Korean arrivals to Sarawak up 20 pct, as STB strengthens North East Asia push

Visitors engage with STB delegates at the STB booth during the SITF 2025 held in South Korea.
KUCHING (June 14): A total of 12,972 Korean tourists visited Sarawak in 2023, marking a 20 per cent increase compared to pre-pandemic levels in 2019, according to the Sarawak Tourism Board (STB).
The board attributed the steady growth to its sustained marketing campaigns and digital outreach targeting the Korean market.
'The momentum was further strengthened by Post-Event Product Updates held in Seoul and, for the first time, Busan from June 9 to 10.
'The Busan session marked a historic first outreach in South Korea's second-largest city, reinforcing our commitment to expanding beyond capital-centric tourism promotion,' said STB in a statement issued in conjunction with the Seoul International Travel Fair (SITF) 2025, held June 5-8, where the board accelerated its presence in North East Asia markets.
According to STB, this marks a significant milestone in its wider regional strategy, to strengthen its footprint across strategic market clusters particularly within the broader North East Asia region.
The ongoing efforts in South Korea also reflect STB's growing momentum ahead of its participation at the World Expo 2025 in Osaka, Kansai — a global platform to further elevate Sarawak's presence in the North East Asia market and beyond, said the board.
SITF 2025 marked Sarawak's third consecutive participation at South Korea's largest tourism exhibition, which also celebrated its 40th anniversary.
STB strengthens ties with Korean travel trade partners at B2B sessions in Seoul and Busan, promoting Sarawak as the 'Gateway to Borneo.'
'Sarawak's colourful showcase featured cultural performances and interactive experiences that brought the state's Culture, Adventure, Nature, Food and Festivals (CANFF) pillars to life,' said STB.
The Product Updates attracted top-tier outbound travel agents, providing firsthand insights into Sarawak's latest offerings through presentations, destination briefings and curated networking sessions.
Sarawak's delegation featured tourism players including Innosar Holiday, Grand Margherita Hotel & Riverside Majestic Hotels, and the Sarawak Golf Tourism Association, each presenting fresh travel packages tailored for Korean travellers.
To amplify awareness, STB launched Korean-language Facebook and Instagram pages and collaborated with local influencers to extend digital reach.
The Sarawak Pavilion at SITF buzzed with traditional dance, interactive displays and live booth content, drawing thousands of Korean visitors over the four-day fair.
Beyond South Korea, STB is also ramping up preparations for its participation in the World Expo 2025 in Osaka, Kansai, aligning with Malaysia's national branding and positioning Sarawak gastronomy.
'This initiative marks a key expansion of STB's focus into North East Asia, with Japan identified as a high-value market for long-haul travellers seeking authentic experiences in Southeast Asia,' said STB.
With Visit Malaysia Year 2026 on the horizon, STB's integrated approach aims to solidify Sarawak's reputation as the Gateway to Borneo and a must-visit destination in Asia, added the statement. Korean lead marketing Sarawak Tourism Board tourists

AmBank marks 50th anniversary by sponsoring RWMF for first time

Shazman says the RWMF sponsorship reflects AmBank's long-standing relationship with Sarawak. SANTUBONG (June 20): AmBank Group is marking its golden jubilee by becoming the official bank for the Rainforest World Music Festival (RWMF) 2025. The bank group's corporate communications and marketing head Shazman Shahid said the bank was proud to be supporting one of Sarawak's most prominent cultural events. 'AmBank is the official bank for this festival this year. We are thankful to the Sarawak Tourism Board (STB), and the Sarawak government as well. 'This is our first time sponsoring an event of this nature, especially in Sarawak. It's a meaningful milestone for us as we celebrate our 50th anniversary, our golden jubilee,' he said in an interview with The Borneo Post today. According to Shazman, the sponsorship reflects AmBank's commitment to the people, particularly in Sarawak. 'As a bank for the people, and with our tagline 'Your Bank, Malaysia's Bank, AmBank', we are always there for the community, especially the people of Sarawak. 'This initiative also aligns with the bank's long-standing relationship with the state. 'For decades, we have been supporting the people, and the Sarawak government, by extending our financial services and facilities.' On AmBank's presence at this year's RWMF, Shazman said the bank had already set up a booth at the venue, Sarawak Cultural Village (SCV), to provide visitors with an 'immersive AmBank experience'. 'Throughout the three days, the visitors will be able to look forward to exclusive engagements, promotions and activities to bring our brand closer to the people. 'Among these, we'll be powering onsite with our payment solutions and also offering generous discounts to our credit card customers. 'So wherever they are within the nation, they will be able to use our credit card to come over and to spend during the festival,' he said. Shazman also highlighted the alignment between AmBank's community focus and the 2025 RWMF theme, 'Connections: One Earth, One Love'. 'Our real focus is on connection. 'We want to connect with the local community, with visitors across the globe, and with many talented artists who are converging on Santubong.' On the festival's progress over the years, Shazman said AmBank had been observing the development closely before coming on board as a sponsor. 'Of course, before we started our journey to sponsor, we had studied throughout the year. 'It (RWMF) has evolved, and more and more visitors are coming over to Santubong to celebrate the festival for three days. 'The evolution of the RWMF is just amazing, seeing it grow year by year. 'Hopefully for next year, we would be able to work together with the festival organisers as well.' The RWMF, now in its 28th edition, continues to draw thousands of music lovers from around the globe to Sarawak for three days of cultural and musical exchanges. AmBank Kuching official bank rwmf

