UFC 317 picked up an eye-opening flyweight fight earlier this week when the UFC booked Joshua Van to step in on short notice to face Brandon Royval shortly after Royval's initial opponent, Manel Kape, dropped off the card due to a foot injury. Royval enters the June 28 pay-per-view card as the No. 1 ranked UFC flyweight, while Van is riding a four-fight winning streak.
UFC 317 takes place on June 28 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The PPV card is the centerpiece of this year's UFC International Fight Week festivities.

Kape, who is the No. 6 ranked UFC flyweight broke the news that he was out of his UFC 317 matchup opposite Royval on social media. "With great regret, I come to inform that I am out of the next #UFC317 competition.
"I suffered a foot fracture during the training &, after medical evaluation, I was instructed to have surgery & focus 100% on recovery.
"It's not easy to stay out of something I've been preparing for with so much dedication, and without a doubt this would be the most advantageous fight of my career but I understand that this is just another challenge on the way and I trust the plans that Allah has for me!
'I sincerely thank everyone who is with me - we remain firm, stronger with each obstacle. The battle was only postponed... I'll be back soon!' Kape wrote on X.
Kape and Royval were scheduled to meet in March 2025, but Royval withdrew from that fight due to concussions. Kape stayed on the card, beating Asu Almabayev by TKO. The win was Kape's second straight TKO win and improved his record to 6-1 dating back to August 2021.
'Manel Kape is out, Joshua Van is stepping in,' Royval said on Instagram. 'I have zero idea of the extent of Manel Kape's injuries but I do know I have the hottest prospect and probably the most exciting UFC flyweight in front of me. Really nothing changes for me as far as what's in front of me. I've got a gangster that's ready to take my head off and earn his name off of me.'
Van confirmed Royval's statement, saying on X, 'I'll be fighting Royval June 28!!!'
Royval last fought in October 2024 when he scored a split decision win over Tatsuro Taira in a 'Fight of the Night' bonus-winning performance at the top of a UFC Vegas fight card.

When BetOnline published the opening betting lines for the Royval vs. Van matchup, Van opened as the -260 betting favorite over Royval, who was the +220 betting underdog. Those odds have shifted in a big way since then. Today, Royval is the -132 betting favorite over Van, who is currently the +122 betting underdog.

The timing of the Royval vs. Van fight is excellent. The co-main event of UFC 317 finds the flyweight title on the line, as champion Alexandre Pantoja faces Kai Kara-France in that matchup. The winner of the Royval vs. Van fight, which is currently booked for the UFC 317 prelims, could determine who faces the winner of that Pantoja vs. Kara-France matchup.
Van spoke about that fight.
"Kai is a very powerful guy. So I feel like if Kai doesn't show him too much respect, I think he can get it done," Van said. "But if Pantoja bullies him in there, it's done. It's over.
'It would be ideal if I fight Pantoja because nobody's ever beaten him as the champion. So if I go out there and beat him, that would be [great]. May the best man win.'
Royval faced Pantoja in a title fight in December 2023. Pantoja won that contest by decision. The two also faced each other in a non-title bout in August 2021. Pantoja earned a submission win in that scrap.
Royval has a September 2020 submission win over Kara-France.
The UFC officially announced the five-fight line-up for UFC 317 during the UFC 316 broadcast.
Ilia Topuria vs. Charles Oliveira - For vacant UFC lightweight title
Alexandre Pantoja vs. Kai Kara-France - For Pantoja's UFC flyweight title
Paulo Costa vs. Roman Kopylov - Middleweight
Beneil Dariush vs. Renato Moicano - Lightweight
Jhonata Diniz vs. Justin Tafa - Heavyweight
We will have more on Royval vs. Van and the UFC 317 fight card as fight night approaches.

