Lucid Prepares Next Wave Of EVs As Trademarks Signal Product Expansion
Several new trademarks have revealed the possible names for Lucid's next models, as the company looks to expand its lineup beyond the full-size Air sedan and Gravity three-row SUV. Considering Lucid already occupies these segments, these future models should hopefully be more affordable, giving the brand higher-volume alternatives to the Tesla Model 3 and Tesla Model Y. The brand has, after all, already teased a midsize SUV and confirmed a Model Y competitor. Here's a look at all the latest Lucid trademarks.
The Lucid Earth trademark already popped up a few weeks ago, and it has since been confirmed that this will be a new smaller EV. It's set to go into production in 2026, when it should compete head-on with the Tesla Model Y.
The newest trademark is for an Earth Dream Edition, filed with the European Union Intellectual Property Office, adding further confirmation that this is a new Lucid production model. The brand's Dream Edition EVs are typically sold for a limited time after a new car is launched. They offer the best outputs and features, and also carry the highest prices.
A price of under $50,000 and a class-leading range are expected for this model, but the Dream Edition could cost more than this.
Another trademark, this time filed with the Government of Canada, is for the Lucid Ocean. If that name sounds familiar, you may be thinking of the Fisker Ocean SUV. However, Fisker's recent bankruptcy presumably means that the "Ocean" name is back up for grabs, and since it fits in thematically with other Lucid model names, it's a logical choice.
It's not known what vehicle the Ocean name could apply to, but a smaller sedan to slot in below the Air sounds like a logical move. It would give the brand a true BMW i5 and Mercedes-Benz EQE rival, leaving the Air to do battle with the i7 and EQS.
The last time "Lucid Space" was mentioned, it was by former Lucid CEO, Peter Rawlinson. However, he was specifically referring to the Lucid Space Concept, which doesn't refer to a particular model, but references one of the brand's philosophies. Rawlinson was explaining how Lucid cars free up an amount of interior space beyond the physical footprint of a given vehicle.
Once again, though, "Space" fits in well with other Lucid names like Gravity and Air, referencing the elements and/or the natural environment. Last year, Lucid ruled out a station wagon, but was open to the idea of a more rugged vehicle.
Given the brand's luxury focus, a classy coupe doesn't seem out of the question, but electric coupes are exceedingly rare. The word "Space" sounds applicable to something larger, but the Air and Gravity are already full-size models, so it's anyone's guess what this model could be.
While Lucid has not yet come close to toppling Tesla, it's doing what a lot of other EV startups couldn't: surviving. And, with only two high-end models on sale presently, the potential for growth is enormous if the brand launches two or more models that are more accessible.
The Earth is the only one that looks like a guarantee, but we can't wait to see the possibilities of the Ocean and Space nameplates.

Tesla stock posted modest gains in premarket trading on Monday following the long-awaited launch of its robotaxi services in Austin. The EV maker unveiled its robotaxi service on Sunday, giving small group of users in Austin access to the driverless rides for a flat $4.20 fee. Shares were more than 2% higher at almost $328 as of 8:55 a.m. ET. In a Monday note, analysts at UBS raised their target price on the stock by $25 to $215 while maintaining a "Sell" rating. While Tesla appears to be well positioned, we believe the opportunity is already priced into the stock," they wrote. "We built out our robotaxi model and believe the opportunity is worth ~$99/share, which when considering other parts of TSLA's business, still leaves us cautious on TSLA's overall valuation." Musk teased the launch of the robotaxi earlier this month, showcasing a driverless Tesla Model Y emblazoned with the Cybertruck-style branding. "Beautifully simple design," he posted on X. The rollout follows years of Musk promising multiple times that the robotaxi was just around the corner. Meanwhile, competitors such as Alphabet's Waymo have already demonstrated their autonomous taxis in multiple cities. Lawmakers in Texas have been seeking tighter regulation of robotaxis, while some technical hurdles remain unresolved. Tesla stock has struggled this year, shedding almost 15% as of Friday's close, amid declining vehicle sales.

