UFC 317: Brandon Royval Vs. Joshua Van Opening Betting Odds

(Photo by Chris Unger/Zuffa LLC) UFC 317 picked up an eye-opening flyweight fight earlier this week when the UFC booked Joshua Van to step in on short notice to face Brandon Royval shortly after Royval's initial opponent, Manel Kape, dropped off the card due to a foot injury. Royval enters the June 28 pay-per-view card as the No. 1 ranked UFC flyweight, while Van is riding a four-fight winning streak. UFC 317 takes place on June 28 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. (Photo) Kape, who is the No. 6 ranked UFC flyweight broke the news that he was out of his UFC 317 matchup opposite Royval on social media. "With great regret, I come to inform that I am out of the next #UFC317 competition. "I suffered a foot fracture during the training &, after medical evaluation, I was instructed to have surgery & focus 100% on recovery. "It's not easy to stay out of something I've been preparing for with so much dedication, and without a doubt this would be the most advantageous fight of my career but I understand that this is just another challenge on the way and I trust the plans that Allah has for me! 'I sincerely thank everyone who is with me - we remain firm, stronger with each obstacle. The battle was only postponed... I'll be back soon!' Kape wrote on X. Kape and Royval were scheduled to meet in March 2025, but Royval withdrew from that fight due to concussions. Kape stayed on the card, beating Asu Almabayev by TKO. The win was Kape's second straight TKO win and improved his record to 6-1 dating back to August 2021. 'Manel Kape is out, Joshua Van is stepping in,' Royval said on Instagram. 'I have zero idea of the extent of Manel Kape's injuries but I do know I have the hottest prospect and probably the most exciting UFC flyweight in front of me. Really nothing changes for me as far as what's in front of me. I've got a gangster that's ready to take my head off and earn his name off of me.' Van confirmed Royval's statement, saying on X, 'I'll be fighting Royval June 28!!!' Those odds have shifted in a big way since then. Today, Royval is the -132 betting favorite over Van, who is currently the +122 betting underdog. The co-main event of UFC 317 finds the flyweight title on the line, as champion Alexandre Pantoja faces Kai Kara-France in that matchup. The winner of the Royval vs. Van fight, which is currently booked for the UFC 317 prelims, could determine who faces the winner of that Pantoja vs. Kara-France matchup. Van spoke about that fight. "Kai is a very powerful guy. So I feel like if Kai doesn't show him too much respect, I think he can get it done," Van said. "But if Pantoja bullies him in there, it's done. It's over. 'It would be ideal if I fight Pantoja because nobody's ever beaten him as the champion. So if I go out there and beat him, that would be [great]. May the best man win.' Royval faced Pantoja in a title fight in December 2023. Pantoja won that contest by decision. The two also faced each other in a non-title bout in August 2021. Pantoja earned a submission win in that scrap. Royval has a September 2020 submission win over Kara-France. The UFC officially announced the five-fight line-up for UFC 317 during the UFC 316 broadcast. Maycee Barber says UFC on ESPN 68 withdrawal vs. Erin Blanchfield 'just a bad hand'
Less than 24 hours after a shocking and dramatic withdrawal from the UFC on ESPN 68 main event, Maycee Barber posted a bit of an explanation on social media. Barber (14-2 MMA, 9-2 UFC) was set to headline the card at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas against Erin Blanchfield (13-2 MMA, 7-1 UFC). But just moments before she was set to walk out – video packages for the headliner already had been broadcast – she was not medically cleared to fight. Advertisement The women's flyweight bout was canceled literally in the final minute or two before the fighters were set to walk to the cage from the back – leaving even the broadcast team unsure what was happening. Sunday, Barber had little to say on Instagram beyond an apology, but suggested what caused the incident was not expected. Barber included video taken backstage at the UFC Apex showing her being wheeled on a stretcher to an ambulance. "Not what I had planned for a Sunday post," Barber posted. "Thank you to everyone for the prayers & support I owe an apology to @ufc @mickmaynard2 @danawhite @seanshelby & @blanchfield_mma ** PS my life is not messy this is just a bad hand. We will get to the bottom of it all and be back 🤍" Fight week featured veiled comments by