Dortmund beats Mamelodi Sundowns 4-3 in blistering hot Club World Cup group stage match
CINCINNATI -- Borussia Dortmund was gifted an easy goal at the beginning of the match and held off a late response from the Mamelodi Sundowns on a fiercely warm day to win 4-3 in the Club World Cup group stage on Saturday. Bellingham scores first Dortmund goal as Reyna sits again
As Gio Reyna failed to see the field again for Borussia Dortmund, Jobe Bellingham scored his first goal for the club in their narrow 4-3 win against Mamelodi Sundowns FC on Saturday at the FIFA Club World Cup. Bellingham, who arrived this summer from recently promoted Sunderland, was able to notch the third goal for the Black and Yellow in their matchup against the South African side. "The goal is a nice bonus," the 19-year-old told DAZN after being named man of the match. "I'm happy that we won, but there are still many things to improve, both for me personally and for the team." Bellingham gave Dortmund a 3-1 lead in the first half when he chested down a clearance from the goalkeeper and hit a volley that went in via a slight deflection. "I practice that so many times, not that exact finish, but arriving late on the edge of the box as a midfielder is something you need to be really good at," Bellingham added. With a $43 million price tag, Dortmund is hoping that Jobe is able to have similar success as his older brother Jude, who played a pivotal part for the side from 2020 to 2023. While Dortmund was able to secure its first win of the Club World Cup, Reyna was an unused substitute again for the German giants. This comes after missing their previous match at the tournament, which would have been a homecoming for the 22-year-old. The U.S. international only featured in 25 matches for Dortmund last season. And with players such as Tajon Buchanan opting to represent their country over their club team for more playing time, questions remain if Reyna should or could have done the same.
