Indian women face several health issues, such as diabetes, high blood pressure and the possibility of developing cancer. A study by the McKinsey Health Institute and the World Economic Forum found that over 25% of women's lives were spent in poor health.
Consequently, it is imperative to prioritise women's physical and emotional health. In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Jay Goyal, Eye Surgeon, LASIK Specialist, Retina Specialist and Director at Surya Eye Hospital in Mumbai, suggested that everyone should gift their moms these five critical health checkups.
Every woman over 40 should have a physical every year. Your mother's complete medical examination must include tests for blood pressure, blood sugar, lipid profile, haemoglobin, body mass index (BMI), and all other fundamental essentials.
Additionally, it is crucial to assess her thyroid profile. Diabetes, heart disease, high or low blood pressure, and obesity are among the health conditions that can be helped and detected by all of these tests. For women without risk factors, cholesterol screening should start at age 45; for those with risk factors, it should start at age 20. Timely action, which is essential for preserving health, is made possible by early identification.
Everyone, including mothers, should have a comprehensive eye exam every six months. Women frequently prioritize their children over their own health. Additionally, they frequently overlook early indicators of eye conditions such as gluocoma and cataracts. It is, therefore important that you develop the habit of getting your mother's eyes checked every six months as she ages.
Highlighting the importance ofeyes, DrJay Goyal said, 'It is recommended that all women undergo routine eye exams. Mothers are the glue that holds the whole family together. Thus, protecting their vision is crucial. The family has a responsibility to ensure that the women in their homes receive routine eye exams. This is the only method to stop eye disorders from getting worse. After all, a healthier country depends on fostering a culture that promotes women's health via education, preventive and easily available medical treatment.'
Women over 40 should get a yearly breast cancer mammography and speak with a gynaecologist. Many lives can be saved by early identification of breast cancer. Regretfully, according to a survey, only one out of every four women over 45 get a mammogram. This indicates that Indian women have a very low chance of developing breast cancer.
This also applies to cervical cancer. As early as age 21, this cancer can be screened for. Every three years, women should have a Pap test. Following therapy for precancer (cervical dysplasia), women should receive Pap tests for 20 years or until they turn 65, whichever comes first.
A bone density test is a health screening test that is an excellent preventive measure against conditions like osteoporosis. This condition is characterised by bones becoming brittle and weak, allowing them to crack or break under mild pressure. Mothers should take a bone density test to identify and treat any early symptoms of osteoporosis in a timely manner.
Mothers should also go for periodic dental exams. They should examine their teeth to identify early signs of rotting or smelly teeth. Regular dental checkups can help detect cavities, gum infections, and plaque buildup before they worsen. Maintaining oral hygiene is essential not just for a confident smile, but also to prevent infections that may affect overall health — especially during and after pregnancy.
Dr Jay Goyal asserted, 'Health encompasses mental, emotional and physical well-being. We must talk about health in its broadest sense. Therefore, it is crucial that children look after their mothers' mental and physical well-being. Many women endure an invisible emotional burden. Although the strain of providing care, the burden of expectations and the need to endure in silence are frequently disregarded or internalised, the body actually keeps track of them. Promoting access to mental health treatments, lowering stigma and fostering a healthy atmosphere are all part of investing in well-being.'

Diabetics should monitor blood sugar if eating for the first time and stick to a small serving — ideally not more than 100 grams (half a cup). Always eat it as part of a balanced meal, not on an empty stomach or in excess. Jamun seeds are not eaten raw like the fruit but they are highly valued in powdered form. They contain compounds that help reduce blood sugar levels. You can dry the seeds in the sunlight, grind them into a fine powder and take one teaspoon daily mixed with water or buttermilk — but only after consulting your doctor, especially if you're on diabetes medication. It's generally best to eat jamun on its own, not mixed with other fruits. Some fruits you should avoid combining with jamun are: Citrus fruits (like oranges, sweet lime): These are acidic and may clash with the astringent nature of jamun, causing acidity or indigestion. Milk-based fruits (like bananas or chikoo): Can lead to digestive issues when mixed with jamun. High-sugar fruits (like mangoes, grapes): This combination can spike blood sugar in diabetics. Yoga promotion shouldn't be seen as boosting Hindutva agenda
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while addressing the 11th International Yoga Day celebrations in Visakhapatnam on Saturday, said—perhaps too optimistically—that yoga has the potential to ensure peace in a 'conflict-ridden' world. Describing yoga as the 'pause button' humanity desperately needs, he urged the world to embrace 'Yoga for Humanity 2.0'—a vision where inner peace becomes the foundation for global peace. The theme for this year's International Yoga Day—Yoga for One Earth, One Health—was especially apt in a world recovering from the shocks of a global pandemic, grappling with environmental degradation, and suffering from geopolitical instability. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, also present at the event, highlighted the scale and success of Yoga Day. He credited Modi with making yoga a truly global movement, noting that the practice is now being celebrated in over 175 countries, across 12 lakh locations, with participation from more than 10 crore people. This scale reflects how yoga has transformed from a personal wellness routine to a symbol of collective global consciousness. Indeed, Modi's role in promoting yoga on the world stage has been commendable. From securing June 21 as the UN-recognized International Day of Yoga in 2014 to encouraging mass participation across countries and cultures, he has helped reposition yoga as a universal tool for well-being. What was once primarily associated with Indian spirituality is now embraced by millions globally as a secular, health-enhancing practice. The fact that yoga has found resonance in countries as diverse as the United States, France, Indonesia and Kenya speaks volumes about its adaptability and timeless appeal. However, two important considerations must temper this inspiring narrative. First, while yoga is undeniably beneficial, it is only one component of a healthy lifestyle. The Indian government should now broaden its focus and include the entire spectrum of wellness-related activities. This includes promoting regular physical exercise of all types, balanced diets, access to clean and nutritious food, and mental health care. Initiatives such as 'Fit India' and 'Eat Right' campaigns are a step in this direction but need far more robust implementation and integration with the yoga movement. True national health cannot be achieved through yoga alone—it requires a multi-pronged and inclusive strategy. Second, there remains a concern regarding the cultural and political subtext that sometimes accompanies the promotion of yoga in India. It is a well-known fact that yoga is not just a set of exercises; it is also deeply rooted in the cultural legacy of Hinduism. While it is important to acknowledge yoga's origins, there is a fine line between celebrating heritage and using it to promote a particular political agenda. Ideally, the government must ensure that yoga remains an inclusive, apolitical health initiative, free of religious or ideological overtones. But ideals are regarded as unwanted aliens in the realm of realpolitik. The International Yoga Day has grown into a global celebration of physical and mental well-being, largely due to Modi's diplomatic and cultural outreach. His call for using yoga to build peace is noble and timely. However, for this vision to be fully realised, it must be accompanied by a broader, more inclusive health agenda and a clear separation between cultural pride and political messaging. Only then can yoga become a true symbol of universal harmony and healing.
