Tesla to open showrooms in July with Model Y
A 2025 Model Y Tesla vehicle is seen in a Tesla showroom in New York City on February 16, 2025. (Photo by CHARLY TRIBALLEAU / AFP) (AFP) Notify me Tesla Inc. is officially gearing up to enter the Indian automotive market, with plans to open its first showrooms in July 2025. According to sources close to the matter, the electric vehicle pioneer will debut its presence in Mumbai by mid-July, followed by a second showroom in New Delhi shortly after. This long-anticipated move will mark the company's formal entry into the world's third-largest car market. The American EV giant has begun importing its flagship Model Y rear-wheel drive SUVs from its Shanghai plant, signalling the start of its retail operations in India. Bloomberg News reviewed official import documents that confirm the arrival of at least five Model Y vehicles at the Mumbai port. These units were declared at ₹ 27.69 lakh (approx. $31,988), with over ₹ 21 lakh levied in import duties, reflecting India's high tariffs on completely built units. The Model Y was recently facelifted with an updated fascia, new hardware and features. The Model Y, recognized globally as the best-selling electric car, is expected to be priced above $56,000 in India before taxes and insurance. That's significantly higher than its U.S. price of $44,990, and even more when U.S. tax credits bring the price down to $37,490. This substantial price gap highlights one of Tesla's main challenges in India—convincing price-sensitive consumers to invest in a premium electric vehicle. Despite EVs making up just over 5 per cent of new passenger vehicle sales in India, the premium segment still remains under 2 per cent of the market. This presents a tough landscape for Tesla, which must carefully balance pricing, product positioning, and consumer appeal. Also Read : Tesla Model 3 and Model Y spotted without camouflage Tesla's India strategy has gained momentum following a meeting between CEO Elon Musk and Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier this year. While the company has yet to appoint a new country head following the departure of Prashanth Menon, it is actively hiring for roles in retail, charging infrastructure, and public policy. To support its operations, Tesla is also securing warehousing space in Karnataka and Gurugram. Furthermore, executives from international teams have been making regular visits to oversee preparations in the luxury business districts of Mumbai and New Delhi, where the first showrooms are being established. As Tesla makes its long-awaited Indian debut, the company is banking on its global brand appeal and premium technology to carve out space in a rapidly evolving but price-conscious market. Veteran Tesla analyst makes boldest robotaxi call yet
The closer we get to Tesla's (TSLA) robotaxi debut on Sunday, the hotter things get. Though it's been patchy, Tesla bulls would argue we're finally getting close to what could be a watershed moment for the business. Don't miss the move: Subscribe to TheStreet's free daily newsletter Analysts have been talking up Tesla's self-driving game for a while. Few have built a serious reputation on bold, on-point calls. Now, one veteran bull just upped the ante on the robotaxi event, calling this the potential start of Tesla's "golden era of autonomous." Truth be told, Tesla's robotaxi rollout turned out bumpier than expected. Related: Tesla robotaxi launch hits major speed bump After Tesla's maverick CEO, Elon Musk, teased an Austin debut in May, things have proven rather rocky. Just yesterday, a band of seven Texas lawmakers called on the EV giant to pump the brakes on its trials until September's tougher AV rules to kick in. Then there's the safety concern, which adds another layer to the dynamic. In mid-June, a Cybertruck prototype drifted into oncoming traffic while on FSD. Days later, a Tesla Model 3 stalled on train tracks, getting clipped in the process. These hurdles and fresh incidents suggest the vision-only autonomy might still be brittle. Meanwhile, Tesla's robotaxi competition in the likes of Waymo and Cruise continues chugging along in geofenced zones. These companies have taken a more cautious route with safety drivers and slow expansions. Tesla, on the other hand, appears to be going full throttle, relying heavily on its massive owner fleet and Musk's no-brakes style. For now, though, hiccups have weighed down Tesla's stock price, which has settled back into the low $320s. More Tesla Stock News: Tesla robotaxi launch hits major speed bumpMusk's AI chatbot weighs in on Tesla stock and RobotaxiSpaceX faces a surprising rival Tesla is already battling Nevertheless, Tesla has repeatedly proved the naysayers wrong, and it's operating in what could become a multi-billion-dollar market. Grand View Research estimates the global robotaxi market at $1.95 billion last year, potentially soaring to $43.76 billion by 2030 (a staggering 73.5% CAGR from 2025). In an X post today, the veteran tech analyst deemed Sunday's robotaxi rollout in Austin "the golden era of autonomous" for Tesla. Related: Journalists are 'killing people' by turning them against autonomous cars, Musk said He feels this chapter could be the biggest in Tesla's rich history, tipping its AI roadmap as a potential $1 trillion valuation boost over the coming years. To put things in perspective, that's double the stock's current worth at around $1.1 trillion. Ives sees the event as a high-stakes test of autonomy at scale. If the technology can effectively live up to the hype, investors could be looking at a paradigm shift in both ride-hailing and Tesla's market positioning. Even though the initial fleet may seem relatively modest (20 Model Ys), Ives believes a quick ramp to some 25 U.S. cities over the next year is possible. Moreover, he lauded Tesla's unmatched scale, including its massive fleet, global footprint, and deep data trove. Also, beyond operating its network, Ives feels Tesla could license its Full Self-Driving stack to traditional automotive players, opening up a huge, long-term revenue stream. Sure, there are likely to be some speed bumps. These include tricky regs, politics, and a race towards full autonomy. However, Ives still sees Tesla as having the competitive edge due to its software muscle, hardware control, and deep pockets. It's important to note that Dan Ives has been a Tesla bull for years, even through the rough patches. He's voiced his support for the stock, stating that his "longstanding bull view of Tesla remains". Wedbush maintains an 'Outperform' rating on Tesla stock with a lofty price target of $500. This target represents a whopping 55% upside to the stock's current price, which is hovering near the $321.3 mark. Keyless Entry is a Car-Thief's Dream: Is Yours on the List?
Car thieves have gone high-tech. In 2025, the same keyless entry systems that make life convenient for drivers have become a goldmine for criminals. Armed with cheap relay devices and a bit of know-how, thieves can capture and amplify your fob's signal-even if it's inside your house-and drive away in seconds. Recent academic research confirms: remote keyless entry is now a main attack vector, and most automakers haven't kept up with the threat. Attacks like relay, replay, and even cryptanalytic hacks let criminals bypass security on everything from family sedans to luxury EVs. Relay Attacks: Thieves use radio amplifiers to trick your car into thinking the key is nearby-even if it's inside your Attackers block your unlock signal, record it, and use it later to open your Attacks: Hackers can clone keys by intercepting and analyzing the digital handshake between car and fob. The U.S. car theft landscape is dominated by models with weak immobilizer systems, especially older Hyundais and Kias, but modern keyless entry vulnerabilities-including those in Tesla and other brands-are a growing concern. Here are the US' 2024 Top 10 Most Stolen from keyless entry attacks. Tesla Model 3 and Model Y have been proven susceptible to Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) relay attacks, allowing thieves to unlock and drive away in seconds if advanced security features (like PIN-to-drive) are not not among the top 10 most stolen cars by volume, Tesla's vulnerability is notable because the attack exploits the convenience of phone-as-key and BLE fobs, similar to attacks on other brands using BLE for entry/ This Tesla feature can thwart drive-away thefts, but it must be manually enabled by the owner. Hyundai and Kia (pre-2022/2023): Most vulnerable overall due to lack of immobilizers; relay and physical attacks are both pickups (Chevrolet Silverado, Ford F-150): Targeted for parts and theft, with keyless entry increasing risk in newer keyless models (Toyota Camry, Dodge Charger, Honda Accord/Civic): Newer trims with push-button start are susceptible to relay attacks, though immobilizers are generally and other BLE/NFC-based vehicles: Vulnerable to advanced relay attacks, especially if owners do not use additional security features. Despite years of warnings, most manufacturers have stuck with outdated cryptography and unidirectional signals. "Security by obscurity" (hoping hackers won't find the flaws) still rules, even as researchers and thieves race to outsmart each other. The result: a boom in thefts, and a booming business for aftermarket Faraday pouches that block radio signals-because your $60,000 SUV apparently needs a $10 shield the maker won't fork out for. Some researchers are pushing for smarter solutions: adaptive frequency-hopping, two-way authentication protocols, and dynamic cryptographic keys. These upgrades would make it much harder for thieves to intercept or spoof signals. But until automakers make these standard, your car's digital handshake is a handshake with risk. If your car unlocks with a wave or a ping, it's at risk. Until the industry catches up, use all available security features, and consider a Faraday pouch or steering lock. Convenience shouldn't mean handing your keys to a thief. Copyright 2025 The Arena Group, Inc. All Rights Reserved.
