seventh for Aston Martin and Nico Hulkenberg brought in more solid points for Sauber in eighth place. Esteban Ocon was ninth for Haas in their 200th race with Carlos Sainz 10th for Williams.
A post-race protest by Red Bull was rejected by stewards five and a half hours after the race ended.
They had argued Russell breached the rules by driving erratically when the safety car was deployed in the final laps of the race and also showed unsportsmanlike conduct.
While Russell and Verstappen are not friends and have clashed on the track, notably in Spain two weeks ago when Red Bull's four-times world champion was heavily punished, team boss Christian Horner said it was not personal.
Red Bull have, however, protested twice in the space of five races now, both times against Russell.
Third place, after passing Piastri on the opening lap, made Antonelli the third-youngest driver ever to stand on the F1 podium.
'I was just hoping for the race to finish, to be honest,' he said.
'I had a good start. I managed to jump into P3 and I just stayed up there at the front. The last stint, I pushed a bit too hard behind Max and I killed a bit of the front left tyre and then I struggled a bit at the end.'
Russell led away cleanly from pole, with Verstappen slotting in behind.
Behind them, Williams' Alex Albon tracked across the grass after starting ninth, with Alpine's Franco Colapinto moving briefly up from 10th before losing out to Hulkenberg and then falling down the order.
Norris started on the hard tyres to go longer in the opening stint and was leading by lap 16 after others who started on mediums came in for pitstops. He then pitted on lap 29 and came out fifth, behind Piastri in fourth.
Leclerc also came in on that lap but then questioned why Ferrari had made the call, with his hard tyres still in reasonable shape.

PHOTO: REUTERS NEW YORK – Tesla is rolling out its first robotaxis on the streets of Austin, Texas, after almost a decade of hype from Mr Elon Musk, kicking off a precarious new era for the carmaker. The launch of a driverless taxi service on June 22 is set to begin modestly, with a handful of vehicles in limited areas of the city. Tesla hand-picked initial riders who are expected to offer feedback on the experience, so the general public will still have to wait. The low-key rollout has nonetheless been highly anticipated by investors, who are counting on the new business line to revive a company battered by flagging sales and a consumer backlash against Mr Musk. The Tesla chief executive is betting the company's future on autonomous driving, artificial intelligence and humanoid robots – buzzy but still largely unproven markets. 'This is the first true test,' Mr Gene Munster, managing partner of Deepwater Asset Management, said in an interview. 'Anything that happens will be amplified, especially the negative. There's a lot at stake.' Tesla has ramped up testing recently in the Texas state capital, where Model Y SUVs with manufacturer plates have been spotted regularly in the south and southeast portions of the city. Mr Musk recently promoted a video on social media of one of its vehicles driving in Austin with nobody behind the wheel. Some details of the launch emerged in recent days after several social-media users – known for promoting Tesla – revealed that they were selected for early access to a new robotaxi app and the ride-hailing service. According to the use parameters posted by one account, robotaxis will be available between 6 a.m. and midnight every day within unspecified geofenced areas of the city, not including the airport. The service may be limited or unavailable in foul weather. A 'safety monitor' will be sitting in the front passenger seat for rides during the early access period. Mr Musk has said Tesla would initially roll out 10 to 20 vehicles before expanding to a thousand within a few months, and later introducing a purpose-built Cybercab with no pedals or steering wheel. The CEO has a history of overpromising in the area of autonomy. After hinting at the possibility of an autonomous-car service in a business plan in 2016, he said three years later that Tesla customers would be able to utilize their vehicles as robotaxis by 2020. Tesla has long offered a system called Full Self Driving that, despite the name, requires continual driver supervision and doesn't make vehicles autonomous. The company has said it will operate its robotaxi network using an 'unsupervised' version of the software that will not require a human driver to monitor. Safety is a crucial factor in driverless car operations. Incidents that injure or kill people can bring regulatory crackdowns and negative attention to companies. Cruise, the now-defunct autonomy business of General Motors Co., grounded its fleet in late 2023 and had its operating license suspended in California following an accident that injured a pedestrian. Uber Technologies Inc. ceased testing self-driving vehicles after one of its SUVs struck and killed a pedestrian in Arizona in 2018. Less than three years later, the company agreed to sell its self-driving business. Austin has become a hot spot for autonomous vehicle operations. Waymo, which is owned by Google parent Alphabet Inc., is scaling up in the city through a partnership with Uber. Inc.'s Zoox is also testing there. In Texas, Tesla faces few restrictions to operate autonomous vehicles. Driverless vehicles are required to be equipped with cameras, have insurance and follow traffic rules. A rideshare license in not currently required. At the federal level, authorities are taking steps to ease the deployment of autonomous vehicles without driver controls like steering wheels or pedals. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said this month that it will streamline the process to get an exemption for such vehicles, which under current policy has resulted in lengthy processing times that can last years. MC Alger said one of their supporters had died in the incident at the 5 July Stadium in capital Algiers, with Algerian president Abdelmadjid Tebboune offering his condolences and wishing a speedy recovery for the injured. "It is with great sadness and sorrow and with hearts that we received the news of our supporter Younes Amguzzi, who passed away after falling from the upper stands," MC Alger said in an Instagram post. Local media reports said the spectators fell after a fence in the upper stand broke, with El Heddaf TV's Facebook page posting a video showing part of a railing collapsed into the lower tier. The injured spectators were rushed to hospital, where MC Alger players, staff and administrators also went to donate blood as the trophy presentation ceremony was postponed, the reports added. 'I think the conditions make it so difficult, especially for us being a European team. They (Sundowns) played a fantastic game but I'm sure they're used to this kind of weather, but we definitely aren't. 'But it's something we are going to have to adapt to as the tournament goes on.' Bellingham said he was happy to be playing so soon after signing a five-year deal for what reports said was a 33 million euros ($37.70 million) deal. 'The lads have really helped me settle in and it's been a different experience because rather than signing and then having a summer off, I've got an opportunity to meet everyone and get to grips with how we play and how the coach wants us to play as a team.' Coach Niko Kovac said he was delighted with the form of Bellingham. 'He is among those who are the future of this club,' the Dortmund boss said.