Tesla officially launches robotaxis in Austin to a small group of users, charging a $4.20 flat fee per ride
On a balmy Sunday in Austin, Tesla fans awaited the promise of the future. After a few hours of delays, that promise finally came true, and a select group took their first rides, livestreaming their experience. While Tesla robotaxis are meant to be fully autonomous, Tesla employees were still present in the passenger seat of the cars for safety reasons. Earlier this month, Tesla CEO Elon Musk teased the launch of the robotaxi, a driverless Tesla Model Y emblazoned with its namesake in Cybertruck-style font. "Beautifully simple design," Musk wrote on X. "These are unmodified Tesla cars coming straight from the factory, meaning that every Tesla coming out of our factories is capable of unsupervised self-driving," he added. On Sunday, Musk said the first Tesla robotaxi rides would be available for a flat fee of $4.20. A small group of invited users was the first to try them out. Tesla fans buzzed on social media in the lead-up to the official launch, which was initially delayed as users awaited the release of the official Tesla robotaxi app. "We are approaching the window where we expected to have the app and showing everything," Chuck Cook, one of the early invitees to try the Tesla robotaxi, said on X. "There looks like there will be a small delay in the distribution of the app for couple hours." Tesla AI, the division behind the robotaxis, said Sunday on X that Tesla robotaxis will eventually be deployed anywhere they are approved and are designed for "scalability." "It does not require expensive, specialized equipment or extensive mapping of service areas. It just works," the company said. The company launched a website where users can sign up for early access when the service becomes available in their area. It also launched an X feed dedicated to Tesla robotaxis. With the launch of Tesla robotaxis, Austin continued to solidify itself as a new theater for Silicon Valley's race to shape the new age of driverless transportation. In March, Google-backed Waymo launched its autonomous ride-hailing service in partnership with Uber. Waabi, a Canadian startup backed by Uber and Nvidia, is set to launch fully autonomous trucks in Texas this year. I'm a retiree living in Mexico who owns a BYD and a Tesla. Here's why I prefer the Chinese car.
This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with John Romer, a retired radiologist from Huntsville, Alabama, about his BYD Song Plus hybrid and Tesla Model 3. It has been edited for length and clarity. I'm a 73-year-old former radiologist. I retired from practice in Huntsville, Alabama, nine years ago, after working there for 35 years. I retired to Florida, but after a while, my wife and I decided to move back to Alabama, where we bought a small home to be close to our children and grandchildren. But I'm pretty much living in Mexico most of the time now. I've been a resident for eight years, and I spend about nine months of the year in the country, going back to Alabama around four times a year to see family. Chinese cars have become extremely popular in Mexico, so when the time came to buy a new car, BYD was the logical choice. They've come in with a strong presence and have a number of dealerships scattered throughout the country. I test-drove a BYD Song Plus hybrid SUV back in early October and really liked it. I bought one for around 777,000 Pesos ($41,000), and it came in early November. I've had it for six or seven months, and it hasn't had a single issue. It's extremely efficient — I'm probably getting over 40 miles per gallon — and having a hybrid gives me the flexibility of being able to go wherever I want. I would have gone with a pure EV, but Mexico doesn't have the charging infrastructure yet that they have in Europe or the US, so I was more comfortable with the hybrid here. The Song is a very comfortable ride, and it also has a number of safety features that I like. It's very large, which can make it a bit difficult to drive, but it does have blind-spot warning and automatic front and rear braking if there's traffic that you haven't seen in front of you or behind you. Tesla vs. BYD Back home, I have a Tesla Model 3, which I bought two years ago for around the same price as I paid for the BYD Song Plus. I'm probably going to give it to my grandson, who's turning 16 next year. Comparing a hybrid to a fully-electric car is like comparing apples and oranges, but I do prefer the BYD to the Tesla. The Tesla has been a good car, but it is a little bit troublesome. When I'm in Alabama and I drive to see my daughter in Kentucky, I have to stop to recharge it. It's not a huge deal, but it's a little awkward. I'm almost sure that if I had a hybrid, I wouldn't have to stop. I also don't care for Tesla's 'Autopilot' mode at all. I update it regularly, but it has yet to perform the way I think it should. For instance, in my experience, it cannot handle traffic circles, and it struggles around construction work. [Tesla did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider.] I don't think it's ready for primetime yet. The BYD has a similar setup, which I'm yet to use. The infrastructure in Mexico is not good, and there's a lot of construction around my area, so I'm a bit wary about using it here. The Tesla is also not as well put together, in terms of the finish, as the BYD Song Plus. The BYD feels very solid, the interior is very well upholstered, and in my opinion, it has a better quality of construction than the Tesla. I'm a real tech person, and the BYD has all kinds of advanced technology. As well as a heads-up display and automatic lights, it's got a nice 3D model of the car on the display — Tesla has one too, but it's not as accurate as the BYD one, which is really helpful when parking and maneuvering the car. US drivers miss out BYDs are everywhere in Mexico, and their prices are very competitive. I'm planning to buy my wife the BYD electric Dolphin Mini. We were going to get a golf cart to use around the community where we live, but the golf cart costs about $13,000, and you have to spend about $1,500 every two years replacing batteries. The BYD Dolphin Mini is $21,000 and has an eight-year battery guarantee, so it gives you a lot more flexibility for only $3,000 to 4,000 more. I don't agree with the tariffs on Chinese EVs in the US. I've always believed in free trade. I'm very disappointed in the tariffs that Trump is imposing. I think competition is always good, it encourages the development of new technology and better quality products. I do think that if you can't compete in an industry, then you need to find another industry you can compete in and let things get sorted out, rather than trying to artificially encourage industries with tariffs, which only drives prices up.
