AmBank marks 50th anniversary by sponsoring RWMF for first time
Shazman says the RWMF sponsorship reflects AmBank's long-standing relationship with Sarawak.
SANTUBONG (June 20): AmBank Group is marking its golden jubilee by becoming the official bank for the Rainforest World Music Festival (RWMF) 2025.
The bank group's corporate communications and marketing head Shazman Shahid said the bank was proud to be supporting one of Sarawak's most prominent cultural events.
'AmBank is the official bank for this festival this year. We are thankful to the Sarawak Tourism Board (STB), and the Sarawak government as well.
'This is our first time sponsoring an event of this nature, especially in Sarawak. It's a meaningful milestone for us as we celebrate our 50th anniversary, our golden jubilee,' he said in an interview with The Borneo Post today.
According to Shazman, the sponsorship reflects AmBank's commitment to the people, particularly in Sarawak.
'As a bank for the people, and with our tagline 'Your Bank, Malaysia's Bank, AmBank', we are always there for the community, especially the people of Sarawak.
'This initiative also aligns with the bank's long-standing relationship with the state.
'For decades, we have been supporting the people, and the Sarawak government, by extending our financial services and facilities.'
On AmBank's presence at this year's RWMF, Shazman said the bank had already set up a booth at the venue, Sarawak Cultural Village (SCV), to provide visitors with an 'immersive AmBank experience'.
'Throughout the three days, the visitors will be able to look forward to exclusive engagements, promotions and activities to bring our brand closer to the people.
'Among these, we'll be powering onsite with our payment solutions and also offering generous discounts to our credit card customers.
'So wherever they are within the nation, they will be able to use our credit card to come over and to spend during the festival,' he said.
Shazman also highlighted the alignment between AmBank's community focus and the 2025 RWMF theme, 'Connections: One Earth, One Love'.
'Our real focus is on connection.
'We want to connect with the local community, with visitors across the globe, and with many talented artists who are converging on Santubong.'
On the festival's progress over the years, Shazman said AmBank had been observing the development closely before coming on board as a sponsor.
'Of course, before we started our journey to sponsor, we had studied throughout the year.
'It (RWMF) has evolved, and more and more visitors are coming over to Santubong to celebrate the festival for three days.
'The evolution of the RWMF is just amazing, seeing it grow year by year.
'Hopefully for next year, we would be able to work together with the festival organisers as well.'
The RWMF, now in its 28th edition, continues to draw thousands of music lovers from around the globe to Sarawak for three days of cultural and musical exchanges. AmBank Kuching official bank rwmf

Jakarta has greenlighted resumption of Pontianak-Kuching flights, says Sarawak minister
KUCHING: Sarawak Tourism, Creative Industries and Performing Arts Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Hamzah said the Indonesian president had given the clearance to resume flights between the suspended Pontianak-Kuching route. The route was suspended in the middle of March 2020 due to travel restrictions brought about by the Covid‑19 pandemic. Despite being a temporary move, flights on the route remained stayed suspended even after travel restrictions were lifted as countries adapted to the pandemic. "They're opening up their skies," Karim told journalists covering the Rainforest World Music Festival at the Sarawak Cultural Village in Santubong. "We've been asking and asking… restart the Pontianak-Kuching flights. But clearance was not given. "And recently, I was made to understand that they are opening up their skies," he added. The minister said it's now up to the airlines to start operating the route again. Karim said the route had much potential and it could be as profitable as the Kuching-Jakarta route. "The flight frequency from Kuching-Jakarta used to be once a day. Now, it's already twice a day. The (passenger) load is high either way. So, there's big potential there." The route, he said, therefore does not benefit Sarawak only, but It will also benefit people in Pontianak. "Instead of driving four to five hours (from Kuching ) to Pontianak, they might as well just fly half an hour. That will definitely benefit the tourism industry in Pontianak."

Hawaiian trio Kulaiwi reconnect with 'separated' legacy through music
KUCHING: Hawaiian trio Kulaiwi are activists who see their music as a way of remembering and recording information for the future generation of native Hawaiians. The award-winning trio, comprising Lehua Kalima Alvarez, Shawn Kekoa Pimenta and Pono Fernandez, had been described by a music critic as "blending song and storytelling with hula to honour Hawaiian culture and ancestry". Pimenta said their songs and hula dances aimed to reconnect native Hawaiians to the aina (land). "The way for us to reconnect is through music and hula," Pimenta said in the artistes' interview on the second day of the Rainforest World Music Festival (RWMF) in Santubong near here. Kulaiwi is another group making their debut in this 28-year-old festival. The group's name literally means "the land where our ancestors' bones are buried". Pimenta said by making the reconnection, native Hawaiians "can go back to our ancient chants, the music of our ancient people to rediscover what it means to be connected to aina, or land". He said native Hawaiians had been separated from their culture for so long, and so music and dance were a very important way for them to not just learn by reading, but to experience as well. Pimenta, from Kaneohe on the windward side of Oahu island, said Pono, Lehua and him took great pride and care of everything that their ancestors had left for them. "And we strive to continue that legacy of our language, our culture through our songs and through our hula. "We wouldn't be able to have those deep connections if it weren't for music and dance." Pono summed it as a way of remembering, a way of connecting to the past and a way for them to be a bridge to the future. "So the songs that we write, the hulas that we dance today that our peers have created will carry on so the future generations will understand the links." Pono, like Pimenta, is also from Oahu while Lehua is from Hilo. Kulaiwi released their album Native Lands in 2022, featuring 15 tracks comprising original and classic songs. At the 45th annual Hawaii Academy of Recording Arts in 2022, they swept the Group of the Year, Album of the Year, Hawaiian Music Album of the Year and Hawaiian Engineering of the Year awards.

Pontianak-Kuching direct flights may resume soon, says Abdul Karim

Sarawak Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, confirmed the development during a press conference today, saying Indonesia has now agreed to open up its skies for the Pontianak-Kuching sector. 'I'm very happy. It has been announced on that side that they are opening up their skies from Pontianak. 'You see, Indonesia, they have got their own way. The decree must come from the President. I'm not putting the blame on the previous President because we've been asking and asking, please start again the Pontianak-Kuching flight. But it was not given. 'And recently, I was made to understand that they are opening up their skies. So, it's up to the airlines to start operating again. So, probably there are a few that might be looking into it now because I know that sector is a very good sector. It does not benefit Sarawak only. It does not benefit Malaysia only. It also benefits the other side,' he said. Abdul Karim noted that reinstating the route would offer a major convenience for Sarawakians. 'A lot of Sarawakians now, instead of driving four, five hours to Pontianak, they might as well just fly half an hour. And that will definitely benefit the industry, the tourism industry in Pontianak,' he said. When asked whether the Sarawak government would encourage low-cost carriers like AirAsia to take up the route, Abdul Karim confirmed that discussions are ongoing. 'Of course, we will be. Not just AirAsia. Even airlines from Indonesia. Indonesia has got lots of budget airlines. If they are willing to participate in that, of course, we are very, very happy,' he said. He also highlighted growing demand along the Sarawak–Indonesia air corridor. 'You can see now that the flight from Kuching to Jakarta used to be once a day. Now, it's already twice a day. And the loading is very high. Either way. So, there's big potential there,' he said.
