Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 confirmed to launch with AI-powered triple camera setup

India Today11-06-2025

In the spirit of drip-feeding information to hype up its next batch of foldable smartphones, Samsung today revealed the camera specs of the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 7. Sort of. Well, it's not the exact spec meaning megapixels and all that stuff, but what this camera setup can do. Not that it's a big surprise or anything, but the Galaxy Z Fold 7's camera has AI built into it in some capacity, which will seemingly allow it to be more intelligent than its predecessor models.advertisementSamsung doesn't say it in so many words, but it uses AI jargon like multimodal understanding to highlight the Galaxy Z Fold 7 will be able to 'get what you're looking at and respond to situations' through its cameras, hinting at the possibility of advanced visual search/intelligence, which we have seen recently on iPhones. Recent iPhones, in fact, even have a dedicated camera control button now which doubles as a quick shortcut key for visual intelligence. The idea is to basically put search directly into the camera (app) so users can simply point it at a thing and get more information about it on the fly. It isn't immediately clear if Samsung is also putting a dedicated button for it on the Galaxy Z Fold 7.'As AI evolves from text-based prompts to multimodal understanding, Galaxy devices are becoming smarter - able to get what you're looking at and respond to situations. The camera is at the heart of this transformation,' Samsung says, adding that 'More than just a tool for capturing images, coupled with enhanced AI-powered features, the Galaxy camera is now part of the intuitive interface that turns what users see into understanding and action.'What's confirmed is that the Galaxy Z Fold 7 has a total of three cameras on the back, a similar count to the existing Galaxy Z Fold 6. It is widely reported that the primary camera would use an upgraded 200-megapixel sensor, quite possibly the same as the Galaxy S25 Ultra and Galaxy S25 Edge. The other two cameras are expected to be a do-over from the Galaxy Z Fold 6.
Elsewhere, Samsung has confirmed that the Galaxy Z Fold 7 is its thinnest and most durable foldable phone, though it hasn't yet shared the technical details. Given that it has the ultra-thin Galaxy S25 Edge in its portfolio now, expectations would obviously be sky-high about where things might go from here, especially given that Huawei and Honor have shown it is possible to make razor-thin foldables for the mass-market without compromising on specs. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 is widely expected to launch in July alongside the Galaxy Z Flip 7 and the Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE.