Blanchfield wondering if Barber would show up to the fight. Friday, Barber missed weight by a half-pound and declined an opportunity to cut the additional weight to avoid paying a penalty to Blanchfield. Advertisement At the ceremonial faceoffs just after the weigh-ins, the two had to be separated by matchmaker Sean Shelby, and their beef continued on social media later on in the day. But when fight time rolled around, Barber was unable to make the walk. Blanchfield said after the fight she is not interested in rebooking a fight with Barber. Barber was set to fight for the first time in more than a year. Now that layoff will be extended indefinitely, it appears. UFC fighter rips opponent after seizure causes last-second main event cancellation: ‘She's a complete mess'
The long-awaited women's flyweight main event between Erin Blanchfield and Maycee Barber at UFC Vegas 107 was abruptly canceled Saturday. Just minutes before the fighters were set to make their walkouts, Barber, who had already missed weight by half a pound the previous day, reportedly suffered a seizure backstage and was rendered medically unfit to compete. It's pretty crazy, especially at this level. You expect all the athletes to be professional, so it's pretty wild.' She also expressed disbelief over the sequence of events, questioning Barber's professionalism. 'I feel like I'm still in pretty much disbelief right now. I feel like I was in disbelief yesterday when she missed weight because we knew about this fight since January. You could have been 50 pounds overweight and still made weight.' Blanchfield adds that she would not accept a rematch with Barber. 'No, I would not want to book another fight with her,' Blanchfield said. 'I would like to reassess, see who's available. I still want to fight within the top five, still push towards that title fight. The 26-year-old Blanchfield was riding a nine-fight winning streak when she faced Manon Fiorot in the main event of a UFC Fight Night card in March 2024. Fiorot won that bout with ease, ringing up three 50-45 scores from the judges. The victory earned Fiorot a UFC 315 matchup against UFC women's flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko, a bout Shevchenko won via decision. Blanchfield took a step back toward a title fight in November when she scored a decision win over former UFC women's strawweight champion Rose Namajunas. Barber (14-2) is the No. 5 fighter in the UFC women's 125-pound division. She opened her UFC career with a 3-2 record, but is undefeated since dropping back-to-back decisions to Roxanne Modafferi and Alexa Grasso in 2020 and 2021. The 27-year-old Barber is riding a six-fight winning streak heading into UFC Vegas 107. Her most recent victory was a March 2024 decision win over Katlyn Cerminara. Barber was schedule to face Rose Namajunas in July 2024, but she dropped out of that fight due to illness. Barber later revealed she had Epstein-barr virus. I was so bummed when – well, first of all, I was so excited to fight Rose because not only was I fighting Rose, but I was also fighting in Denver where I made my UFC debut. UFC Vegas 107: Maycee Barber's weight miss leads parade of issues at official weigh-ins
UFC Vegas 107's official weigh-ins did not go off without a hitch. Far from it. Four fights on what was supposed to be an 11-fight card were affected by Friday's proceedings, chief among them Maycee Barber failing to make weight for her flyweight headliner against Erin Blanchfield. A gaunt Barber tipped the scales at 126.5 pounds for the five-round bout, registering in a half-pound over the non-title flyweight limit. Advertisement As a result, Barber was forced to forfeit 20 percent of her purse to her opponent and UFC Vegas 107's headlining bout will move forward as planned. Blanchfield successfully weighed in at 125 pounds. In addition to Barber's botched weight cut, flyweight veteran Allan Nascimento also missed weight, coming in at 127.5 pounds — 1.5 pounds over the flyweight limit — for his undercard bout against Jafel Filho (126). Similar to Barber, Nascimento forfeited 20 percent of his purse as penalty for the miss. The final penalty was given to longtime contender Ketlen Vieira, whose main-card bantamweight bout with Macy Chiasson was moved to featherweight as a result of Vieira's weight management issues, per the UFC. Vieira received the largest fine of the day, 25 percent of her purse, due to the switch. Advertisement Lastly, injury forced Trevin Giles to withdraw from his 180-pound catchweight bout against Andreas Gustafsson, leaving UFC Vegas 107 as a 10-fight card.
