Facebook group sharing indecent images of Malaysian girls taken down, says deputy minister
JOHOR BARU, June 15 — A Facebook group dubbed 'Grup Budak-budak Sekolah Rendah', which allegedly circulated indecent images of teenage girls, has been shut down, said Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching.
She said the Ministry of Communications, through the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), had contacted Meta to disable the Facebook account.
'I do not wish to comment further as the investigation is ongoing, but I would like to stress that MCMC will continue to work with the police to take follow-up action and carry out further investigations,' she said after attending a charity sale and cultural performance programme at a shopping mall here today.
Social media influencer Mek Yun, 28, whose real name is Wee Yun Nee, had earlier exposed the existence of the group and urged the authorities to act swiftly to curb the spread of immoral content.
According to Teo, the MCMC, in collaboration with the police, launched Op Pedo last year, resulting in the arrest of 13 individuals and the discovery of more than 40,000 child sexual abuse materials (CSAM) and other pornographic content.
Meanwhile, she said the government was actively implementing the Safe Internet Campaign (KIS), targeting students at the primary, secondary and tertiary education levels.
'To date, the MCMC has carried out the programme in 53 schools, involving 11,389 participants comprising pupils, students, teachers and parents.
'Our target from May to August is to implement the KIS in 344 schools nationwide, including at least 20 schools in Johor,' she said.
Teo said the campaign focused on educating students about cyberbullying, the importance of personal data security, and the dangers of interacting with strangers online.
'We encourage all interested schools to contact the MCMC office so that we can arrange training sessions and talks on digital safety,' she said.
Teo also called on parents to play a role in educating their children on the safe and responsible use of the internet. — Bernama

Yesterday, North Klang police chief ACP S Vijaya Rao confirmed that a 46-year-old local man had died from gunshot wounds in a four-wheel drive Ford Ranger pickup truck, with a post-mortem scheduled for 9 am today. When contacted today, Vijaya Rao said police were investigating possible secret society elements in the case. He said several individuals had so far been called in to have their statements recorded. 'Preliminary investigations found that the victim, who was self-employed, was accompanying his friend who wanted to buy a second-hand motorcycle at the shop. Rare Irrawaddy dolphin dies in illegal ray net off Kuala Kedah, says MMEA
ALOR SETAR, June 21 — A rare Irrawaddy dolphin was found dead, tragically entangled in an illegal ray fishing net known locally as 'pukat pari' that was left behind by fishermen in the waters off Kuala Kedah yesterday. Kuala Kedah Maritime Zone director commander Noor Azreyanti Ishak said the dolphin, an endangered marine mammal, was found by a Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) patrol team at about 11 am, approximately 1.1 nautical miles from the Kuala Kedah estuary. 'The discovery was made following the seizure of a RM2,000 ray net, which is prohibited under the Fisheries Act 1985 due to its non-selective nature. The net not only traps stingrays and juvenile fish but also poses a serious threat to protected marine species,' she said in a statement today. Noor Azreyanti said the Irrawaddy dolphin (Orcaella brevirostris), also known locally as 'empesut', is a unique species that is becoming increasingly rare in Southeast Asia, including in Malaysia. She added that the loss of even a single Irrawaddy dolphin has a major impact on the ecosystem, given its critically low population and elusive nature. Meanwhile, Noor Azreyanti said the latest seizure was the sixth involving ray nets in the Kuala Kedah maritime zone so far this year. 'The use of the nets not only affects the population of stingrays, which are benthic predators, but also disrupts the overall balance of the ecosystem if left unchecked,' she said. Perak MB orders full probe after mysterious explosions, tremors rattle Ipoh residents again
IPOH, June 21 — The Perak government has called on the relevant departments to conduct a thorough investigation into the explosions and tremors reported in several areas here last Wednesday. Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad said the incident, including a similar one in October last year, had caused concern and alarm among residents. 'It is time for the relevant departments and agencies to prepare a full report and conduct a study into the cause of the explosions,' he said at a press conference after closing the National Training Week (NTW) 2025 at the Ipoh Convention Centre (ICC) here today. Saarani also advised the public not to spread unverified or false information about the incident. 'The public should remain calm and need not worry, as the situation is under control and no serious incidents have been reported so far,' he said. Explosions and tremors were reportedly heard and felt around Chemor and Chepor here at about 10.30 am on June 18, but the cause remains unknown. Perak police chief Datuk Noor Hisam Nordin, at a press conference the following day, said the police would hold discussions with the relevant departments and agencies soon to determine the actual cause of the explosions and tremors.