Oil prices spike on Iran-Israel tensions, but sustained rally unlikely: TA

THE escalating confrontation between Iran and Israel has reintroduced volatility to global oil markets. Brent crude surged over 8% following Israel's targeted strikes on Iran's nuclear and military infrastructure. While initial reactions have been strong, TA Securities (TA) believe oil prices could stabilise unless critical assets, such as the Strait of Hormuz, face direct threats. 'We view the geopolitical premium as transient rather than transformative. The sector's risk-reward profile remains balanced, justifying a Neutral call,' said TA. TA reiterates their preference for oil and gas players with strong export linkages and robust cash generation, such as PANTECH and MISC. The global oil supply backdrop remains relatively resilient despite the geopolitical turmoil. OPEC+, led by Saudi Arabia, holds sufficient spare production capacity to offset most short term disruptions from Iran. According to EIA, global spare production capacity stood at approximately 4.55mn barrels per day (bpd) as of May 2025—primarily held by Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Iraq. This aligns with widely cited estimates suggesting that Saudi Arabia alone contributes about 3 mil bpd, while the UAE and Iraq collectively account for an additional 1–1.5 mil bpd. This spare capacity, defined as oil that can be brought online within 30 days and sustained for at least 90 days, serves as a vital buffer in stabilising markets should Iranian exports (currently ~2 mil bpd) be curtailed. In parallel, US shale producers continue to deliver robust output levels. Despite a decline in rig counts, production has held steady at 13.4 mil bpd, underscoring the productivity gains from technological efficiency and capital discipline. Other non-OPEC contributors like Brazil, Canada, and Guyana are also ramping up supply, contributing to a broader narrative of a well-supplied global market. As such, while the war may add volatility, the probability of a sustained supply shock remains relatively low unless additional producers or infrastructure become targets. Even amid heightened geopolitical risks, the global demand outlook for oil remains underwhelming. Structural headwinds, including muted industrial activity in Europe, China's tepid post-COVID recovery, and persistent inflationary pressures across major economies, are weighing on overall energy consumption. Airlines, a key post-pandemic recovery driver for jet fuel, are also seeing mixed signals. Ticket bookings are strong but jet fuel efficiency gains continue to limit actual oil consumption growth. Furthermore, the stronger-for-longer interest rate narrative in Western economies has delayed business investment and capped industrial output, particularly in energy-intensive sectors such as manufacturing, construction, and transport. Overall, while supply-side fears can generate temporary price rallies, the demand picture remains insufficiently supportive for a sustained oil bull cycle without further macroeconomic improvement. 'We retain our Neutral view on the Oil & Gas sector, as we believe the risk-reward balance remains evenly poised,' said TA. While geopolitical tensions could intermittently support prices, the presence of ample global spare capacity, resilient non-OPEC supply, and muted demand growth limit the probability of a sustained price rally. In this environment, TA favour stock-specific opportunities over a broad sector call.—June 20 2025 Main image: Metro Holding

SME confidence persists despite softening outlook

SME Bank acting group president/chief executive officer Datuk Mohammad Hardee Ibrahim. KUALA LUMPUR: Small Medium Enterprise Development Bank Malaysia Bhd's (SME Bank) sentiment index for micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) in the first half of 2025 signals continued confidence despite a moderating outlook. In a statement yesterday, SME Bank said its SME Sentiment Index registered a solid 55.2, reflecting continued optimism among entrepreneurs nationwide, even as they anticipate economic and financial challenges from US tariffs. 'This marks a slight moderation from 55.8 in the previous half. The index remains well above the neutral 50 level, indicating steady confidence despite a softening from the strong post-Covid rebound seen in earlier surveys,' it said. The SME Sentiment Index survey, conducted between January and April 2025, reached a record 2,007 respondents from 39 sectors across all business sizes. Acting group president and chief executive officer Datuk Mohammad Hardee Ibrahim noted more cautious optimism among entrepreneurs, citing softer expectations around sales, expansion and hiring. 'Although short-term sentiment has softened, Malaysia remains on a steady growth path supported by structural reforms, high-quality investments, and a focus on resilience and shared prosperity,' he said. Meanwhile, SME Bank chief economist Lynette Lee Li Qing said the index serves as a timely barometer of entrepreneurial sentiment, suggesting Malaysia's overall economy will continue to expand in 2025, albeit at a modest pace. 'The World Bank recently revised Malaysia's gross domestic product growth forecast down to 3.9%, alongside a cut in global growth due to heightened uncertainties arising from trade tension.' — Bernama
