The world's biggest queer culture museum is in Australia — and it shines during Pride Month

Time Out03-06-2025

It's here, it's queer… it's Pride Month! And there's no better place to celebrate than at Qtopia Sydney – the world's largest centre for LGBTQIA+ history and culture, right here in Australia. This colourful museum and cultural hub in the heart of Sydney's Rainbow Precinct dazzles in June with more than 150 events spotlighting the nation's top queer artists.
Down here in Australia, our Pride celebrations generally take place earlier in the year when the weather is warmer, with the world-famous Sydney Mardi Gras Parade taking over Oxford Street in late February or early March. However, with growing awareness around International Pride Month happening in June, Qtopia's Pride Fest is spreading the love and creating more opportunities for connection and community (which is especially important when LGBTQIA+ rights are under threat globally). And the sparkle isn't just seasonal – it shines year-round as a proud beacon of identity, creativity and inclusion for Australia's LGBTQIA+ community.
Despite only opening recently in February 2024, Qtopia Sydney has been a long time in the making. It was born from the vision of the late Professor David Cooper, a pioneering HIV/AIDS researcher who dreamed of building a space to honour those impacted by the disease. His dream was brought to life by David Polson AM, one of the first Australians to be diagnosed with HIV, who participated in 28 drug trials under Professor Cooper's care, helping pave the way for the life-saving medications we have today. Although Polson sadly passed away earlier this year, his legacy – and the legacy of those who stood loud and proud before him – lives on at Qtopia.
At Qtopia, LGBTQIA+ stories aren't just recorded, but are vibrantly told and celebrated. The cultural centre hosts up to 17 thought-provoking exhibitions at any one time – all guided by five major themes: Human Rights, Sexuality and Identity, Media Representation, First Nations stories, and the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Throughout the year, Qtopia also comes alive with a dazzling program of theatre, cabaret, visual art, music, comedy, drag, literature events and burlesque shows.
Qtopia's Artistic and Programs Director Carly Fisher describes it as "a place where stories come to life and where we strive to amplify voices that deserve to be heard. Pride Fest is one of our most powerful expressions of that mission. In just one year, it's grown by more than 180 per cent, with over 150 events and 400 artists taking part. We've built a festival that elevates bold voices, showcases emerging talent and invites audiences into a space that's vibrant, inclusive and unapologetically proud."
Headlining this year's Sydney Pride Fest are three of the most awarded Queer acts on the Fringe circuit, including A Friend of Dorothy: Anthems of Pride, Skank Sinatra and The Platonic Human Centipede.
Headliner artist Jens Radda (Skank Sinatra) reflects: 'Pride Fest is a fabulous reminder that while we revel in joy and glitter now, the fight for equality is ongoing and spaces like Qtopia Sydney help keep that fire alive with every show, story and sequin. I'm proud to be headlining Pride Fest and even prouder to be part of the Qtopia family, a place that honours our past while lighting the way forward.'
Beyond the glitter of Pride Fest, Qtopia's doors – and arms – are open year-round. We asked some local people who identify as LGBTQIA+ what the space means to them, and here's what they had to say:
Steve Spencer, LGBTQIA+ advocate and Qtopia Sydney ambassador, says: "As a proud bi man, it took me years to find my voice – but places like Qtopia Sydney give us all a place to find our voice and make a difference. It is here, where we come together to activate and celebrate, where I am reminded just how vital and joyful our stories are. Having a Queer home in the heart of the city where we connect, learn and celebrate together is life-changing for so many people."
Rebbell Barnes, activist, Qtopia Sydney ambassador and the youngest person to participate in the first Mardi Gras protest in 1978, says: "As the youngest 78er and a proud ambassador for Qtopia Sydney, I'm thrilled to celebrate Sydney's vibrant Pride Month and the incredible space Qtopia Sydney has created in the heart of Taylor Square. It's a welcoming hub where artists and the community are coming together to host over 150 diverse events this Pride Month. Qtopia Sydney's mission to educate, honour our history and share stories ensures our community's rich history is celebrated and preserved. Given the global attack on gay and trans rights, it is more important than ever to stand proud and stand together. Here's to a month of pride, remembrance and unity!"