Petrovic, Alker, Ricardo Gonzalez share lead at Firestone in PGA Tour Champions major

AKRON, Ohio (AP) — Tim Petrovic shot a 4-under 66 on Friday for a share of second-round lead with Steven Alker and Ricardo Gonzalez in the Kaulig Companies Championship, the third major of the year on the PGA Tour Champions. Petrovic closed with a birdie on the par-4 ninth to match Alker and Gonzalez at 5-under 135 at Firestone South. Alker, from New Zealand, had a 66. Gonzalez, the Argentine player who shared the first-round lead with Soren Kjeldsen, shot 68. Miguel Angel Jimenez was a stroke back after a 66. Freddie Jacobson was 3 under after a 67. Angel Cabrera, who already has won two majors this year at the Regions Tradition and the Senior PGA Championship at Congressional, was 1 under after a 68. The winner of the tournaments gets a spot in The Players Championship at the TPC Sawgrass next year. Firestone South previously hosted the World Series of Golf and then a World Golf Championship. It's a strong test for players who next go to the U.S. Senior Open in Colorado. ___ AP golf:

Canelo Alvarez vs. Terence Crawford to have KO bonus after Canelo's all-time stinker against William Scull

Saul "Canelo" Alvarez and Terence Crawford faced off Friday at the kickoff press conference for their Sept. 13 showdown. The highly-anticipated Saul "Canelo" Alvarez vs. Terence Crawford showdown on Sept. 13 will be the first fight financed by Turki Alalshikh to have a knockout bonus, Alalshikh announced Friday at the kickoff press conference for the Netflix-streamed undisputed super middleweight title bout in Riyadh. The lead promoter for Alvarez vs. Crawford is Dana White and TKO Boxing — the venture formed by Alalshikh, White and WWE President Nick Khan earlier this year. White is also the CEO of the UFC, where performance-related bonuses are a regular feature. "We will not have [a fighter who is running] anymore [on our shows], this is the first thing," Alalshikh responded when asked how he plans to prevent disappointing 'Tom and Jerry' fights moving forward. Advertisement "The second [thing], we will have in [Alvarez vs. Crawford] and [future] fights, bonuses for KOs." Alvarez's most recent ring appearance was a historically dreadful bout against Cuba's William Scull. Alvarez (152) and Scull (293) combined to throw the fewest punches in a 12-round fight in the 40-year history of boxing stat-tracker CompuBox. Scull refused to fight with Alvarez, instead choosing to throw pitter-patter jabs and moving constantly. "Canelo" was forced to chase him down and push to engage, but Alvarez's 34-year-old legs did a poor job of that and it made for an abysmal watch. The night before — also on a show funded by Alalshikh — Devin Haney (224) and Jose Ramirez (279) combined to throw the fourth-fewest punches at the time in a 12-round fight, while Rolando "Rolly" Romero (280) and Ryan Garcia (210) combined to throw the third-fewest punches ever in a 12-round fight. After the back-to-back disappointing shows, Alalshikh voiced his frustration with "Tom and Jerry" fights and fighters who competed with an unentertaining style. His debuting of the knockout bonus on Sept. 13 serves as an attempt to change boxers' approaches to fights, reminding them of the need to entertain as well as win. Advertisement Alalshikh did not clarify how much the knockout bonus would be for Alvarez vs. Crawford, although the pair's combined purses for the superfight are expected to exceed $100 million. Inside the distance or not, Crawford continued to insist that he has what it takes to defeat Alvarez at the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas and become the first fighter of the four-belt era to become an undisputed champion in three weight divisions. "For sure, the belts are coming with me, they're coming home with me. I'm telling you right now," Crawford said to Alvarez. "I know Turki is in your corner," Alvarez responded, "but look, it's going to be very difficult. [Alalshikh is] going to be so mad that day, believe me." Advertisement Alvarez and Alalshikh have had an up-and-down relationship over the past year. Alalshikh said he would crush Alvarez's fight against Edgar Berlanga this past September with a competing event that night, UFC 306. Alvarez was not impressed by those comments and retaliated against the Saudi boxing financier. The pair, however, ultimately reconciled and agreed on a four-fight deal this past February. The second of those four bouts for Alvarez will be against Crawford in September.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Two-time Daytona 500 winner Michael Waltrip has joined the ownership group of the Nashville Kats, a founding franchise of the Arena Football 1 league. The Kats announced Waltrip joining the group Friday along with his craft beer company Michael Waltrip Brewing.
