Punjab: Keep eye on obscene social media content, minister tells officials

Punjab social security, women and child development minister Baljit Kaur on Sunday expressed concern over the increasing trend of vulgar and obscene content being circulated on social media platforms. Hailing the orders issued by the Punjab State Commission for Protection of Child Rights to the ADGP (cyber crime) for strict action against those posting such content, the minister directed all district social security, women and child development officers to keep a strict watch on the circulation of such objectionable content at their level. She instructed that any complaint or information received regarding such content must be immediately shared with the police and the Child Rights Commission. Additionally, awareness campaigns must be organised at the local level to sensitise parents, teachers and youth about the responsible use of social media, she mentioned.
Kaur stated that any elements adversely affecting the mental health of children would not be tolerated under any circumstances. The culprits will face the strictest legal action to deter others from posting obscene content online.
The minister also instructed the police to intensify surveillance of such content on social media and take immediate action against individuals involved in creating or uploading it, under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023, IT Act 2000, and POCSO Act 2012.
She appealed to parents, teachers, social organisations and others to promptly report any such content or individuals involved in circulating it to the police or the Child Rights Commission without delay. 'Creating a safe, healthy, and positive digital environment for children is a shared responsibility of all of us,' she emphasised.

Pillion rider killed as truck hits two-wheeler from behind on Pune's Wadgaon flyover
A 25-year-old man was killed in a road accident as a truck allegedly collided with two cars and a two-wheeler on the Wadgaon flyover in Pune on the Mumbai-Bengaluru highway Sunday morning. The police arrested the truck driver on charges of negligent driving. The deceased was identified as Kiran Pawar, 25, a resident of Shram Safalya Colony in Karve Nagar. His friend Yash Kirdat, 25, also from Karve Nagar, was injured in the accident. Pawar was riding pillion while Kirdat was riding the two-wheeler when the speeding truck allegedly hit it from behind around 5 am. The truck further collided with two cars and escaped from the spot, said the police. After receiving information, a police team rushed to the spot. They took Pawar and Kirdat to a hospital for treatment. Pawar was pronounced dead while Kirdat was admitted for treatment. Kirdat lodged the FIR in this case at the Sinhagad Road police station. A police team led by Inspector Dilip Daingade launched a probe into the accident and arrested the truck driver, Mahantesh Andodagi, 37, hailing from Karnataka, Sunday night. Last month, one man was killed, and several others were injured after a speeding Mercedes car rammed into a motorcycle on the Wadgaon bridge. The police arrested four people travelling in the Mercedes car, including the driver and owner. They booked a case under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Motor Vehicles Act and claimed that the driver was drunk while driving. In another accident last month, a speeding truck ran over a 36-year-old motorcyclist near the Wadgaon bridge. The truck also hit two autorickshaws, a car and another two-wheeler in the accident.

YSRCP chief and former Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy has been named as an accused in a fatal road accident that allegedly occurred when he was on his way to Rentapalla village in Palnadu district recently, a police official said. Guntur district Superintendent of Police S Satish Kumar, addressing a press conference late on Sunday said that upon receiving the information about the old man, Singaiah, who suffered severe bleeding injuries, he was rushed to a hospital but was declared brought dead by doctors. On June 18, Reddy visited Rentapalla to call on a family member of a YSRCP leader who had died by suicide a year ago. The former CM's vehicle went through the Etukuru bypass. "After analysing various evidence, it was found that the deceased was seen under the wheels of Reddy's vehicle," Kumar said. A case was initially registered under Section 106(1) of BNS (causing death by negligence) based on a complaint by the deceased person's wife, Cheeli Lurdhu Mary, at the local police station. After analysing CCTV footage, drone visuals, and circumstantial evidence, "police confirmed that the deceased was run over by the Ex-CM's vehicle in the convoy," said police. Following this "confirmation", police altered the case to include Sections 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and 49 of the BNS (Abetment) and intensified the investigation into the circumstances involved. Other accused include Reddy's driver Ramana Reddy, Personal Assistant K Nageshwar Reddy, senior YSRCP leader YV Subbareddy, former MLA Perni Venkataramaiah, and former Minister Vidadala Rajini, Kumar told reporters. Their names have been added in the accused column, said Kumar, adding that legal action will proceed according to due process and applicable provisions of law, he said.

CCTV hunt pays off: 4-year-old girl abducted in Delhi traced to Barabanki; rescued from brink of begging racket
NEW DELHI: A four-year-old girl was rescued from her woman kidnapper who allegedly abducted her from central Delhi's Chandni Mahal on June 18 to make her beg and later sell her off, police have said. The woman allegedly took the girl away when the child's mother was out to fetch drinking water. Police have said that they have arrested the 40-year-old woman, Barkha, and she admitted that she had planned to use the child for begging and then sell her once she grew up. After reviewing footage from 100 CCTV cameras, officers traced the girl to the woman's house in Barabanki, Uttar Pradesh. Although the woman initially escaped, she was caught near Old Delhi Railway Station with the child. Police reported that on June 18, they received a complaint about the girl missing from the Chandni Mahal area. The complainant stated that around 5 pm, while his wife was collecting drinking water at their rented accommodation, their four-year-old daughter left the house with her elder sister and later disappeared. Despite extensive efforts, the child could not be located. Deputy commissioner of police (central) Nidhin Valsan formed a team under inspector Mahavir Prasad and sub-inspector Akash to catch the suspect and trace the child. "The team conducted an investigation, which involved scrutinising footage from CCTV cameras across the area to identify both the victim and the suspect. From the minute analysis of CCTV footage from various locations, the child was seen alone heading towards Delhi Gate near Sanchar Bhawan. Secret informers were activated for any information," police said. The team got a tip-off that a woman beggar had taken the girl to her village, Behta, in Barabanki. She was immediately caught, and the child was safely rescued from her custody. Upon interrogation, she disclosed that she had abducted the girl. The child was reunited with her parents.
