Valentín Barco a key piece in Strasbourg's success
RC Strasbourg Alsace have been one of the best Ligue 1 sides this year and a Premier League loanee is a big reason why.
Just before the winter transfer window closed, the Alsace club signed Valentín Barco (20) on loan from Brighton and Hove Albion for the remainder of the season. His versatility as a wingback has taken Strasbourg to another level in 2025.

The Argentine has been a handful for opposing defences with his darting runs down the flank, winning 24 fouls for them in the league since his arrival.
Barco has been exceptional for this team as Le Racing have never lost a league contest with him in the starting XI.
He's won over 60% of his duels with a pass accuracy of over 80% (84.4), while collecting two assists. His skill with the ball and exquisite passing have made him a vital asset to Liam Rosenior's setup this year.
Strasbourg are undefeated at home in the French top-flight this year, netting multiple goals in all but one of their league fixtures at Stade de la Meinau in 2025.

With 54 points after 31 league fixtures, Le Racing have their highest tally to this stage of a top-flight campaign in the last 40 years, and Barco has been a big reason they've piled up the points over the past few months.
Heading into their matchup with Paris Saint-Germain on Saturday, Strasbourg are just below OGC Nice on goal difference for a place in Europe next season.
Meanwhile, only two points currently separate them from a place in the top three, which comes with an automatic berth in the UEFA Champions League group phase next season.

Enzo Maresca says Nicolas Jackson red cards will not impact his Chelsea future
Enzo Maresca insisted that Nicolas Jackson's indiscipline is not putting his Chelsea future at risk after the striker received his second straight red card in his last four appearances for the club in a 3-1 defeat against Flamengo in the FIFA Club World Cup. Jackson was dismissed by referee Ivan Arcides Barton Cisneros in the 68th minute at Lincoln Financial Field — only four minutes after coming off the substitutes bench to replace £30million signing Liam Delap — after raising his studs to the ankle of Flamengo defender Ayrton Lucas. Jackson — who issued an apology on social media shortly after full time — will now miss Chelsea's final group match against Esperance de Tunis on Tuesday, but FIFA have the power to review and increase his suspension if they deem a one-match ban insufficient. He will also sit out the first match of the new Premier League season against Crystal Palace on August 17 as he serves the final match of his ban for the red card he was shown against Newcastle United in May after he caught Sven Botman with his elbow. Asked if Jackson's red cards are putting his Chelsea career at risk with Delap now poised to get a sustained run as the team's first-choice striker, Maresca replied: 'No, the red card has nothing to do with Nico's future. He had the first one against Newcastle when Liam was not even here and another one (against Flamengo). 'I'm not sure that it's 100 per cent a red card but the referee decided for that, and Nico knows very well that in both situations (it) was not something good for the team.' Speaking to reporters in the mixed zone, Marc Cucurella revealed that Jackson apologised to his Chelsea teammates in the dressing room after the match. 'He's very sad,' he said of Jackson. 'He tried to win the ball, had the bad luck that he kicked his leg and that's it. He's a young player with a lot of quality but maybe needs to improve a little bit in these things. He has to learn. After the manager spoke, he said sorry, he didn't do it on purpose. He's a very important player for us, we miss him the next game but this is football.' Jackson also apologised publicly with a statement on Instagram. 'Another red card… and honestly, I'm so angry at myself,' he wrote. 'I work hard every day to help the team not to put us in this kind of situation.I still don't fully understand how it happened. But one thing is clear: it wasn't intentional. Just a football moment that went the wrong way. No excuses. I take full responsibility.' I saw it in front of me, and for me it was a red. But it's just a small detail for a big player who can be one of the biggest strikers in the world.'

Canine cowabunga: Repeat surf dog champions crowned in Huntington Beach
Petey the Surf Dog caught a long wave early in the small dog finals of the Purina Pure Plan Incredible Dog Challenge Western Regional competition on Friday morning. The 6-year-old West Highland white terrier from Huntington Beach rode it all the way in toward the shore, earning plenty of points. Petey's trainer, Kay DeLoach, marveled at the ride after the competition. 'He seems to adjust his balance so he doesn't fall off,' DeLoach said. 'It's amazing to watch.' Petey proved up to the challenge yet again at Huntington State Beach. He won the small dog competition at the 28th annual event for the second straight year, topping a terrier mix from Long Beach named Carson in the championship heat. Koa, an 11-year-old female Labrador from Carlsbad, was also a repeat winner in the large dog competition at the event, held between Brookhurst Street and Lifeguard Tower 2. Koa edged Charlie, a yellow Labrador from El Cajon, in the final heat. Petey racked up the points even in low tide conditions, advancing to the final after a 10-minute preliminary heat. 'It was hard,' said DeLoach, who oversees Westie Rescue of Orange County. 'I was definitely nervous. Somebody asked me how do you feel when they take him out like that, and I said, 'panic.'' But he proved up to the challenge. DeLoach, who has lived in Surf City for about 25 years, said it was very exciting to repeat in a home competition. Koa's trainer, Kristina Welsh, raised her arms in victory after the final results of the large dog competition were announced. Koa was actually racing against her husband in the last heat — Welsh said that the trainers staged a wedding between Koa and Charlie last year. Derby, a retired surf dog also from the San Diego area, served as officiant. 'Hopefully Charlie doesn't divorce her,' said Welsh, smiling, after the competition. 'I'm honored, I really am. I really wanted this for her, because this is just something that she loves so much.' Welsh said that with Koa advancing in age, she wasn't sure if she would be back competing in Huntington Beach again next year. She gave a shout out to the knowledgeable lifeguards assisting with the competition, for helping Koa get on some really nice waves. 'Dogs have so much more than being a house dog, you know,' Welsh said. 'She has found her passion, and we can share that with people. People can see her athletic abilities, but also just the fact that she's like every other kid that wants to go out surfing. There's no difference. She wants to spend her day surfing just like a typical Southern California kid. It's the cutest thing in the world.' Dan Nykolayko from Newport Beach did not quite see his 2-year-old French bulldog Rocket advance to the small dog finals. Nykolayko formerly trained Cherie, another now-retired champion French bulldog. 'She's at home, mad,' said Nykolayko, smiling, sensing a bit of jealously. 'She's been barking at us.' The Purina Pro Plan Incredible Dog Challenge continues Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Huntington State Beach, between Beach Boulevard and Newland Street. Dogs will try their skills in agility, diving dog, freestyle flying disc, fetch it and weave competitions. The event is free and open to the public.
