Sunway Medical Centre Retains Malaysia's Top Spot In Paediatrics For Three Consecutive Years

KUALA LUMPUR, June 19 (Bernama) -- Sunway Medical Centre, Sunway City (SMC) retained its top spot for paediatrics in Malaysia for three years in a row, according to the latest Best Specialised Hospitals Asia Pacific (APAC) Newsweek 2025 rankings.
SMC, in a statement today, said the country's largest private quaternary hospital ranks 30th for paediatrics and is also featured in the top 75 APAC hospitals for neurology, neurosurgery, cardiology, cardiac surgery, oncology and orthopaedics.
President of Sunway Healthcare Group Datuk Lau Beng Long expressed pride for the continued recognition of its healthcare in the region, especially SMC's paediatrics being the top in Malaysia.
He said SMC's Children's Health and Development Centre offers the most comprehensive paediatric subspecialties among hospitals in Malaysia, with 26 subspecialties and 50 consultants.
He added that the hospital also pioneered the nation's first private hospital 24-hour standalone Children's Emergency Department, operating separately from the adult Accident & Emergency Department, serving as a one-stop centre that offers urgent, comforting care for infants, children and adolescents.
'The hospital also excels in exceptional niche paediatric expertise, including haematology, gastroenterology, oncology and transplant medicine. Sunway Medical Centre became the first private hospital in Malaysia to successfully perform a paediatric kidney transplant, yet another testament to its drive for clinical excellence.
'In addition, the hospital continuously enhances the depth and breadth of its other major adult clinical disciplines like cardiology, oncology, neurology, gastroenterology and orthopaedic surgery,' he said.
Meanwhile, SMC Chief Executive Officer Dr Seow Vei Ken said the recognition reaffirms the hospital's commitment to clinical excellence and patient-centred care, especially paediatric services.
'Sunway Medical Centre continues to be at the forefront as Malaysia's top private paediatric service provider, offering a comprehensive ecosystem of specialised care for children,' he said.

Using genetic details to treat illnesses

This type of care is now available at Sunway Medical Centre (SMC) in Bandar Sunway, Petaling Jaya in Selangor. The hospital has launched its Genomics Medicine Centre to provide advanced healthcare services. Speaking at the launch, Sunway Healthcare Group hospital and healthcare operations managing director Dr Khoo Chow Huat said their goal was not just to treat illness but to stay ahead of it. 'Our Genomics Medicine Centre reflects our vision for a future where healthcare is personalised to each patient's needs and risks, rather than a one-size-fits-all approach. 'We are proud to offer Malaysian patients access to precision medicine that's on par with the world's best,' he added. According to the centre's media statement, the services integrate genomic science into clinical care, supporting more informed, patient-specific healthcare approaches in Malaysia and the region. It is helping doctors better treat cancer, choose the right medications and diagnose rare or hard-to-identify illnesses and infections, the centre said. 'Malaysia, like many developing countries, is facing a dual healthcare challenge – an ageing population with rising rates of chronic conditions and a growing number of patients living with undiagnosed or misdiagnosed rare diseases. 'The genomic medicine services aim to offer timely and relevant genetic insights that support early intervention and improved care planning,' the centre added. Dr Khoo, in his speech, said through these new services, patients would have access to a comprehensive range of genomic testing services, including hereditary cancer risk screening, liquid biopsy for cancer screening and rare disease diagnostics. Sunway Healthcare: Give us more time to prepare for revised SST

CYBERJAYA: Sunway Healthcare is evaluating the potential effects of the impending implementation of the expanded Sales and Service Tax (SST) as the company believes the announced timeline is insufficient for private hospitals to adequately prepare for the new policy. 'Given the relatively short notice ahead of the July 1 implementation date, we require additional time to assess the situation fully. 'Our team is reviewing the matter, but we are unable to provide further comment at this stage as we do not yet have complete data,' Sunway Healthcare president Datuk Lau Beng Long told SunBiz on the sidelines of the signing of a memorandum of understanding involving Sunway Medical Centre, University of Cyberjaya and Cyberjaya College Kota Kinabalu to develop nursing talent in Malaysia today. To recap, on June 9, the government announced the implementation of revisions to the SST rates and an expansion of the Service Tax's scope, effective July 1. Lau said Sunway Healthcare is aligning with the Association of Private Hospitals Malaysia's (APHM) call to delay the implementation of the expanded SST. 'APHM president Datuk Dr Kuljit Singh is reviewing this matter. The association has appealed to the relevant ministry to either review or defer the implementation date. As the appeal is under consideration, we are awaiting the outcome to determine whether the policy will be implemented and, if so, when it will take effect,' Lau said. APHM has called for a delay in the implementation of the expanded SST on private healthcare services for foreigners. In a statement on June 11, APHM stated that while it supports the government's broader policy objectives of broadening the tax base and stimulating economic growth, private hospitals require more time to make the necessary operational adjustments to comply with the new tax rule. The short implementation time frame presents significant operational challenges as private hospitals would need sufficient lead time to adjust administrative systems, billing processes, and compliance procedures, it said. APHM has submitted a written request to the Ministry of Finance for a more practical timeline beyond the current July 1 start date to minimise disruption to patient services and ensure full compliance. APHM has also sought further clarification on several aspects of the new policy, including its application to professional fees charged by doctors, treatment of foreigners residing in Malaysia and other implementation matters. 'Private hospitals are an essential part of Malaysia's health care ecosystem, delivering quality care to both local and international patients,' APHM said.
