Two foreign students plead not guilty to staged kidnapping for RM2.9mil ransom
KUALA LUMPUR: Two students from a Singapore university pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court on Tuesday (May 13) to staging a fake kidnapping to trick one of their mothers into paying a RM2.9mil ransom.
Zhang Runbao, 23, and Ye Yingxi, 18, both Chinese nationals, were jointly charged with attempting to deceive Ye's mother, Cheng Zhiwen, by making a phone call and sharing a video purporting to show Ye being abducted.
In the video, Ye appeared half-naked, with his hands tied, mouth sealed with black duct tape, neck being strangled, body stepped on, and his face splashed with water.
They are alleged to have demanded a ransom of five million Yuan (approximately RM2.9mil) be transferred into a bank account in China. The acts were allegedly staged to dishonestly induce Cheng to remit the money.
The offence was allegedly committed at a hotel on Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman here, between 11.44am and 9.15pm on May 2.
The charge was framed under Section 420 of the Penal Code, read together with Sections 511 and 34, which provides a jail term of up to 10 years, whipping and a fine upon conviction.
Both men also pleaded not guilty to an alternative charge for the same offence under Section 417 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 34, which carries a jail term of up to five years, or a fine, or both.
Judge Azrul Darus set May 27 for case mention and granted each accused bail of RM30,000 with two sureties. The court also ordered both to surrender their passports until the disposal of the case.
Deputy public prosecutor Noor Syafina Radzuan appeared for the prosecution, while the two accused were represented by lawyers Ernie Sulastri Ahmad and Ramesh Sivakumar. – Bernama

Cops probe video showing alleged bullying of schoolgirl

(Envato Elements pic) PETALING JAYA : Police have launched an investigation into a bullying incident involving female students that allegedly took place in the restroom of a secondary school in Klang, after a video of the incident went viral on Facebook. Klang Utara police chief S Vijaya Rao said a report on the incident was made just before 1pm today. 'The cause of the incident is still under investigation,' he said in a statement. A video lasting about two minutes went viral on social media, showing a student surrounded by a group of female students who hit and slapped her. The case is being investigated under Section 323 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt, which carries a maximum penalty of one year in jail, a fine of up to RM2,000, or both, upon conviction. Vijaya urged those with information to contact investigating officer Izroy Kamarulzaman at 014-818 3519 to assist with the investigation.

Zhenhao Zou, 28, who lived in south London, used online platforms and dating apps to meet women, inviting them to his home under the pretext of having drinks or studying before he drugged them. He then filmed himself raping and sexually assaulting the women while they were unconscious, keeping some of their jewellery and clothing afterwards. Zou was found guilty in March of 28 offences, including 11 counts of rape, after a trial at Inner London Crown Court. At Thursday's sentencing he was jailed for life, with a minimum term of 24 years, minus time he had already spent in custody. Judge Rosina Cottage said Zou was "a highly manipulative and intelligent young man who gave no thought at all of the wishes and feelings of the women" he attacked. Detective Inspector Richard MacKenzie from London's Metropolitan Police said outside court: "The sheer scale of his offending, which spanned two countries, makes him one of the most prolific predators we have ever seen." The police previously said detectives believe there may be more than 50 other women who may have been victims of Zou and have not yet been identified. Originally from Dongguan in Guangdong Province, the student is thought to have moved to the United Kingdom in 2017 and began studying for a PhD at University College London in 2019.