JoJo Siwa abruptly cancels gay pride gig over 'pressure' to brand her sexuality

JoJo Siwa will no longer be taking part in a Pride event in Chicago next weekend - with the news being announced a day after she candidly opened up about her sexuality journey JoJo Siwa has abruptly pulled out of a gay pride performance just hours after revealing she felt "pressured" to brand herself a lesbian. The 22-year-old American singer has been on a high profile romantic journey since April this year when she met Love Island star Chris Hughes in the UK Celebrity Big Brother house. Viewers watched on in surprise as the pair grew closer and closer over the course of their time in the house. Eyebrows were raised as JoJo was dating an Australian content creator called Kath Ebbs at the time. ‌ Once the show ended, Kath was almost immediately dumped by the Dance Moms star and days later it was revealed she and 32-year-old Chris had embarked on a romance. This week, JoJo, who identifies as queer, explained that she had been pressured to declare herself a lesbian. ‌ And in the wake of this declaration, it has been revealed she has dropped out at performing at an LGBTQ+ event later this month. She had been due to perform at the Back Lot Bash in Chicago as part of their Chicago Pride Sunday party on June 29. But the organization suddenly announced on Saturday morning that this would no longer be the case. The venue wrote on social media: "Due to a scheduling conflict, JoJo Siwa will no longer be performing at Chicago's Back Lot Bash" - without and further explanation. The Mirror has contacted a representative of JoJo for comment. The abrupt cancellation follows news that the star had cancelled a planned tour. She revealed via her official website earlier this month: "I've got some news that breaks my heart to share... my US tour has to be postponed. I promise I'll be back before you know it to perform for all the beautiful people in the US!... Announcements will be coming soon, including some Europe shows!:)" It added: "Thank you so much for your understanding and support. I can't wait to see you all soon! To my Dream Guest VIPs, my team will be reaching out to you individually to plan something special. Refunds will be issued at point of purchase." ‌ Her Chicago Pride cancellation comes a day after she gave a candid interview to the Daily Mail in which she opened up about her sexuality journey. She told the publication: "When I came out at 17, I said: 'I'm pansexual, because I don't care [about gender].' But then I kind of boxed myself in and I said: 'I'm a lesbian.' And I think I did that because of pressure." She continued: "'In a weird way, I think [the pressure] came a little bit from inside the [LGBTQ] community at times. From people I know, from partners I've had. ‌ "You just get put in this world where you feel like, because you now have said, 'Oh, I'm a lesbian', you have to be a lesbian. And the truth is, sexuality is fluid." In a recent chat with TMZ, JoJo also addressed the ongoing scrutiny that she's been subjected to as fans have dissected her love life. She told the outlet: "The thing is, love is a beautiful rainbow and I think that the LGBTQIA+ community needs to remember that love is love and think the hate from within the community is something I've learned a lot from and I think that a lot of people get to grow from and I'm on of those people. ‌ "I think that again I can give you an example of love is love, you can be happy..." Fans could soon see a lot more of JoJo and Chris and their apparent blossoming love - as rumours abound that ITV is preparing to offer them a reality show of their own. A source told The Sun: "It's still in the early stages but ITV really think they'd be amazing TV with their own show. Fans around the world are obsessed with their relationship and there are so many TikTok accounts devoted to their love story."

JoJo Siwa makes shocking career move just one day after revealing she was 'pressured' to call herself a lesbian

JoJo Siwa cancelled her performance at Saturday's Pride celebration in Chicago. Back Lot Bash Chicago, the organization putting on the event, made the announcement early Saturday morning with a quick note in its Instagram Stories. 'Due to a scheduling conflict, JoJo Siwa will no longer be performing at Chicago's Back Lot Bash,' it read, without further explanation. The news comes one day after the Bulletproof singer, 22, who defines herself as queer, revealed to the Daily Mail that she felt pressured into calling herself a lesbian. 'When I came out at 17, I said: 'I'm pansexual, because I don't care [about gender]." But then I kind of boxed myself in and I said: 'I'm a lesbian.' And I think I did that because of pressure.' The Dance Moms alum has had several relationships with women since coming out in February 2021. 'In a weird way, I think [the pressure] came a little bit from inside the [LGBTQ] community at times. From people I know, from partners I've had,' she contended. 'You just get put in this world where you feel like, because you now have said, 'Oh, I'm a lesbian', you have to be a lesbian. And the truth is, sexuality is fluid.' Siwa met her current love interest, Chris Hughes, 32, while they were both competing on Celebrity Big Brother UK. The TV presenter defended Siwa after fellow contestant Mickey Rourke, 72, made homophobic comments. The two became friends, and then 'platonic soulmates' and then it developed into something more with the couple going public with their romance earlier this month. 'I'll just say that it took time. It took time away and then it took time together.' She now calls Hughes 'the favourite part of my life.' For those who think the liaison is just for PR, they couldn't be more wrong, the Guilty Pleasure singer told The Guardian. The cancellation came one day after Siwa revealed in an interview with Daily Mail that she felt pressured into identifying as a lesbian, even though she had originally come out as pansexual; Pictured in London on June 2 Siwa postponed the US leg of her tour earlier this month, hinting that more European dates might be added instead. The news comes amid the news Columbia Records had dropped her; Pictured in London in June 2024 'Clearly, you've never been around us. I won't ever speak for him, but for me personally, the happiness in my life just radiates off of me right now,' she told the outlet. 'Literally yesterday, I was massaging my cheeks; I've never [before] been in pain from smiling so much.' The Karma artist was set to return to the US next week for the American leg of her tour, but an announcement made on the website said the dates have been postponed, with those who bought tickets would receive a refund. She also teased that there would be more shows in Europe announced soon in a hint that she could be staying in the UK for longer. It comes just days after it was revealed JoJo has been dropped by record label Columbia just one year after being signed.