Apple eyes Perplexity acquisition? What's at stake for Google, Samsung

Apple is reportedly exploring a potential acquisition of Perplexity AI, the US-based AI start-up. According to a recent Bloomberg report, Apple executives, including mergers and acquisitions head Adrian Perica, services chief Eddy Cue, and key decision-makers in AI, have held internal discussions about making a bid for the company. While there has been no confirmation from Apple, Perplexity told Bloomberg, 'We have no knowledge of any current or future M&A discussions involving Perplexity.' If Apple proceeds, the deal could give it a much-needed boost in AI talent, an established brand in the generative AI space, and a consumer-facing product. However, ongoing deals between Perplexity and other tech companies, notably Samsung and Motorola, could complicate the process. Bloomberg also reported that Meta attempted to buy Perplexity earlier this year. Here's a breakdown of what an Apple-Perplexity deal could mean for the companies involved: What Apple stands to gain from the Perplexity AI acquisition? A Perplexity acquisition would support Apple's efforts to develop its own AI-based search engine, a strategic move amid growing uncertainty around its lucrative deal with Google. Bloomberg reported that Apple currently earns an estimated $20 billion a year by making Google the default search engine in Safari, but that agreement is under scrutiny from US antitrust regulators. The potential acquisition also reflects Apple's wider push to catch up in the generative AI race. Despite unveiling its Apple Intelligence platform at WWDC 2024, the company remains behind competitors in core features. Siri's planned upgrade was even delayed earlier this year, with a revised rollout now targeted for next spring. By bringing Perplexity in-house, Apple would not only gain a robust AI product but also absorb a skilled team already working at the forefront of AI-powered search. The acquisition could further accelerate the development of next-gen Apple Intelligence capabilities. Samsung and Motorola partnerships at risk? Bloomberg previously reported that Samsung Electronics is close to finalising a major partnership with Perplexity. This would include preloading Perplexity's assistant and app onto Samsung devices and integrating its search technology into Samsung's native web browser. Talks have also involved incorporating Perplexity into Samsung's own voice assistant, Bixby. Samsung is reportedly aiming to announce these integrations as early as this year, potentially making Perplexity a default assistant option on its upcoming Galaxy S26 series. The South Korean giant is also expected to be a major participant in Perplexity's next funding round. Motorola already has an active partnership with Perplexity. On select Motorola smartphones, including the Edge 60 Pro, users can choose between Perplexity AI, Google Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot as their default assistant. While there is no indication yet that these partnerships are under threat, they could present a hurdle if Apple moves ahead with an acquisition. Bloomberg also noted that Apple is weighing an alternative: partnering with Perplexity rather than acquiring it outright. Such a deal would involve integrating Perplexity's AI search into Safari and possibly into Siri as an additional intelligence layer. What Apple Perplexity AI Deal could mean for Google An Apple-Perplexity alliance, whether through acquisition or partnership, would be a clear challenge to Google's dominance on iOS devices. For now, Google Search remains the default on Safari, but a Perplexity-powered alternative could alter the balance of power, particularly if antitrust regulators force changes to the current arrangement. Separately, Perplexity's growing relationship with Samsung is another potential concern for Google. Although Google's Gemini AI is already integrated into Samsung's Galaxy devices, including being set as the default assistant, Samsung's collaboration with Perplexity suggests a shift toward diversifying its AI offerings. If Samsung deepens its partnership with Perplexity, it could mark a strategic move away from sole reliance on Google and toward supporting a broader AI ecosystem.

Apple iOS 26 adds AI-powered battery saving feature, but only for select iPhone users

Despite all the hype — on the surface, the iOS 26 software build seems more like an evolutionary upgrade rather than a revolutionary one, with Apple going all-in on its touted Liquid Glass design. However, beyond the new design language, there are a plethora of under-the-hood changes and additions that make iOS 26 an important update, one of them being the Adaptive Power feature under Power Mode — an AI-powered battery-saving tool for select iPhones. Yes, you read that right, only specific iPhones support this new feature on iOS 26, including the iPhone 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max, iPhone 16, 16 Pro, 16 Pro Max and 16e. As reported by MacRumors, iPhones that have Apple Intelligence gain access to the new Adaptive Power Power makes subtle performance adjustments to extend your iPhone's battery life. According to Apple's official description, 'When your battery usage is higher than usual, iPhone can make small performance adjustments to extend your battery life, including slightly lowering the display brightness or allowing some activities to take a little longer. Low Power Mode may turn on at 20 per cent.'While iPhones as old as the iPhone 11 are eligible for the iOS 26 update, the Adaptive Power feature requires Apple Intelligence, which is why it's supported on the iPhone 15 Pro but not on the regular iPhone 15, despite both being part of the same series. The MacRumors report also mentions how this feature could prove useful for the upcoming iPhone 17 Air. And why wouldn't it be, considering the upcoming phone is expected to be the slimmest iPhone ever — even slimmer than the recently launched Galaxy S25 Edge — at just 5.5mm thick. Of course, achieving such a slim profile means Apple will have to make compromises, and rumour has it that the 17 Air will house a battery of around 2,800mAh. With such a modest capacity, the phone will likely need every battery-saving feature available to strike the right balance between strong performance and reliable battery how much Adaptive Power helps the iPhone 17 Air in delivering good endurance remains to be seen. For now, all eyes are on September, when Apple is expected to launch the iPhone 17 series, including the standard iPhone 17, 17 Pro, 17 Pro Max and 17 Air. The iOS 26 software, currently available as a developer beta, will also roll out in its stable form alongside the new iPhones.
